  1. Really? I got my mail today in Minnesota and so did a friend.

I was not successful. I'm so upset.

I'm only in my first year though so I will try again.

    WAHHHHHHHHHHHH

once again, no mail in minnesota :(

  2. I'm in the midwest too. I'll post as soon as I hear something. I'm hoping for tomorrow!

Still waiting wondering how much longer it will take the mail. You think it will be this week for sure :(

It almost has been a month since we thought we would hear news...

BTW thanks for posting this because I am 3 hours from my mailbox and so I am waiting to hear from someone in the US before I make my long trip to get my mail.

  3. It's good money, and provides good signal.

If I were to apply anywhere, I would definitely let them know of SSHRC or any other form of funds that were awarded.

Agreed. Americans definitely know about it.

  4. In US, received mail but not from SSHRC....more waiting and I must postpone a trip I was about to take tomorrow. Now I must drive 6 hours just to check my mail....got to do what I got to do.

    Still hopeful..

Where in the US are you?

Okay, I just saw that you're in Arkanasas. Hmmm. I wonder if mail takes longer to you than to me in Minnesota.

  5. Anyone in the US get their mail yet today? I'm in the Midwest and it hasn't come yet. I'm thinking it'll be here in the next few hours. It's so weird just thinking the decision is OUT THERE!

  6. Can someone explain the May vs. September start date? I am currently in my 1st year of the PhD, so if I get SSHRC (praying/fingers crossed/knocking wood), I will get it for 3 years. I just assumed it starts in September, but it would be amazing to have the money before the summer. What are the pros/cons? Why would it start in May anyway? Thanks. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

  7. I'm also in the Midwest. The mail hasn't come yet today. GAH! This waiting is torture. Pure torture.

Whereabouts are you in the US? I'm in the midwest and have no idea when to expect the letter. Also, I don't think any of the posters today received a letter in the mail.

(And I think you are right to say that it's no small amount of money and that "small" SSHRC is a bit of a misnomer.)

  8. Congratulations, everyone!!!

I'm so antsy to get my letter. (I'm in the US and anticipating Saturday or Monday)

Okay, I HATE to do this, but for those of you who heard via mail, was it a thick or thin envelope?

Also, let's stop calling it a "small" SSHRC. It's a LOT of money, especially if you are in the US and have your tuition covered.

  9. I'm in the US too and I wouldn't be surprised if they did arrive by the end of the week or Monday if they get sent out today or tomorrow (especially considering the postal service works on Saturdays here). I'm often quite shocked at how quickly things arrive in and from Canada.

Guys, I have two 20 page papers due Monday and Tuesday, a whole bunch of undergrad grading AND I leave for a 4-day trip to Chicago next Friday. SSHRC better get here before then! I need to make decisions about my apartment this summer and living arrangements for the fall, ALL of which depend on SSHRC.

  10. Does the school distribute the payments if you are in the US? Seems weird to me.

Ah, that makes sense! The people you should really be asking are the awards workers at your faculty of graduate studies. You don't get a paycheck directly from SSHRC. They give the money to your school, who then doles it out. Different schools have different set ups. My MA school paid you bi-weekly, while my PhD school pays monthly.

If you win a PhD SSHRC, it will support you up to the end of your fourth year of study, so you might want to set your start date to make it last right up to that date.

Forgive me if the following is obvious, but it sounds like it might be helpful. It helps not to think of SSHRC as a set amount, but as a promise of financial support for a set period of time. SSHRC supports graduate students up through the 24th month of their MA program (to a max of one year of funding) and through the 48th month of their PhD programs (to a max of three years of funding for the 'big' SSHRC ($35,000/year) and four years for the 'small' SSHRC ($20,000/year). So you can get big SSHRC for years 1-3 or years 2-4, and you can get small SSHRC for years 1-4, 2-4, 3-4, or just 4. The amount goes down with each passing year, since the yearly payout remains the same, but you're not eligible for as many years of support. So if you won small SSHRC for year one you'd receive a total of $80,000, and if you won a small SSHRC for year four you'd receive a total of $20,000.

Ok, so the timing thing. For example, I'm in my first year now, and would be picking up a PhD SSHRC for my second year if I won. Again, SSHRC supports PhD students up through the 48th month of their PhD programs-- in my case, with my Sept 2009 start, that's August 2013. The trick is to match the date at which you're no longer eligible with the date at which your SSHRC runs out. Now, if I hypothetically started getting payments in May 2010, then I would run out of SSHRC in April 2013. But if I start getting payments in September 2010, then my SSHRC doesn't run out until August 2013. Since I have good funding for this summer, I could hypothetically gain an extra summer's worth of funding by timing my SSHRC out properly (I'd have to give up this summer's funding if I started on SSHRC). Since a lot of scholarships and other funding opportunities are only available up through your 48th month, when we're all *supposed* to finish, it's smart to max out what you're making in those first four years and make sure you're covered right up til the end of them. Of course, my program has an average completion time of 5.5 years, but funding gets scarce for 5th and 6th year students.

    Hope this is helpful.

  11. Is it possible to get a studio/efficiency or 1 bedroom for $600 or under? Also - I heard that the Northeast was cheap but based on Craig's List it seems more expensive than Uptown. Is Craig's List not the best for apartment hunting in Minneapolis?

Also - when would be a good time to look for apartments for August 1st? Should I come in late June/early July? Will a 3 day visit be enough time to secure a place?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. for the people in pittsburgh or familiar with it: is getting a one-bedroom apartment in a decent area possible for under $600?

i should add that i don't necessarily care about being super close to campus (30 minute walk or bike ride is okay by me) but i do care about being in a neighborhood with a decent cafe, grocery stores/markets, interesting types of buildings/houses to live in, a sense of community. i'm from a major city that has lots of little neighborhoods and i'd like something similar.

  13. Yes, Tropes. Lots and LOTS of crime. Also, terrible weather. Basically a miserable place to be. You should probably just turn down that offer now. :D

ha, ha, ha. i think we know each other from another frequented site....;)
