Hey all! I also got that email from Juilliard....?‍♀️

Have been meaning to follow up with a quick update. I ended up getting into both Brooklyn College and University of Iowa and last week accepted the offer at Iowa. Hopefully this meant movement on the Brooklyn waitlist for some of you (I was also briefly on the waitlist there!). Really excited to be moving out to Iowa though it feels surreal in this moment, and who knows what the next few months will bring in terms of challenges or changes. @zayzay looks like I will be there with you this fall!

Hope everyone is well. If anyone has any questions about either program or the process with each, feel free to message me! Best of luck to all in the lingering weeks of this crazy process, and with whatever is going on with Juilliard ?

I'm so excited! Would love to connect. Add me on Facebook @ Isaiah-Mikel Reaves

So...guys we need to have a conversation. We need to have a conversation about what would be the worst case scenario for many of us who have been accepted into a program. I posted a link to an article from Forbes saying that Boston University MIGHT (based on what happens) postpone the start of classes until JANUARY. I'd like to hear from the BU students on this forum. I'd like to know...from all of you who are accepted...what would you do in this scenario, since it's being floated around as a possibility if things are still bad. Again, the article says MAYBE but we truly don't know. Also...to those who plan on applying next cycle....do you think that if semesters are pushed back that would affect the next cycle?

    Hey all!

I’m currently pretty far out from applying to grad schools since I still have a year and a half left of undergrad (I wouldn’t be going to grad until Fall ‘22) I’m wondering what y’all would recommend to do to spruce up my resume so that I can stand out and have a good chance at acceptance.

Currently on my list is Northwestern, Brown, Tisch, UT @ Austin, CMU, Hunter, UCSD, UCLA, & Southern Illinois, but I’m going through this thread and seeing a bunch of others I’m interested in.

Right now I don’t have any produced work for the stage, but I wrote and produced a web series.

Really my questions/reasons for posting are:

-What should my resume have on it?

-What should I work toward now so that I stand out better?

-Are there any schools I should look into? (Hoping to stay out of NYC with a few exceptions)

-Are there any summer programs/internships you would recommend (for playwriting preferably, but anything in that vein would be rad)

-Any advice on how I can get ahead in the process (even though I still have two years to go)

    Thank you!

    A. Look for a program that is fully funded

    B. Apply for a Fringe Festival

    C. Do some readings

    D. Submit for some opportunities

  4. I also received my official rejection notice from UT Austin, but so thankful to Dr. Grapko for her personal response before the automated email went out. I emailed her back and thanked her for being part of my MFA journey. I also got my OFFICIAL acceptance letter from Iowa's graduate division and accepted through the portal. Has anyone else heard from Iowa? Curious to see if anyone'll be joining me. Congrats to the Brooklyn College acceptances BTW!

    Hello all,

Long time lurker here, like for a couple of months.  Not sure that my insights will be useful this late but, thought they might be worth sharing.

Here's how my first draft season (Finished undergrad Dec. 19) went down-

CMU - Waitlisted in February (Like many on here)

Brown, UCSD, Yale - Rejected (Also like many on here)

Didn't hear anything from Iowa and this late I think that's a no.

Rejected from BU. Thought the bilingual angle might give me a leg up, guess I was wrong. But I know Kate (a lot of mutual acquaintances) and she wrote a really heartfelt "don't give up letter". Warmed my heart- she's awesome.

Guillermo from ASU reached out to me and I have a phone interview Monday.

Already admitted to Texas Tech and I am seriously considering going if I can afford to move to Lubbock. It's a smaller, newer program but it sounds like they're really trying to restructure it. Plus Rebecca Gilman (personal hero and all around amazing human) is head of the program so, worth giving it a look for those of you applying next year for sure.

To everyone else best of luck, I figure with all of this COVID-19 panic we all ought to have some unexpected time to bunker down and write.

Hey! When did you get the interview request from Arizona?

yo @zayzay, how was Iowa campus? ? i've heard zip from Iowa and not really sure if I should still wait for the possibility of being your classmate there now... ?

Good morning everyone! Iowa was AMAZING. Honestly, I felt such a warmth from the faculty and students. Everyone was so kind. I accepted the offer last night, without hearing from Arizona or UT Austin. The school really made that much of an impression on me. I believe they have their finalists and are in the process of making final decisions, if that helps you as far as info. I am so honored. This forum has helped me so much. Sending the absolute best to EVERYONE because this journey can be exhausting.

  7. I also got the UC San Diego rejection. I actually called them a couple of weeks ago and they said that they were interviewing finalists at that time. So I already prepared myself for it beforehand. It is nice to have clarity. Travelling to Iowa tomorrow to see the campus...which also happens to be my 22nd birthday!!! So there's still reason to celebrate and I am thankful. I think of these things in terms of purpose and destiny. Still waiting to hear back from Arizona and Texas T&D over the next couple days.

