The interview was only about 30 seconds and they didn't even ask for my I-20! I believe, your current I-20 should be fine.

Update: My F-1 visa got approved yesterday. Thank you all!

I think it's all depend on which state you are going!

I have some dramatic development regarding the whole visa fiasco. My initial appointment at Toronto US consulate got cancelled on early July. Consequently, I deferred my admission to Spring 2021. Last Friday, I have received an e-mail from US consulate mentioning they have started holding appointments for F-1 visa aspirants and if I want 10th August can be booked for my interview. Then I called my university to postpone my deferral and restate my original Fall 2020 admission. Now I am waiting for the interview! Roller coaster ride for last few days!!!

This morning I e-mailed the US consulate in Toronto and they said, despite the phased resumption of visa service, they are unable to provide any visa except emergency at this moment. Emergency only means health care workers relavant to COVID-19.

That's a fantastic news. May I know which embassy is that? My first appointment at Toronto US consulate got cancelled. Deferred my admission and now my interview will be on 16th October. I hope it won't get cancelled this time. -
Yes, that's right. May be school opening is a first step towards getting the visa, I am trying to be hopeful though!

Let's keep it simple instead analyzing the situation from political point of view! I am not an american, neither do I hold any interest in american politics. My sole interest regarding US is to attend my PhD program and finish it successfully! I do hope, we all get our visa on time to attend grad school, cheers! -

To my understanding, as Mr. Trump has suspended entry from Schengen zone, even if you are eligible for visa, US Consulate in Paris may choose not accept an interview appointment at this time. I had my visa interview initially on July 20 in Toronto, which got cancelled. I booked another one immediately on September 18 and then deferred my admission to Spring. Yesterday again, just out of fear thinking situation may not improve in September, I re-scheduled my appointment in early November. I am kind of in a middle of a storm! Are you planning to defer your admission to Spring? -
Any update on your expedite processing request on visa application?

It's not allowing me to change the DS-160 number! It is saying, if I have to change any application information except passport number, I have to cancel the appointment first and then I will be able to edit all the application information including DS-160 number -

Guys, I have a question regarding DS-160. I have deferred my admission to Spring 2021. My current DS-160 which I created fro Fall 2020 has 10th August 2020 as an intended to entry to USA. Now, do I have cancel that DS-160 and create a brand new one? My fear is, if I do that, I have to cancel my current appointment on 18th September, and in the process may not be able to book another one very soon as all the US consulates in Canada are booked till November. TIA!!! -

US embassy in Canada also have similar provision regarding F-1 visa. When I e-mailed them to confirm, then they mentioned only COVID related cases will get priority. May be you can also send US embassy in Japan an e-mail! -

Update: I have been in constant touch with Ottawa US embassy and I must say they have laudable communication skill. The summary of my correspondence is- Ottawa US embassy will only issue a visa if it is related to COVID-19, e.g. health care workers, COVID-19 researchers, and family of COVID-19 affected people. All other visa issuance are postponed until further notice. I am pretty sure, I will have to defer my admission to 2021 spring. -

There is no specific reason to be honest! Canada did great handling the covid issues, but our southern neighbor is still struggling and that struggle can linger longer then expectation. I really hope things will get better in coming days and we all get our visa before the spring semester. Are you also applying from Canada? -

My visa appointment on July 20 at Toronto US Consulate has got cancelled yesterday. I immediately booked another appointment on September 18 but unfortunately my class will start on August 17. I requested expedite processing but the emailed me back saying all the visa interview appointments are cancelled through the months of July. Seems to me, deferral to the spring semester is the only available option for me. Beside, my admission was not a central admission rather with a specific supervisor. I have to explain that to him also. Also, I am in doubt, US consulates in Canada may not issue non-immigrant visas at all through out 2020. If that happens joining my PhD program even at spring seems like a distant dream now. I am super stressed! -
If it is okay to share, may I ask from where you applied for the visa?
