  1. I just accepted an offer for UC Davis Comp Lit. Now sitting around in terror. Anyone currently attending/planning on attending for English?
  2. Hey! Sounds like a lot of places do things very differently; I've heard that a lot of Comp Lit interviews are conducted at least in part in your main language. When I interviewed with UCDavis, it was a pretty informal thing that lasted maybe 25ish minutes. My primary POI was on sabbatical, so it was another POI and a professor who was peripherally involved in my area (only insofar as we both do Modernism; he was a completely different language). All we really did was discuss some of my application material; I was asked to expand on some work I mentioned in my SoP and discuss what it was about. It overall kind of had a more conversational flow than an interview one, though there was some structure of clearly there was some stuff they wanted to get at (such as asking me to talk about that paper), as well as to give me a chance to ask questions. It was also two months ago and I was super nervous, so I'm having a hard time remembering anything else other than all this, ha. Hope I was able to help at least a little bit!
  3. Thank you!! I'm not 100% sure I'll be going-- I'm the #1 waitlist at a diff school's German department (and they're actually appealing the school to try to get me accepted), and I'm waiting to hear back from one final school for what I'm assuming is a rejection. So it'll be a tossup of UC Davis and the unnamed other one I do Jewish lit, mostly German, but also Slavic/Yiddish lit a bit, as well. I think I got in off the waitlist for UCD. I'm honestly in complete shock. I thought I had totally bombed my interview.
  4. Thank you so much! I'm crossing my fingers super, super hard for you. It came at a weird time for me (I think it was about 6pm for them), and on a Saturday...? But who knows; maybe they're going thru a few meetings before they can offer admission? I really, really hope it works out for you.
  5. I JUST GOT IN TO UC DAVIS WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!! 6 years' funding!!! i'm so hoping this means good things for my other fellow confused applicants like @Magic Lanternoh my god i'm going to puke. i was at work and my boss thought something terrible had happened because i screamed his name and was laugh-crying.
  6. thanks! i need it hai'mlosingit. I was one of the second wave of Cornell rejections. I did put down German as a secondary department for them, but I doubt I'll get into that program. Their Comp Lit was a better fit for me than their German dept is.
  7. i'm pretty much holding out hope now on only one place, and for German. I spoke with a POI last year and he said that they interview. i don't want to be That Guy who emails the department to ask if all interview requests have gone out, but i'm tempted bc apps were extended to the end of jan, and they say they also continue to review on a rolling basis. so i would imagine that by now, they would have decided if they want to interview me or not...? idk, if anyone has any thoughts or input into this situation. i feel crummy l o l
  8. Well Cornell is sending out another round of rejections ?
  9. Nope, heard nothing from either. I think one or two UCLA acceptanced were boarded though....? Edit--oops, just realized I opened the wrong tab of GradCafe threads I keep open 25/7. I applied to both places for Comp Lit.
  10. Send me a DM if you'd like! I went back for my MA after being out of school for 5 years, so my perspective might be a bit different from what you'd like, but I can offer any insight from my (rather specific) perspective, how I managed, etc.
  11. Quick question for anyone who knows the answer: what exactly is this "healthy coping" i hear of? I'm too old for all of this. Do i reapply? I have (insert list of vague responsibilities)

  13. jumping in from the comp lit thread just to let you guys know (since you're talking about cornell, too)--comp lit deadline was 10 january. historically, it looks like they generally let acceptances know around early feb, and then rejections in march; however, this year, they sent out a bunch of rejections. there was one interview on the board (last time anyone boarded an interview was...i think only one in 2018?), and no acceptances. some of us have not heard back at all though, and it looks like we're all in different fields. all to say...it looks like cornell might be a bit odd this year.
  14. Not really quick, just maybe...odd, how different from past years this cycle apparently is.
  15. Not to harp TOO much on Cornell, but I've gotta say, it's really weird to look at their history here and see a) never any interviews before, and b) they notified around now of acceptances at least last year, and of rejections no earlier than the end of Feb. And our deadline to apply was in January! Just seems weird
  16. That's what I'm thinking/hoping, though I heard that they usually alert us to let us know that's happening?
  17. UCDavis acceptances on board, UCLA acceptance as well. I interviewed with UCD and have yet to hear back. ouch.
  18. Still waiting on my rejection from Cornell. I'd rather get it over with. Dont know why it hasn't come yet. Ugh
  19. reddit.com/r/gradadmissions ! They're more directed toward STEM/comp sci/etc., but there's some helpful stuff
  20. Nice! That sounds super interesting, to someone whose head that is way over I do C and E European (mostly German) and Jewish, politics, etc
  21. Thanks for making this thread. What are your guys' areas of focus?
