  1. Oh, and just call the room where you do any prospectus, thesis, dissertation defense--the room of requirement.
  2. I've actually thought a lot about this., so here it goes graduate applicant community. If we were to look for all the parallels of the Harry Potter world with the PhD application process, there's a few arguments I'd like to make. First, I think the sorcerer's stone should definitely be hidden in New England somewhere. I first thought that Stony Brook would be a fitting university, hence stone and everything, but I wanted somewhere more prestigious. Maybe some scandal where some goons from Princeton or Yale pansies took it from there and kept it locked away with some three-headed dog hiding it. I can see some of the Ivy League schools paralleling the house of Slytherin and pulling some Quidditch stunt like that. Second, I think that if I were to be accepted at Rice University, I should receive said notification via Owl. Their school mascot gives them a leg up in this category. Third, I thought about which professors resemble Hogwart's faculty. I would go out on a limb here and say that Hagrid probably has the best parallel in Chris Ellison at UT-San Antonio. Both very nice and helpful, but also both thickly bearded. I also see Mark Regnerus at UT-Austin as a kind of young Severus Snape. Just sayin. As for Dumbledore, perhaps Bob Wuthnow at Princeton? Both of them are semi-retirement age and vastly superior to all who stand in their way. I wonder who would be a good parallel for "he-who-shall-not-be-named"? I mean really, who is the ultimate evil-doer out there in Sociology PhD-dom? Can someone help me find a supervillain out there fitting of this title? Surely there's some wicked secretary, or screw-you-out-of-life faculty member out there who when they are not publishing, teaching, and making their grad students lives miserable, are hell bent on destroying the universe as well. Your advanced statistics class=arithmancy. Seriously, look it up. D.A.D.A (that's, defense against the dark arts for all you muggles out there) probably parallels any Professionalization Seminar. Think about it. So, to answer your question Lizzla, I think the sorcerer's stone is probably kept safe somewhere for a reason. DONT go looking for it, seriously. I can definitively say that Wisconsin does not have it though. I look at them as the stupid all boys school with that one guy who disrespected Hermione at the Christmas ball. Any other Harry Potter-Sociology PhD parallels out there? -I am Happy to be here, and I really am.
  3. I once knew a man who was waitlisted at his top choice school. It drove him to...insanity. Think of Harry Potter and the mirror thing. "Best to leave it alone, Harry, and don't go looking for it." But seriously, for mental health's sake, I would look at a waitlisted status as a rejection. (If it turns out as a late acceptance, then hey, that's cool). That way, you're never disappointed. I've seen many tears shed over the waitlisted status. Like, grown men and everything. I've had to simply leave the room more than once.
  4. I've been trying to commit more time to my RA work and keep the blinders on. Just get buried in the other work you have going on, and do your best to forget about it. I've also really been limiting my time I spend on this frakking website. It's just not healthy to be on here, ever, really.
  5. No Notre Dame invite here either. I think sometime this week I'll walk up to some kid eating ice cream, smash it into his face, and say, "You will remember me forever."
  6. Just got my rejection from Wisconsin-Madison today. To this I say, "I didn't want to live in the cold for five years anyway." It was kind of a long shot for me, so I'm not too upset. Badgers are a stupid mascot anyway. Sorry for the double post.
  7. That's right, you've reached the right place. You've applied to schools heading after that Sociology grad degree, and hey, maybe you've even gotten into some, but here is where it all comes out. Welcome to the thread where you say something like: "I just got rejected from X university." Follow it up by some kind of snotty remark such as, "Their loss, those jerks." Double bonus for the, "This was my dream school! I'm devastated!" So there.
  8. I just got an email saying I was a finalist for admission to Rice. They're doing interviews in late February and flying people out to Houston. (This is a great opportunity, but nerve-racking too, interviews are always tough.) Not sure about what it means in terms of who is accepted and rejected. In fact, it's not even a true "acceptance" per se, just a notification as a finalist for acceptance.
  9. Anyone claiming the Duke admission that was just posted?
  10. They're one of the better sociology of religion programs out there.
  11. Keep this thought in mind, rejections are going to happen to everyone. I will get them, others will get them. It's just a part of the game. No matter what credentials that an applicant brings in, there's always something to give pause and bring a reason to reject. Try not to take it personally--it's all just a crapshoot. Remember that it only takes one school to accept you for you to be able to move on to grad school.
  12. Exactly! Aaaa! I hate that crap. And any kind of email filtering would just asking for trouble too. I hate everyone.
  13. I agree with barilcious on that last post. Hang in there! It's still so early, I think that universities are only going through the very beginning of their admits. Welcome to the waiting game, it's beginning to get serious.
  14. I've got a book review forthcoming, which is not a real research publication. Other than that, just paper presentations.
