  1. "The power to guess the unseen from the seen, to trace the implication of things, to judge the whole piece by the pattern, the condition of feeling life, in general, so completely that you are well on your way to knowing any particular corner of it--this cluster of gifts may almost be said to constitute experience, and they occur in country and in town, and in the most differing stages of education. If experience consists of impressions, it may be said that impressions are experience, just as (have we not seen it?) they are the very air we breathe. Therefore, if I should certainly say to a novice, 'Write from experience, and experience only,' I should feel that this was a rather tantalising monition if I were not careful immediately to add, 'Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!' "

  2. I got the basic package as outlined above and a nomination for a special award, which should be announced shortly... I'm sad I had to drop this great program from the list, but I'm hopeful that one more person will get an acceptance. I wish I had more info. to offer, but that's pretty much it. Best of luck!

  3. Hi Timshel, I've been there and know exactly what it is to feel as if your POI has forgotten about you or is simply just not interested in your work. Nothing could be farther from the truth, I've learned. Just keep in mind that professors lead extremely busy lives, meeting publishing deadlines, advising students, attending conferences, etc. Anyway, one of my POIs (a very high-profile theorist) took about 3 weeks to contact me after the program sent me that initial heads-up, but the wait was totally worth it. I still get butterflies in my stomach thinking about it. Anyway, the point is, you'll get the call, and it'll be wonderful!

  4. Thanks, everyone! I'm simply over the moon. I was not expecting this at all--or most of my acceptances for this matter. I have a lot of thinking and soul-searching to do in the next several weeks. UPenn has made this decision all the more difficult for me, but what a happy problem it is to have.

After this is all over, I hope to share some insights I've gleaned through this application process with anyone thinking of applying next year. I've always considered myself an academic underdog in many ways, so I sincerely think that some of my experiences may give others hope.

Aeplo, my specialty is in the rise of corporate culture and immigrant fiction at the turn of the twentieth century. What's yours?

    Best of luck to everyone!
