So I received a letter from DGS for my department confirming admission, stipend, tuition and health insurance information. But I don't see any of the specifics of that information loaded into the application portal, and I haven't received anything else from the university regarding the funding package. I just wanted to confirm that this isn't cause for concern before I click accept.
All is not lost. It depends on whether you know what you want to work on for the dissertation. I applied to UChicago to work with Donner also. When I learned before applying that he would be retiring soon from multiple sources, I still applied because they're one of the few institutions in the country where I could take all of the courses I needed to equip me to work on the project I wanted to work on. Based on that I reframed my SOP towards working with other professors inside and outside the department who could at least advise on parts of a dissertation I would want to work on. There's a trend now among universities moving away from a single advisor who is your be all end all. An alternative would be to assemble a group of complimentary advisers who can get you to where you want to go.
I applied to UChicago NELC and Divinity, OSU NELC, Brandeis NEJS, UMD Hist., CUA Semitics, Yale Religion (EMWAR), Princeton NES, NYU ISAW, and Oxford MST Islamic Studies and History. My interests are Qur'anic Studies and the emergence of Islam in Late Antiquity.
Heard back first from OSU and got accepted! Still waiting on information about funding.
Just received an automated e-mail from GPA admissions tonight for admission for 2020 in OSU NELC, I am very excited! But the automated e-mail did not mention anything about funding, and when I logged onto the portal there was not funding information available there either. Did you receive a separate e-mail about funding, health insurance, etc?
Congratulations on your admissions! I applied to the Christian Near East program, Arabic will be my major language, I am hoping to pick up Syriac and Ge'ez as well. I take it you're interested in Coptic? ? Any secondary interests?
I only applied to CUA's Semitics MA/PhD program and I was admitted to the program. The decision was posted through the admissions' portal on Saturday Feb. 9th. I'm waiting to hear back about funding. Good luck to everyone!
