Hi everyone, I was just rejected from my top choice, and I was wondering what other people think are the best ways to improve one's application for future years. Has anyone had success with this or heard what worked for others? E.g. getting a Master's degree, trying to get publications in medium-tier journals of the discipline, working with a well-known professor and getting a letter of recommendation. Of course I know if there's a specific quantitative issue, such as low test scores, then that should be a focus.

Hi, I think a masters degree is a big commitment so if possible, you should check the profile of current phd candidate in your top choice school or better yet reach out to them for information before commit to that. I do agree with @instajar that research fit is the most important and if you can get a research project going you can reach out to the professors of that uni from platforms like research gate. You can also check for conferences where you have the chance to network with the faculty of that uni

Im sorry you got rejected but the admission process is quite biased and complicated so don't feel too down.

I applied to UBC and no results yet. I’m impatient to find out because I got accepted to two schools (rejected from one) and am waiting on two more. One of my acceptances was for University of Glasgow and they want a decision before I expect to hear back from the rest of my schools ??‍♀️

I think on their website they said you are encouraged to let the adcom knows if you need an earlier notice, maybe try writing them?

I applied to McMaster, York and Laurier for health policy. No updates yet. A friend of mine got an interview for the same program as me in Laurier, but she's applying for a masters. Should I be worried?

take this with a grain of salt but Im pretty sure PhD and masters normally dont have the same deadline, also Laurier adcoms work on rolling basis so if she applied earlier it is natural that she gets a callback before you .

I applied to 13 and heard back from 5 so far. Looking back I think it's too many, and may be 7-8 would be the best number.

wow, 13, that must have been a lot of work, yeah I also think I should have applied to 3 of the less known uni just to be sure. well no point crying over spilt milk. But good luck on your applications, hope you get callback for your first-choice program

    Hello everyone,
I'm so happy for those friends who have gotten interview invitations and notifications.

Has anyone heard from these schools (in OB/Org Studies/Management and Org)?

UCLA (Anderson), USC (Marshall), Carnegie (Tepper), U Penn (Wharton), Washington (Foster), MIT (Sloan)
    Toronto (Rotman), York (Schulich)

I haven't heard back from Rotman, I applied for OB but the survey on gradcafe made me thinks they would send out invites by mid Jan or end of Jan.

It looks like a lot of you already had some interviews, but I can share some thoughts. In business schools, research experience is helpful but most students don't have any, so it isn't a big deal to most faculty. I had research experience due to my background in psychology, and I don't think it helped me all that much. They want to know that you have some interest in their research areas, but don't be concerned if they don't want to hear all the details on your research questions - most students end up changing their interests/research questions as they go through the program and learn new things, so faculty may expect this. You want to have clear reasons though for applying to their program. I hope you all hear good news soon!

Thank you for the post, my first journal article won't be published before April and it's not aligned with the research interest of the programs I'm applying (as I'm just assisting my supervisor with his research) so I was a bit concerned.

They asked me very general questions like "why did you select our school? Will you come to our school if we accept you?". What made me feel worried/unsafe is that when I introduced my research interests, they cut me off before I went to specific research questions and moved on. So I didn't get a chance to introduce my specific research interests - I'm very concerned that they are not interested in my research lol And I definitely messed up when I introduced my past research experiences - a bit disorganized.

IMO, if you already stated your research interests in you SOP, they just cut you off cause they already read about it (and liked it) and prefer to ask other information. My supervisor does this all the time. No need to concern there. Also, I doubt they would interview you if your research interest doesn't align with that of the POI or the department.
