I think it was funding related. The DoD increased spending in the program but made changes to it such that the price per student went way up. It was a whole thing. They planned on 200 and then awarded 69. There's a reddit about it.
-
We could all go tweet at them. lol
-
I think a couple years ago the awardee/alternate list was really skewed with like 3x more alternates than awardees.
-
Part of me feels like the people with the Feb update and the three April updates are gonna get awarded. #JumpingToEvenMoreConclusions

They're not emails. We're checking the site really often like the little psychos we are.

I thought so! That said, don't get too hung up on the dept for MIT. It's super easy to not just get pigeon holed. My partner is in one dept due to admissions purposes but does his work in an entirely different dept with a coadvisor & it's actually their coadvisor that fully funds them and all of their research is in the other dept.

Asking cuz from a different thread I saw you got into my UG school and if they were playing games I would have brought it up next visiting committee haha.
-
Who is making this contingent for you? Asking cuz this kind of stuff makes me mad.

I'm about 12 hours in to a dynamics pset with a glass of champagne in hand and this GIF definitely got me. 10/10

I think the first round is by the subject matter experts so don't think it's just GRE/GPA based.
-
LOL right? I'm kinda hopeful that they won't hold lack or low # of publications against us though. I've long operated in environments where a lot of my work is subject to export control and n foreign nationals may not work on it, and I can't even use external shops/labs if they don't meet certain criteria so you can't necessarily publish a lot or often.

In past years it seems like the status once all fellowships were awarded did say how far you got. So hopefully!
-
Yeah, honestly a lot of sketchy things happened right around submission. I had a friend's application be "unsubmitted" then they gave her a really small time window to resubmit which she missed because we were both super hosed that weekend not really keeping up with our email and then they were like well there's always next year!
-
Right so that's mean based on reviewer not the whole pool. But I think I understood you differently, earlier. I do get that you meant ranking post Z-score now.
-
Hmm. Are you sure? Z-scores are typically used to eliminate reviewer bias. I'm a reviewer of applications on a couple of national outreach programs and we use these to make sure that people who randomly get placed with reviewers who mainly give out average scores and rarely give top marks are not shafted compared to those who get reviewers who basically give everyone a gold star. So the means would only be reviewer specific not for the entirety of the pool.

I hope they tell us tomorrow!

I don't think the first screening was a GPA/GRE Screening before sending to review. I think it's literally just completion and to have things make sense and for first pass on performance. I put the wrong year of graduation for my Masters and they came back asking me to fix it before they could pass it on and this happened after the deadline. I also had a friend whose app was not accepted (due to a technical error on Sysplus' end) but they also told her about this afterwards. Also, I feel like if it was a GPA/GRE check it would be for really low scores like definitely below 70% and i don't think most of us would fall into that.
-
I can talk myself into being awarded and not, hahaha. My GRE wasn't the best, but the rest of my application was really strong and I was got HM on GRFP so that gives me hope. At the same time, if the goal of the fellowship is to increase the number of scientists/engineers with advanced degrees working on topics of military importance, I'd be a terrible choice because I ONLY did DoD product development work while in Industry (I'm a non-traditional student) and my advisor probably put in my app that I turned down a position in a funded projected in his lab this past year because it wasn't directly defense related.
-
Same boat. My GPA from UG was decent, my Grad one less so, and my GRE is like 5+ years old at this point so I'm really not sure how that helps anyone here. I kinda wish we could get feedback like we do for GRFP.
-
@GradNt unreasonable hour for me, I'm EST.. though I blame animal crossing...
-
I did and from fl1989's message so did they. Unsure about Curie. My guess it's going to be branch dependent and they're updating as new info from each branch comes in?
-
Well if it gives any of you a nice giggle today, I was looking through the documents I submitted and realized that I legit left "Sometime next decade" on there for NDSEG. LOL
-
Mine were both pretty similar. The big difference I think was that for NSF I focused more on the benefit my work could provide to autonomous consumer applications and for NDSEG it was more focused on how my work was critical for mission assurance in contested environments.

Erm so I found a ppt while searching for something on a different fellowship and in it are two slides from the lady that is the DoD program manager for this fellowship and they have selection criteria (loosely) and a proposed timeline though unsure how this holds up given everything going on in the world rn. slides 30-37 for those interested http://www.oasdre-hbcumiworkshop.com/2019_presentations/07-Wisecarver_Robinson_HBCU_Workshop_with_AFOSR_overview.pdf
