  1. I have always thought that the academic pursuit of a question I wanted to prove for a specific historiological purpose and to reduce bias and misunderstandings about a certain institution. And Yes, I was accepted by an institution in Cambridge in April, have two wonderful supervisors ,have passed my first stage and selected to short-present my work at a Conference which was well receive. My professors have treated me as a friend and fellow researcher and are not threatened by my not caring about professorships.Being treated like this, and the encouragement have spurred me on to meet the deadlines, improve my Latin and ancient Welsh with regular lectures and I am more than holding my own. This is NOT a hobby for me , but a job and being respected as a voice says a lot for the university. I don't feel like an older person(nor look like one actually). All I needed was a chance to prove my theory and help my organisation. Thank you to all those who gave the advice to be courageous. It has inspired me to go for it and not allow others to keep me out.
  2. Thank you islandsatlantic. Trouble is, someone has to let you in, and we need supervision just like younger people.....Still trying. Improving my Latin at Blackfriars Oxford in the meantime.
  3. Thank you OHSP. If shall definitely follow up St Andrews to start with. Would love to study in US, but have a husband here and I always wonder whether funding is available for mature students.Scotland is a way away (I live in Cotswolds) but nowadays not so much of a problem because Skype etc. is very useful to cut down on visits. I thought I might try York. Dee Dyas whm I would like to work with has gone to Melbourne I think! Still thank you for the encouragement. Distance learning might be good. I live quite near Oxford, London is not too far and the Library of the University of Wales is ok, if I travel and stay overnight....
  4. I have just put together a proposal for a specialised topic, an interdisciplinary between philosophy (a subject where I have an MA from UCL/theology in which I have a diploma from the Maryvale Institute /history(where I have an MA from Bristol in Medieval History. concerning the spiritual Impact on the devout pilgrim of medieval pilgrimage in England and Wales- with reference to Aristotle Aquinas and others. I am looking at transformational emotions and conversion of soul required for penance. Perhaps it bores people, but I find it fascinating and it is a real project for me to trawl medieval pilgrim plays, Latin and English, welsh poetry and art etc but would welcome guidance in some areas which is why I am interested in an good supervisor.
  5. There are many aspects, sensual stimuli, olfactory, auditory tactile and visual and I would really like some guidance in some aspects.I would be doing something useful with what I have spent a lifetime learning.-even Latin and Welsh.
  7. Sorry Telkanuru, I have just put together a proposal for a specialised topic, an interdisciplinary between philosophy (a subject where I have an MA from UCL/theology in which I have a diploma from the Maryvale Institute /history(where I have an MA from Bristol in Medieval History. concerning the spiritual Impact on the devout pilgrim of medieval pilgrimage in England and Wales- with reference to Aristotle Aquinas and others. 8. Yes but I am in England and doing a specialised Humanities subject.

  10. Thank you for taking the trouble to write some advice. Very kind.
  11. Thank you Meraki. I can self fund and am not looking for funding and have started to reach out to a wider circle now. Your advice is really useful for me and encouraging that not everyone is biased and that there is some hope.Evie
  12. I am finding it hard to get accepted as an older person for a PhD. There are older people (I heard of one of 75 years last year who just achieved a PhD and wrote a valuable piece of scholarship.) If bias of older students were a provable, it would be illegal, but anything can be thought up not to accept you. Most of us older people were brought up to regard university as a place for knowledge, learning and research first and if you were younger perhaps a career. Not having chosen a career in academia, if you have the mind (and the money- you are not even taking from someone else) to study, there should be no barrier. I am 66 and last year got an MA from a prominent university. Am I now to be told- "go home and watch 'Loose Women' on the TV, granny?" I think bias against the older person is insulting. 60 is the new 40, people are living longer (and having to work and pay taxes longer to pay for others.) For heaven's sake, if we have a useful piece of work to do, why are we discriminated against? We do not regard it as a hobby. Sitting in the British Library or LLW or British Museum looking at documents, I have no use for my designated elderly activities.bingo, walks in the country, WI. Good research IS the job, ( as is conscienciously doing ones job throughout a lifetime and paying for the education of so many). It is a sorry thing to read from so many about this prejudice, because we have a passion for our subjects too. I am so sorry for your anger and frustration, but this has not been caused by older students. tOur useful research, is possibly enriched by the insights of many jobs we have done during our lives.
  13. I am in my sixties. I achieved an M A two years ago from a Russell Group University in Medieval History. I have quals in Manuscript work, Latin and old scripts and now have a very interesting subject to study. However, what happened to studying for a PhD because you have a really interesting topic and because you ant to follow it, you can manage the finance? I have an MA in Philosophy from UCL from some time ago.But I can't get anyone to supervise me. I am not awkward and also look ten years younger than I am. This is very soul destroying when there is no real reason except my age. Of course you can never prove it. They would just say they were not interested in your research or you are just not good enough. I don't necessarily want a tenured position or even a job-just investigating for sheer passion. I have a slight disablement and feel I am condemned to sit at home and watch 'Loose Women'.Only kidding" Can anyone suggest anything.
