  1. Thank you all for the wonderful advice. The situation I was in was largely due to the fact that the school had given a very early deadline to RSVP. After receiving information about the open house I was given 6 days to make a decision, and since they were reimbursing all travel costs, and at the time it was the only school I had been accepted to I thought why not. Since then I, very surprisingly, got into both of my top choices. You guys gave wonderful advice from both sides so I'm gonna sit on it for a few days but if I decide not to go, just reject the program entirely in order for other students to get a chance. I just wish they had given more time for students to RSVP!
  2. Just looking for some general advice. I RSVP's to a visitation but now have gotten into schools higher on my list so I am thinking about backing out just because I can only take off so many Fridays. Would this be seen as rude? Also any recommendations on how I should word the email.
  3. If you don't mind me asking I saw you were wait listed for Vanderbilt. When did you hear of this, were you emailed or was it on the portal?
  4. Has anyone received a formal rejection from Vanderbilt. Trying to determine if should still hold out hope. To help give data to future applicants (will update as I hear back from places; accepted, waitlisted, rejected) Programs (all PhD): Ohio State (Sociology)
  5. Thank you! Didn't know the red diamonds had that information
  6. I wanted to start a thread where those who got into SOC PhD programs could maybe list their GPAs, GREs, research experience , and other things they felt were relevant in their application. Following if they could say what schools they were accepted into or declined. The website for many of the schools offering SOC PHd programs don't list their avg GRE or GPA so I would like to see what numbers are getting accepted to get a better idea of my chances.
  7. I am a entering senior in undergrad who is planning on applying to a soc PhD for Fall 2020 but have been considering taking a gap year to strengthen my resume. I have a 3.8/4.0 gpa and 3.9/4.0 major gpa from a state university majoring is Sociology and Criminal Justice with a minor in Social Change, I have yet to take the GRE but based on practice tests estimate getting in the 70th percentile in Quant and a 85th percentile in Verbal. I have had 1.5 years of research experience as a research assistant under a professor who is helping me write a manuscript that I plan on using for my writing sample but will more than likely not be published by the time I apply. I also work as a undergraduate fellow for the University consortium for social justice research on another project for a year and a half. I plan on applying to top 30 programs with my research interests focusing on crime and family. I completed a virtual internship with the US dept and am now doing a summer internship in a state justice related cabinet. I have 4 strong letters of recommendations from professors I worked closely with. Should I wait and aim for a stronger GRE score and possibly a publication or would I be able to get into a Top 30 program with what I have right now? Any advice is welcome :)
