  1. Super Congrats! Iowa and Michigan!!! You're our board MVP
  2. I'm sure for international students they prefer to arrange convenient times prior to calling. Although it's good news, might be inconsiderate to wake someone up at 3am, lol
  3. This is MAJOR! Count that as a win, super congrats!! Where are you based??
  4. breathe deeply. it's just starting. folks are here with you!
  5. co-sign. from what i've gathered, most places are ok with a novel excerpt, but prefer the opening chapter and they expect that it not require set-up/context, should be able to speak for itself. you should definitely/must include a short story or two (depending on where you apply), and that's what will give them a sense of your ability to tell a story. I would refrain from mentioning anything related to a publisher or publishing, let your work speak for itself. you could inadvertently shoot yourself in the foot by making it seem you have things all figured out. in all the work they review they're looking for potential, to help you grow and get to the place of publication. to say you feel you're at a place where you're ready for publication would lead some to question, then what can we do for you? caveat, my comments are geared towards novels, most places love to see published short stories! shows commitment and hopefully talent!
  6. If this is an email acceptance, and they haven't yet provided the breakdown of actual offer, you should thank them and state in your weords how you're excited for the opportunity, and look forward to learning more via conversations or a campus visit. keep it short and sweet, they'll follow up with more substantive stuff later. hope that helps.
  7. Hi there, wanted to let you know you're in the section of Grad Cafe primarily for Creative Writing. You might want to hunt around and see if there are threads for your specific program or area of study. There's definitely a lot of overlap and folks talk about the process and anxiety a lot here, but you might also see advice that may not be suited for your program or process. Hope this is helpful!
  8. Looks like there was another fiction announcement today, but haven't seen anything for poetry.
  9. Late to party, but this is so dope. Congrats!!!!
  10. OMG, CONGRATS!!! very amazing
  11. Iowa has started notifying fiction.
  12. Congrats! Keep the good news coming!
  13. Congrats! Love the workmen-like no-nonsense approach
  14. Parasite did the damn thang.
  15. Hehe, wanted to give you a hard time, but check out some manga or anime ecchi (if you’re bold, check out some hentai — NSFW). not sure what you have access to, but there’s a US tv show, Bull. This past week it aired an episode, S04E13, child of mine. It was absolutely the best piece of tv writing I’ve seen in years: sharp, timely, complex. Hits the intersection of race, class, and technology in a retelling of the biblical Judgement of Solomon in very fresh and surprising way. I was shocked at how good an episode it was. I’m really stanning the episode writer, Marissa Matteo. Ridiculously talented. Watch it and you’ll understand how amazing her accomplishment for a platform not known for originality.
  16. Ha, very random, very vague what type of films are you talking about? Snuff? Rom Com? Animated porn films with narrative arcs? Which types of films do you enjoy? ?
  17. this might lighten your mood: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/the-iowa-writers-workshop-takes-on-the-iowa-caucus
  18. Salute! And to clarify, WUSTL for CNF, yes?
  19. I'm pretty sure that rejection is someone being cheeky and expecting to be rejected. They have their email receipt as tomorrow 2/6 (Could be from Asia, but tons of people are stalking WUSTL announcements, I would expect more noise if rejections were going out).
  20. Is there a particular admitted student event? If there's an opportunity to meet other potential students, then yes, that might be a great use of time. You might meet someone that you really connect with and that may impact your decision. If it's an ad hoc, self-designed visit, where you basically go around and maybe have a quick face to face with some faculty admin, may not be as beneficial to oyu if you've done it before. Only you know where the gaps are. In either case, will they connect you to current students you can ask questions?
  21. Awesome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. A number of folks I've spoken to in 2 year programs wish they had a third year for focus on their manuscript. It seems like in your first year you're finding your feet, and voice, and second year you're just getting into your groove. Several 2 year programs offer an optional third year, but funding is not guaranteed. As an international student, I wonder if a 3 year program helps mitigate some of the visa related stress? I'd be frazzled if in my second year I had to complete my manuscript AND worry about getting out of the country before my visa expires, sigh. Do you know if FSU or any other 3 year programs would consider waiving (if any) residency requirements or teaching requirements for year 3? That way you could complete your manuscript from home if you so choose, but have that flexibility with your visa. I know a number of doctoral students that do this. But yes, you have hard choices, but GOOD problems Congrats again!!
  22. Congrats on FSU!!! Tallahassee is a lot of fun. Only been there for pleasure so great to have at least one acceptance in hand. It’s fully funded for three years, yes? And third year is primarily focused on your thesis, yes? What are your considerations between a 2 and 3 year program?
