I know! Since I have a different background (BA, MA in Economics, international applicant) I believe my process is more random than usual. I guess the "black box admission theory" played its part. On a side note, one LOR arrived way after the UIUC's deadline, only one week before they started sending notifications. I guess I can stop cursing the lazy professor now.

Once a professor in my school received the visit of an undergrad's mom, who was about to complain about grades. Before she could start talking, he asked her for one minute, reached for his phone, dialed a number, handed her the phone receiver and told her: "you can talk to my mother, too." True story. To the OP: I do think your professor handled your recommendation poorly, and you were right to go after it. I had a similar problem, and two of my letters arrived after the deadline. But the obsessive reminders and putting your mom in the middle points to immaturity. I hope you do well nonetheless, but if you don't I am sure you will learn from this situation and become a much stronger candidate.

Sopranos: hours concurs. During the last few months I've been watching "the Wire". Right now I'm at S04, and it is probably the best so far (they really screwed up on s02, don't you think?). On regular basis: Lost, House, Top Chef, 24, The Office (but I like the UK version better). Oh, and Curb your Enthusiasm. Larry is a god.

Apparently the chair of admissions from Duke posted this on job rumors, a week ago: Applications up dramatically, in quality and number. Though, of course, our existing set of grad students are all quite wonderful, mind you. Quite. Wonderful Don't send me emails, you Duke people. We love you. Biggest increase is in IR and Comparative. Very impressive. Quite a number of folks with law degrees, at really fine universities, are considering getting PhDs. We'll be sending out acceptances in about three weeks, maybe a little more.
