  1. I'm not sure this correlates perfectly with the thread, but I find this Kahneman's quote very interesting: "Why do people use models? I liken what is happening now [he refers to the financial turmoil, but it could be Hitler] to a system that forecasts the weather, and does so very well. People know when to take an umbrella when they leave the house, or when it will snow. Except what? The system can't predict hurricanes. Do we use the system anyway, or throw it out? It turns out they'll use it."
  2. Did any of you go to Berkeley's visit days? I couldn't go, but I would very much like to know your impressions! Janet sent me the facebook and it would be nice to put faces to some people here. Please PM me!
  3. I still haven't heard from NYU. I don't know if there's anyone else in the same situation, but yesterday I emailed them to ask about my status and got this very, very informative reply: "The admissions process is ongoing and all applicants will be notified when it is complete." Maybe they just lost my file
  4. As convex said, the average background of econ students is higher, so even if the courses in both depts had the same syllabus, the econ course would be stronger. One way to start things out is to attend the "summer math camp" that almost all Econ depts have before their semester begins. If you can enroll (I will try to do that) it is probably a good way to boost any other method course performance, regardless of the dept.
  5. I would agree with you if I hadn't heard anything about the PSJR forum.
  6. I believe that not only they read it but they also know more or less who we are by our stats. Why? Somebody from somewhere I got in asked my adviser if I was going to place A or B. There was no way he could know about place B. Did anyone else felt paranoid for at least for a moment?
  7. I'm still waiting Columbia and NYU. And Princeton WWS. But I feel it is over already, since I've made my decision.
  8. Does anyone know who should I contact in NYU to ask about my status? I've sent an email to GSAS admission office two days ago and until now I haven't heard from them. I want closure! EDIT: I guess no one is really concerned, but I got this useless automated response: The Graduate School forwards your application to the department for consideration. The Graduate School does not provide the status of applications online, nor does it provide admissions decisions online, by email or by telephone. Applicants will be notified of all admission decisions by mail. The mailing of decisions varies by department. Most doctoral programs make their decisions in February and March. They arrange to have decisions mailed by mid- to late March. Master's and non-degree programs make their decisions at different times, beginning in late February. Alas! those rejections on the results page were received by email.
  9. Is there anyone else still waiting for NYU? Sounds like they've put me on that very special list: "Suckers we will only notify during overtime".
  10. I can speak for my experience as an international applicant, hope it helps. I had a low Verbal (530) and 800Q, but that did not stop me from being accepted in a top-5. However, I had a strong writing sample (according to one member of the adcom) and a good TOEFL (109). Not to mention the LORs, that I am sure helped. Perhaps, most importantly, my SOP describes someone very involved with quantitative methods. In retrospect, I should have put more effort to achieve a 650+ score on Verbal. Things would have gone much more smoothly and now I would have a better rate of acceptance (30% so far).
  11. I think the OP is on his time and should go after it if that's what he wants. I was in a similar spot one year ago (when I wrote "Is it a caveat that I have never had strong training in polisci? I mean, I had one or to[sic] courses, but can't say much about the field beyond educated common-sense"), and now I've been accepted at my top-choice. There were some mistakes along the way, mostly concerned with my GRE verbal and SoP, which I neglected. By the way, I've learned a lot with this book: http://www.amazon.com/Political-Science ... 971&sr=8-4 And this forum, too. Good luck.
  12. Check this new album: http://www.warchild.org.uk/heroes/ It is good. I mean, TV on the Radio covering Bowie, and other great cover acts (all asked by the original performer). Can't be bad.
  13. Is this a common practice? I still haven't heard from Duke :|
  14. there is no need to name names. I have no idea who she is.
  15. I am not the one asking at results page, but why oh why Duke has such an erratic system? I haven't received my rejection yet, but according to last year's no one got in after the first wave of acceptances. I mean, get a freakin intern!
  16. For the rejected at UIUC: were you on the wait list?
  17. Did you check yous status on the OSU's website? I found my kind rejection there yesterday.
  18. Hey, congrats! Did your status change in their website?
