Same, my internship is virtual and I start in a couple of weeks. My GEM portal is still not updated. It still says I am missing transcripts (sent them in March) and lists me as "complete" (as opposed to GEM Fellow) even though I have already signed contracts with both my university and employer. I guess I am just waiting on GEM to sign off? What about you guys? Anyone officially a GEM Fellow yet??

Yeah my internship is virtual and has already started. GEM portal is also not updated and still says I'm missing transcripts even though I sent them back in like February, I also already signed with unviersity/employer. I think GEM has been impacted by this whole situation pretty hard so they are probably playing catch up at the moment.

  2. Has anyone else been receiving emails from GEM on how to send their transcripts/other required items? I sent my transcripts back in February but they still haven't updated eGEM, I want to contact them but in the email it states, "we will contact you if we are missing anything, no need to contact us".

Does anyone know if GEM provides $16K in financial support or is this provided by the university? I was under the impression that GEM would give $16k stipend for the first year.

Yes GEM does provide 16k for the first year of a phd program. If masters, then its 16k spread over 2 years, so 8k each year.

Yes, the cost for the university is the same. I would contact GEM, but it sounds like you have offers from other schools (or did have offers). The only reason I would be concerned is because the deadline to accept graduate school admissions for most schools was yesterday. So, if this was the school that you chose and you rejected the other universities; I am not sure if there would be much that can be done if there is no funding available. Also, GEM has set their deadline for universities and students to sign for April 19, so if you could get in touch with them tomorrow that would be best. I wish you the best of luck!

Yeah I have other offers, and only asked for extensions from the schools I was seriously considering. I will contact GEM and see what options are available if any, but I did not accept any offer yet. Also I thought the deadline to sign a university was May 1? Maybe I was mistaken, thanks for the heads up.

Can you be a GEM Associate fellow instead?

I don't think so because I have been paired with an employer, but isn't the cost for the university the same? Tuition + fees.

  6. My top choice GEM rep said they don't have the funding available in their department to match me as a GEM Full Fellow, am I out of luck with this school or should I talk to GEM about it possibly? Though I'm not sure there is much they could do.

Has anyone still not heard a decision from their preferred university? I have been selected by a company to intern this summer. I was hoping to hear the uni's decision by March, but they keep pushing things back.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you.

Out of pure curiosity, whose internship hasn't been cancelled yet? I'm still a little worried about us potentially losing our funding if we don't end up interning for our emloyers this summer. I have already signed my employment contract and received email confirmation from my first choice school that they are willing to accept me as a Full Fellow before all these virus shenanigans started.

My employer recently reached out saying that so far the internship program will proceed as planned. I think GEM and the employers are actively working to find a solution for this years interns.

I guess I phrased this poorly: did we already have to get a full ride in order to get the associate level/university level? Or do we leverage our gem application for that?

If you have been selected by an employer then yes leverage your GEM app, otherwise I believe (correct me someone if I'm wrong) the universities will reach out expressing their interest in a university/associate fellowship. Though I don't see anything wrong with reaching out to the university for associate/university.

But for the full fellows rejects the employer part need not apply, right?

I think if you reject an employer sponsor then you are effectively rejecting the fellowship, if that's what you meant. Otherwise, GEM is solely the facilitator in different levels of the fellowship. If you have a Full Fellowship then the employer and university work together to create a full package (possibly with some help from GEM?). For associative and university levels it is solely  the university (and possibly GEM).

Just to be more specific, does the GEM consortium pay the university for tuition and 16K stipend for the student only for 1 year and the remaining years is taken up by the university?

I think GEM acts as the facilitator in funding. The university and employers create the full package, at least according to the FAQ they sent out a while back.

I've been accepted by a couple of the schools and when I select the University Acceptance option on the portal it says "In order to complete your application, we need to know which university you intend to matriculate through. At least one university has indicated that you have been accepted and that they are willing to sponsor you." When selecting and rotating through the options, all the school names remain red. Do any of you know if this means anything? Or should I reach out to the schools to figure this out? Thanks

Definitely reach out to the schools and GEM to figure this out.

Has Amazon reached out to any of you? My first interview with them was over three weeks ago, but they have not been able to schedule my second interview for some reason. Is anyone experiencing a really slow interview process?

I would imagine it is slow at the moment considering the upcoming deadlines to select GEM Fellows, so patience is obviously important. Three weeks though seems a bit long so I would definitely follow up with either your GEM contact or recruiter.

@orchidaceae I would go for it. I reached out to an employer in December and got a positive response. I'll be interning with them this summer. Was able to accept offer on eGEM about a week ago, but still haven't gotten an official letter.

I accepted an offer with an employer as well (the rep also specifically said they marked the eGEM system), but I still haven't gotten a notification through eGEM and its been 2 weeks.

  15. Hi everyone, I already accepted an offer from a GEM Employer but I have yet to hear an official response from GEM and the employer said they have already contacted GEM about it. Does anyone know if the school verification has an impact on this? Half of the schools I applied to still haven't updated my status.
