Congrats! That's exciting! Choosing is really hard. I'll probably go off of wherever ends up being the least expensive for me. I'm boring that way.

I got accepted Saturday as well! It's an acceptance to the online rather than the residential program, and I can't help but be a tad disappointed. I shouldn't complain, though. I did indicate I'd be willing to do the online option when I was applying. Now that I've heard back from everyone I just have to decide what my least expensive option is.

I'm facing a similar problem. There are not MLIS programs in my state, so I'm looking at out of state tuition no matter where I choose to go. As I'm graduating this May, I have no resources to help pay for my graduate study. I know that at least one school I applied to has allowed people to defer admission for a year, so I'm seriously considering taking a year off, living with my parents, getting and job, and saving all my earnings so that my loans won't have to be quite as big. Very disappointing, but I'm trying to look at the bright side. A year off of school sounds very nice. I've been going nonstop since Kindergarten, so maybe a year break is well deserved.

What has everyone studied before LIS/Archival?
lydibird replied to Weepsie's topic in Library Sciences Forum
I'm finishing up my BS in biochemistry with minors in psychology and sociology. I'm planning on becoming a science librarian in a university or maybe a government library. If I ever figure out how to pay for my MLIS, that is... -

Yes. I know that the best jobs I could get with my bachelors are jobs I would abhor after a few months. It doesn't make sense to wait when I know that do do anything "fun" I'd need a graduate degree.

What's the story behind your avatar or username?
lydibird replied to katerific's topic in Waiting it Out
Well, I have yet to find an image that I want to be associated with me, so I have no avatar at the moment. As for my user name, it's just a nickname that my parents called me as a little girl and still occasionally call me. My name is Lydia, which shortens to Lydi/Lyddie (depending on if you ask me or my dad...). Anyway, my dad played off of Lady Bird Johnson and I became Lydi Bird. Drove me nuts as a kid. "BUT I'M NOT A BIRD!" Ha ha ha. It was better than my other childhood nickname. I'm glad this one is the one that stuck. -

This exactly. I didn't ever change majors. I've been a biochemistry major since I applied to college. I thought about changing several times, but in the end I loved my science classes too much. I did end up tacking on psychology and sociology majors and have taken classes in tons of other areas like computer science and archaeology. My ridiculously broad interests are a major reason I decided to get a masters in library science rather than go for a PhD in the life/chemical or social sciences

Nervous twitch (I haven't had a nervous breakdown yet, but I do have a nervous twitch whenever I think about my lack of funding so far!)

Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't considered most of those. I don't drink at all and don't eat out often, but I could probably cut back on some aspects of my budget. Clothes, maybe? Hmmm... that's going to hurt! My parents don't have money to lend me right now, but I can speak with my department and alumni association. Or my grandma might be able to help me out... *wheels turning as I decide how many people I should beg for money* I bet that teenage bagger at the grocery store could help me out, too. He probably has more income than I do right now.

I've been accepted to several schools who have invited me to attend visiting days. I'm still an undergrad with almost no money, and while I want to attend I just don't know how I'll afford it. I've spoken to two schools about my dilemma, and they said that they could pay for a hotel and food, but none are able to pay for my airfare. I don't think this is unusual for my field, but it is frustrating. I'm still waiting on one more school, too, and if accepted I expect I'll want to attend their visiting days as well. Has anyone had any luck finding alternative ways to pay for these visits? I could probably afford to attend one of these visiting days out of my pocket, but how could I choose which one?

I'm in a similar boat. So far I've heard absolutely nothing about funding from anyone (besides forwards of postings for GA positions I'm not qualified for). Plan A is to start my MLIS this fall but without funding I absolutely can't afford grad school. I've been accepted to a couple places that would let me defer admission for a year, so my plan B is to move back in with my parents and work full time as a lab tech and part time at the job I've had since high school. Not really a happy plan as I haven't really enjoyed lab work for a couple years, but at least I'd be earning a reasonable amount of money.

I hate it when people tell me I will get in.
lydibird replied to everygirl's topic in Waiting it Out
Ugh. Now that I've been accepted to some really good programs this is happening but about funding. I have to get some sort of funding to be able to afford the out of state tuition (there are no MLIS programs in my state) but I know funding for MLS students is really scarce. My best chance is Michigan, but they probably won't say anything for another week or so. Everyone keeps saying I'm going to get funding and I kind of want to hit them all and say that there isn't much funding for us, especially right now. Stop giving me a false sense of security already! I have a plan B, but the idea of being a lab tech for a year performing endless PCR cycles makes my soul die a little. I really hope I don't have to defer for a year. -
I have no opinion on this matter. But I do feel my lack of opinion is so important that I had to reply.