  8. Honored, moved, and overwhelmed that I was officially accepted into Iowa today. I turn 22 next week and this is my very first year applying to MFA, so I had no idea what to expect. This process is, as we all know, incredibly difficult. And I celebrate all of you for embarking on this journey. I'd like to echo what was said in the previous post in saying that we all have reason to celebrate because we all have survived this process. There is still some waiting to be done, but I am so thankful for all of you and am sending you all amazing vibes. I started writing plays on my bedroom floor at eleven years old and it just means so much to have arrived here. Love you guys!

Oh dang! Haven't heard from them haha, so that's not looking too good! Oh well... Thank you for answering though! What day did you receive that email?

I'm sorry, friend. I reached out and got my reply on Feb. 25th. I just saw your post and thought I'd help out with some info.

Anybody apply to University of New Mexico's Dramatic Writing program?

Hey. I did not apply here ( I nearly did). I actually contacted them last week because I know they accept late apps until April 1st if spots are open. I was told that they've sent out acceptances when I contacted the department

  11. Yeah I called UCSD last week and they had moved onto interviews. SO I let it go and am just waiting on my other schools. I just don't know ANYTHING about Arizona's process and it doesn't seem like anyone here knows about it either haha. Iowa will probably be way later this month.

I haven’t applied to university of Arizona before: yay!’ We’re buddies in this..I don’t know what ya mean tho here:

what do you mean their deadline was this month? It was dec 15! I ask haven’t seen anyone write much about the program and I was surprised

Did you apply to creative writing or did you apply for dramatic writing through the Herberger institute? Because unless I'm confusing the deadline with something else (which is totally possible) I thought the deadline was February 1st. I spoke to Jeanette about getting my materials in and everything and finished in January.

I wondered if anyone applied to university of Arizona’s MFA creative writing program. Have you heard anything? I specifically wonder what it shows you when you got to the app page cause mine changed but doesn’t show a decision.

Yeah I also applied to Arizona. Since their deadline was this month, I don't know when we'll hear back or what their process is like. I just know that I haven't really seen anyone on the forum posting about the program. Did anyone here also apply to Arizona or have you applied in previous years?

I didn’t receive an interview request from Brown but I have received one from Northwestern and Tisch! I’m not too worried. I have two other schools that I’ll hear back from in April that don’t interviews.

Just curious as to what schools you applied to that don't do interviews. I know that there are some, I just don't know them by name

  15. Mental health is definitely first and to be honest....mine has taken a hit from this process. I feel very low and very exhausted and am having a difficult time keeping it together right now. This process is one of the most taxing and emotionally draining I've ever been through and I'm sure all of us feel that way to an extent. Does anyone have tips on how to make it through? Even if you don't get into any of your programs, how do you move forward?

Hey folks, a few updates. I was one of the people who went on the UT in-person interview over the last couple of days. There were three of us on the trip, and one local Austinite had interviewed before we arrived. It seems as if they're going to choose the class out of the four of us sometime before mid-March. A couple of details that I didn't know going in: 1) Last year's class size was only two people, and it seems like it may be the same thing for this year, though no one confirmed that one way or the other while I was there, and 2) As of last year, the program is fully-funded for playwrights. The Michener fellowship (for which I am currently on the wait-list) funds one student and the Theatre & Dance department now funds the other (or others as the case may be).

As for Hunter, I also live in the area, so I'm doing an in-person interview next week. I currently have not heard from UCSD or Yale, but I haven't been rejected either. Additionally, no news from Brown. I'm waiting on Brooklyn College and Iowa too, but I know that will likely be a while.

Was this only for Michener or was this for T&D? Like, were you all being interviewed for the Michener program?

  17. Just curious:
Has anybody here at all other than the two people who posted heard anything from UC San Diego or UT Austin? I'm just curious because I would expect to see some more on this forum about it.

    Thanks!

I’m expecting a rejection from every school I applied to now being rejected from two of the nine I’ve applied to thus far. And at this point I feel like giving up hope and on my dreams.

Hi I just saw this and it really spoke to me. I've had moments during this very long process when I feel like shutting down and giving up as well. Needless to say, as artists, we feel deeply and this can be emotionally draining. But I want to encourage you. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Many of us have not received definitive answers yet. When we do, we can sit with those feelings, but your dreams and your talent are valid. This process does not define you or your worth, regardless of what the outcome is. I've had to have these conversations with myself.  We get what's meant for us, and as creatives, we will find a way to make it work. I believe in you and support you. Don't stop writing. Please. Sending you positivity.

  19. Ok, assuming I'm out of the running there then. Again, huge congratulations! And thanks to everyone who has answered my questions. We're all in this together. Curious if anyone has heard from UCSD. Based on earlier posts in the forum, they usually reach out like this week or next, or so I've read.
