I'd just add that this isn't always that case! I received a prelim invitation email from a PI saying I'd made it to their shortlist of applicants to interview after narrowing down from their larger pool. So I think it depends on the pI:)

me - having micro heart attacks every day whenever I get a reminder to submit my app. Can't believe you've had interviews/rejections already, i haven't even submitted my apps yet!Congrats!

applying to 5 - to save costs and also make sure that im a decent fit wth them.

I see. I think I was confused because I heard UCSB only gives 5k in stipend and tuition is only guaranteed for the first year...so that means it's not a fully funded program?

I'm confused about stipends/TAships. When schools say they give you a 20k stipend, is that including the TAship or not? Can you apply for TAships above your stipend?
