  1. It's been a while since I posted this. I have decided to leave the program and I am currently waiting to hear back from job and transfer applications. It is a complicated situation that involves me filling a DEI grievance against my advisor. I am angry and sad and excited all at once but mostly I am grieving the end of something.

  2. Okay, maybe "toxic" is a strong word, but I am truly not enjoying my grad school experience for reasons I cannot publicly talk about. (Feel free to DM.)

I already have a graduate degree from an Ivy League so I am mostly just doing this Art History MA because I love art, but I am so burnt out and this program has been so bad for my wellbeing. I don't want to turn Art History into something I hate just because of my experience with it in the academia though. I have considered dropping out honestly, but it is not really an option because I would have to leave to US if I dropped out. (International student here.)

How would you cope in that situation?

I know some people on here got accepted to Syracuse. Anyone else get into UMASS Amherst, Case Western or Penn State? They gave good funding and I am trying to decide where is best....

I will be attending Case Western this Fall! They gave me full tuition + $15,000 a year stipend. This was actually my second time applying. I got into Case Western and NYU IFA for Fall 2020 but decided to go to Yale for a Master’s in religion. My subfield is medieval art so I’ll be studying with Elina Gertsman.

I applied for PhD in Asian Religion at Emory. I’ve not received any rejection and interview mail. Is it good or bad? It’s my first round to apply, so I can’t guess anything.

Based on what I saw last year, Emory tends to send out their interview invitations and decisions on a rolling bases.

What is your discipline? I'm waiting to hear back from Duke as well.

Duke's already finished their interviews I believe. I didn't get an invite so I am crossing it off my list now. Based on what I have been seeing from previous years they may release their decision next Tuesday.

Edit: I was talking about their Early Christianity interviews. Not sure if other concentrations were doing interviews.

  6. Hi All! I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself!

I am currently at YDS, and this is my second application cycle. My concentration is NT/EC. Last year I didn't get into anywhere, but I did get an interview from Duke.

This year I am applying for Yale, Harvard, Duke, Brown, UNC, UVA, and Marquette. I had my interview with UNC last week and was told that I would hear back in late Jan.

Hoping for the best and best of luck to every one!

That's great! I'm happy to know that you're enjoying your program. It would've been a nightmare to put in so much work (both leading up to and during the Ph.D. program) and not enjoy your time there. And good advice about the advisor! A prof. made a similar observation, so that's definitely something good to keep in mind.

Any advice for the interview? I received an email today from one of the schools saying they want to meet (via Zoom) and "further discuss your credentials." What are some common things that come up during the interview? What should I leave out/ say as I interact with them? Any input is welcome!

I hope your interview went well! Would you mind sharing which school that was? Thanks!

  8. Hi All,

I am applying for PhD programs for the second time this Fall, but I am worried that I might not get into anywhere again. What should I do as my backup? Any good one year programs? I am also open to do a degree in art history or philosophy. Thanks y'all!

Nothing on this end. Fingers crossed for today. Anyone heard anything from BU? There was one acceptance posted a few weeks ago, but not sure of its validity.

If you mean Boston University... I have heard about 3 acceptances so far and they all came out at different times, via phone call from potential advisors. I didn't apply to BU so that's all I know.
