    Yeah for sure!!
I'm a first time applicant and I'm graduating in 2022 from my undergrad in Education in Teaching English as a Second Language at McGill. So, it's not just Psych and Ling majors that get in (which is what I was quite nervous about)! Education in Quebec is a 4 year program (so a 5 year program for those coming from high school in other provinces).
    CGPA: 3.93
    SUBGPA: 3.97 (according to ORPAS)
I have volunteered at a Speech clinic and I ended up getting a job there right after as an administrator (I currently still work there).
I'm currently also working as an ABA therapist and a substitute teacher. I have loads of teaching experience because of my internships and in my LOI I emphasized why I believed teaching was the best foundation to get into SLP (I knew I wanted to go into SLP before I started my undergrad).
I also volunteered at an old age home a little while ago. There's a couple other things on my CV but they are from a while ago (day camp, student council, consortium, etc.)
I have absolutely NO research experience.
Honestly, I think McGill reviews applications really holistically (unlike McMaster for example), I would just do everything in your power to embellish your CV as much as possible so you can look back, know you did everything you could and have no regrets! Good luck everyone still waiting, you got this!! ❤️

Accepted S-LP and Audiology at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia… I just cannot believe it. I haven’t work as much for something than to get accepted into grad school. It’s not my universityof choice, but it still feels amazingly great to know that hardwork pays off. I’m a black man that grew up in a tough neighborhood in Montreal and never applied myself in highschool and to have been accepted into grad school, I just can’t believe it.
    Stats:
Bachelor’s of Education 3.93 GPA UQAM Montreal QC, CANADA
    150 hours volunteering with S-LP
Research Assistant at University of Montreal and McGill university
Substitute teacher ESL at my old highschool.
Now I have to worry about tuition and moving but still… wow … just don’t know how to react…

I would say yes. I can recall from a previous forum someone who didn't get an acceptance asked what they could do to improve their application and the response from the admissions was to increase the prerequisite grades.

My assumption is yes. I could be wrong, but most people applying have fairly competitive sGPA's so if they need something to distinguish they'd probably look at that as last measure.

CDA here! You're totally right that the lack of regulation makes it murky. I've found that employers in Ontario are strict about only taking applicants who have the CDA certificate because it makes a difference in how much training would be needed on their end. The CDA program gives the benefit of a full year of intensive training on how to do speech therapy including 4 months of full time placement, so when I got a job I was able to hit the ground running seeing clients right away. However -- once an SLPA gets their training and gets more experience with doing speech therapy our roles would look pretty much the same!

I didn't end up needing any specific certifications for my position. If someone else who did have an actual CDA certificate had applied, they probably would have gotten the position instead of me, but honestly I was super lucky! I was able to make the argument that my combination of education (Linguistics degree with psych minor) and experience (behaviour intervention, volunteering with SLPs, etc) was equivalent to one of the certifications they would have asked for. I don't know how common this is compared to places being really stringent with their requirements, but I always try to look at the "required qualifications" section of job postings as more of a wish list rather than a must-have!
In terms of the differences in roles between SLPAs and CDAs, I'm honestly not that sure. What what I've heard, it depends a lot more on your employer and setting than your title. At least where I am in BC, the certifications seem to be a bit of a murky issue as they're not regulated the same way that other job titles are. My supervising SLP and I spent a bunch of time trying to figure this out early on, as we wanted to make sure that we were all above board in the way that we set up my role. In the end, it didn't seem to matter what job title I went by and what my background was, as long as she supervised me up until the point where she felt comfortable with my level of competence. If you are also in BC and want to know more of the specifics, feel free to shoot me a message!

Thats amazing! Did you need a CDA certificate to become an SLPA? Could you elaborate more on the differences in roles between CDAs and SLPAs?

For those who have graduated, and have probably applied to SLP multiple times, what jobs have you worked in the mean time to gain more experience?

I don't know how many they had last year, but I believe they dropped the GRE requirement this year, which was the the thing stopping me from applying there in the past. Combine that with no specific course prerequisites, I'm thinking this program became more popular since it became that much easier to submit an application. In addition, it seems that applications to all SLP programs have been becoming more competitive year over year.
Could be wrong, just thought think out loud haha.

Looks like mid B standing is reference to the final year (aka 5 credits), so it would be the average rather than minimal for all 5 credits. Only thing that needs to be at a certain grade are the prereqs as they specifically say and bolden the word each in their wording.
    Hope that helps

I think UofT sends acceptances around midnight but rejections the morning after. I got my rejection around 9 am.

I checked in with McMaster (3 calls and 2 emails later) turns out they made a mistake! They received my lower sGPA that was not updated yet, so it took me out of the running. McMaster said that ORPAS was way late updating it so they did not receive the correct sGPA... Either way, they assessed me at my correct sGPA and I got an interview! I am so glad I followed up with the school, thank you everyone for your kind words and encouragement!!!!!
Goodluck to all my fellow MMI people, and to everyone else in their applications!

Hey everyone! Last year I was rejected from every school I applied to and I knew I wanted to apply in Canada again but I didn't know what to do while I waited until the 2022 application cycle. I accidentally found Minot State University, and it's a school in North Dakota (USA) that offers super cheap tuition (like - basically the same price as many Canadian schools) and they offer a Post-Baccalaureate in Communication Sciences and Disorders, which I'm currently doing. Basically it's a one-year program that provides you with sooo much clinical experience, they have an on-campus CSD clinic, and all of your profs are practicing SLPs and audiologists. Also, with the completion of the program you're offered admission into their 2 year SLP program. So basically, I'm reapplying to Canadian schools this year, but if I don't get into a school in Canada, I have this SLP program as a backup (AND it's literally the same price as if I were to go to a Canadian school!).  Another great thing is that there are so many Canadian students in the program too. Definitely would recommend checking the program out if you're interested, or you can DM me if you want more info
Also looool reading this back it sounds like an ad, but I swear it isn't! I just really like the program haha

hello! this component was always there on their website however it is rare for them to request an interview. Its more of a clarification thing if anything and from what I know, I don't think any of the students in my cohort were asked to give one! Hope that helps

Hey, I did notice the interview subheading on the UofT admissions page for SLP. I'm not sure if that was added to the website this year or if I just haven't noticed it in past years. Based on what the website says, it doesn't seem like they will be interviewing all applicants. I also feel like we would've heard some sort of larger announcement by now (i.e. via email) if those are their intentions. This is just my interpretation though! I guess we'll have to wait and see

It depends on how many courses you took in winter 2020. So if you took 4 courses that winter, ur sGPA would be out of 16/20 courses. If you took 3, then it would be out of 17/20 courses. If you took 5 courses that winter semester, then it would be out of 15/20 courses. so it just depends on how many courses you took!
