  1. I didn't get in last year, so I kept working as an SLPA, took a handful of relevant 300 and 400-level courses online to boost my GPA, and reached out to a former prof who let me take part in some research she was doing. I got accepted to UBC this year, so I guess all that must've helped! If you're able to get any feedback from school on your applications, or if you have a sense of where your weaknesses were, I'd say just do what you can between now and next year to round out your resume and strengthen your application for next year. And of course, be kind to yourself and just try to stay sane through this whole draining process!
  2. I just got into UBC as well! Also they offered me an entrance scholarship, which I was absolutely not expecting - anyone else get that too? I got rejected by Western and still haven't heard from U of A so have kind of been assuming that's a rejection as well, so I guess the decision might be made for me lol. But it would be nice to know for sure!
  3. I didn't end up needing any specific certifications for my position. If someone else who did have an actual CDA certificate had applied, they probably would have gotten the position instead of me, but honestly I was super lucky! I was able to make the argument that my combination of education (Linguistics degree with psych minor) and experience (behaviour intervention, volunteering with SLPs, etc) was equivalent to one of the certifications they would have asked for. I don't know how common this is compared to places being really stringent with their requirements, but I always try to look at the "required qualifications" section of job postings as more of a wish list rather than a must-have! In terms of the differences in roles between SLPAs and CDAs, I'm honestly not that sure. What what I've heard, it depends a lot more on your employer and setting than your title. At least where I am in BC, the certifications seem to be a bit of a murky issue as they're not regulated the same way that other job titles are. My supervising SLP and I spent a bunch of time trying to figure this out early on, as we wanted to make sure that we were all above board in the way that we set up my role. In the end, it didn't seem to matter what job title I went by and what my background was, as long as she supervised me up until the point where she felt comfortable with my level of competence. If you are also in BC and want to know more of the specifics, feel free to shoot me a message!
  4. This is my second time applying, and I was lucky enough to find a job as a school-based SLP assistant right after graduating with my degree in linguistics, so I've been doing that for the past 2.5ish years. During my undergrad, I worked as a behaviour interventionist, and I have continued to do some respite care for Autistic kids/youth on the side, as well as a bit of tutoring. I haven't managed to get my foot in the door for any real experience with adults though, thanks to covid!
  5. Does anyone know when U of A plans to start releasing their admission decisions? I know it won't be for a while yet, but they seem to have removed any mention of decision dates from their website. It would be nice to have even a vague time frame to be counting down to haha
  6. Does anyone know if the deadline for UofA references is a hard cut-off today or if they continue to accept them late? I just realized one of my references hasn't submitted their letter yet and I'm panicking!
  7. No help here, since I'm currently enrolled. But I'd also like to know more about the final if anyone has some insight, since the fact that it's worth 80% is stressing me out a bit!
  8. I haven't and it's driving me crazy! I'm assuming it'll be a rejection at this point since they've already sent out acceptance and waitlist offers, but it'd be nice to know for sure :(
  9. Does anyone know what size Western's program is? I just got a rejection email and it said they had 535 applications!!! That makes me feel slightly less bad about not getting a spot, although I'd even be thrilled with a waitlist position at this point ?
  10. I haven't heard anything. Their website just very generally says "April" as far as when applicants will be notified, and apparently they've been inconsistent/late in the past few years.
  11. Same here! I'm so tired of waiting and stressing, and not having a definitive end date is killing me. The vague "April" answers from schools are brutal. Like we know Western lets everyone know April 1st, but will we hear from others April 2nd? April 14th? Later? Aaaaagh!
  12. I don't know how much their program focuses on it, but at UofA's OASIS conference in the fall, they had a speaker who specializes in voice therapy, and she did her Master's there. This is her website if you're interested! https://www.sablechan.com/
