  1. Thank you all very much for your helpful advice!
  2. Hello all, I hope you are all staying well in this unusual time! I want to say thank you to all those who generously gave out advice on this forum -- I was a (somewhat) frequent visitor to this website when I applied to grad schools in the fall, and your words gave me much insight into how grad schools and their applications work. Much gratitude for your selfless sharing and help! I will be speaking with two potential advisors this coming week. I have two questions, and I wonder whether you would have some thoughts. 1) How should I approach the issue of my other choice(s), if it comes up at all? At this point, I am not 100% committed to any program. I don't feel extremely comfortable letting my potential advisors know where else I have gotten into (because I do not want to let people know the program whose offer I did not accept, once I make a commitment). If this issue comes up, I don't want to be insincere and say that I am already determined to attend their program; but I also worry that if I don't even tell them my situation, I would appear neither open nor genuine. How can I approach this in an honest and polite manner? 2) In general, what questions would be helpful to ask my potential advisors? Much information can be gleaned from the programs' websites, and I will also be talking with graduate students. What can I ask that would be a good use of my potential advisors' time? Thank you very much! I look forward to hearing what you think:)
  3. Don't worry -- rest well and be the best of who you are. The GRE is only one part (and the least important part) of the application. Be kind to yourself and do what's best for you -- both in the short-term application process and in your long-term life.
  4. That is very thoughtful. Thank you!
  5. Hi all! May I ask you another trivial question? At this stage of my application, I am starting to think about how I should format my statement and writing sample. In the document that you upload as your statement, do you put your name on the upper-left corner? I am thinking about naming my documents as "statement / writing sample, my name," is it alright? Thank you for your time. Sorry this is really not an interesting question -- just wanted to make sure that I am doing things right!
  6. Thank you very much! That's also how I felt -- the cv probably doesn't matter very much, just to provide some background information about myself:)
  7. Hello all! I just graduated college in May and am now applying to PhD programs for Fall 2020. I want to take a biographical approach to study people who traveled long distances in Asia before 1800 -- before nation-states and mass media shaped human understanding of the world and interactions with others. As I fill out my application forms, I get a little confused by the CV. What would admission committees want to see on a CV? Is it an important piece within the application? Since I do not have an MA yet, I don't have publication, conferences, etc. But I do have teaching experiences, awards, and research grants. I know I can just list what I have, but I wonder whether there is a way to *work on my CV* to make it clear, on-point, and appealing. Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you and very happy to meet you all!