  15. Boo-yah! Way to go barilcious! I knew that UT-Austin did their offers a little earlier than others, but I had no idea it was THIS early. That's awesome! So glad that a "familiar" name on here got into somewhere nice. I think this will make the rest of the process go much smoother for you. If the worst happens and there's no other admissions (which I would doubt for you) then you can rest easy knowing you've got at least one (and it sounds like two!) in hand. Awesome news--it gets me excited, and helps me remember why I'm going through this crazy process too!
  16. Dear Duke Sociology, About every week I get an email from you that reads in the subject line "Duke Graduate School Enrollment Services" or something wildly important sounding. You tell me that you've received my transcripts, my GRE scores, my letters of recommendation, other documents, and that you're still processing my application. Why do you do this? I think it is "just to be sure" or something like that. Hey, I'm fine with receiving an email saying, "We got all the crap you sent, so hang tight, because we're deciding whether or not to accept your sorry ass." But when you send this same email on a regular basis it makes me nervous. REALLY nervous. Every time I open my email and I see this one with its subject line staring back at me, my heart races, I get anxious, and then I find out the same thing you told me last week. Just go ahead and give me your rejection and stop teasing me with these emails. (seriously, 5-6 received already, I mean, WTF?) I hate you already and would rather be ambushed with a rejection during the appropriate freak out times (late Jan-mid Feb) than to get these every week. I swear, some office ass-clown thought this would make the applicants more comfortable, and the email probably would if received ONCE. Not weekly ever since mid December. Seriously, guys? Seriously? Just slap me in face, pull down my pants, and push me over into the mud already. Signed, Happy to be here, a 2011 Duke Sociology applicant. Thoughts?
  17. For some reason yoga is big at my school. Lots of other students are into it and I've never even bothered.
  18. Hey ZoeWeber, there's a book out there called "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" which you might like. It's basically what the title suggests-the same story, but with zombies. The illustrations are pretty spectacular.
  19. A little bit of a comedy, war, and sports emphasis... 1. Braveheart 2. Rudy 3. The Matrix 4. Hoosiers 5. Last of the Mohicans 6. Bewitched 7. Dan in Real Life 8. U-571 9. Tommy Boy 10. The Goonies
  20. My advisor has his phd in criminology and i'm in a sociology program. Perhaps this is a rare exception? There's also a professor in my department with a phd in LPO (Education Leadership, Policy, and Organizations) who specializes in sociology of education.
  21. Excellent post, thanks for listing out the chronology like that, myrrh. The only addition I have is that I believe last year, Notre Dame sent out their first admissions in the first week of February. I'll be curious to see where Rice falls in the order.
  22. So, I'm pretty sure there are lots applying to Notre Dame this year, and I thought I would kick off a thread on this school in particular. I'm guessing a lot of sociology of religion applicants are out there? Please share your thoughts and experiences. A random thing happened with my application to Notre Dame. I attended several different schools during undergrad, and hence had more than one undergrad transcript that I sent their way. One of them--just one--was marked "unofficial" while the others were official transcripts (all of them were official transcript requests, though). I emailed the people there, and they said having an unofficial transcript was fine and, if accepted, then I would be asked to send an official one then. I let it go, and then a few days later, I looked at it again and the transcript changed to being "official." So, no big deal really, I'm guessing just an office error which was corrected---but I thought I would share this in case others see something like that for their application. Here's hoping for a Notre Dame admission. I'm leaning toward them as my top school, but trying not to get over-hyped. Hope the Notre Dame applications go well for everyone, regardless the result.
  23. Yeah, I find myself checking this forum 2-3X a day but with very little going on. It's spooky quiet. I guess I check this forum a little OCD-ish but I don't post every time I'm on. But seriously, barilcious, comparing this year to last year's postings is just bizarre--I do think there was WAY more conversation happening then. I don't know if it has to do with less people applying, I really have no idea what the reason might be. Sheesh, when I check what's happening in sociology and find nothing new, I find myself thinking, "Okay, results from applications are going to start coming in within the next THREE WEEKS or so. What is going on here? Where's the discussion?" I'm going to try to be a bit more vocal and then maybe others will join in, perhaps we're lacking a catalyst.
  24. Agreed, there will be some sense of establishing "tradition" which would be an interesting process to be a part of. I think for a department to come together enough to kick off a new phd program says a lot about the challenges the faculty are willing to deal with. It would be a fun experience to go there. One random thing about Rice. It says on their website that there will be an accepted student visitation get together on Feb 24-25. YET, they also say "Rice will send a notification of acceptance no later than April 1." Soooo, perhaps they mean to send out there stuff in early Feb so as to give at least a couple weeks to plan a trip?
