I just released my interview spot at Nova. No funding just won't work for me. I hope someone else gets some good news soon! -

Honestly I assumed rejection from Kent State; are they still sending interview invites? -

Did anyone else get an email from Wisconsin Milwaukee that said there was an update to their application? I got this email but there was no update to my portal. I'm assuming it's a rejection since I didn't interview, but I thought it was odd. -

Is there a reason why all programs don't just immediately reject those who they know they won't interview or waitlist? Why wait until April to send rejections? It would give applicants peace of mind, and would stop programs from getting emails asking about interviews. -

I got my rejection from Arizona State and my application status is still "Under Review". Just letting you guys know to look out for emails, but I hope you're still being considered for interviews! -

Agreed- I also didn't think you were being rude! I think the point we're making is that when to be competitive you need a background that requires years of planning, money, and time, "competition" = disproportionate lack of accessibility. No one necessarily wants the path to be "easier", though framing it that way to me feels slightly elitist, as if the only/best path to achieve one's goals is the current one (and that any alternatives would be less respected somehow). I just think the mentor model is severely outdated given that the needs of the community and the number of people entering the field overwhelmingly outweigh the number of faculty. -

Thank you for your perspective as a faculty member. I really appreciate being able to understand your point of view. However, I do have some questions. What if someone changes their major like yourself? Many R1 schools allow "undecided" or "exploratory" majors for the first two years of attending, as most 18 year olds have no idea what they want to study; what if you switch to psych and then you're beaten out of research positions by students who have been in the program since they were freshmen? What if you couldn't afford tuition at an R1 school? What if you have to work to support yourself and don't have the time to work in a lab? The point being that there are thousands of scenarios that are adjacent to going to an R1 school, doing research for years, and gaining the experience necessary to be "competitive". Reiterating a point another poster made, there are countless applicants willing to give their lives to the field and serve the exponentially increasing mental health needs of the community. The expectation of having years of research or experience creates barriers for (racially, economically, etc.) diverse applicants. I understand your point about funding and finding students who meet your interests, and I think a lot of us are wondering whether this is the best method (i.e. only recruiting students for 10 faculty members' personal needs) of recruiting at all. Lastly, I think it is problematic that if your goals are to be a clinician, you either (i) spend half a decade doing research in a PhD program just because it's funded, or (ii) find yourself in $200k+ in debt (assuming you don't get into 1/5 funded PsyD programs). I realize this is a very black-and-white way of depicting things, but I think it's a clear indicator of the necessary restructuring we need in the field. -

I do see a rejection for ASU now, though it's one person and I, personally have not yet received an email. Seems conveniently timed to this conversation (if the poster sees this and you are telling the truth I'm sorry, I'm suspicious of trolling on the results page). -

Before things on the forum get too hectic I wanted to bring this back around. As a first-time applicant I am extremely disheartened by the way the field handles admissions. Have things only recently gotten this bad, or have they always been this way? Is there anything we could possibly do to address it as a concerned group (e.g. open letter)? -

I really, really hope your comment reaches the people who need to see it most. Thank you for so eloquently wording this. Have things only recently gotten this bad, or have they always been this way? Is there anything we could possibly do to address it as a concerned group (e.g. open letter)? -

Right? I thought I was the only one who thought that (I received this email as well). This is my first time going through the process and as I see people on their second, third, and fourth tries become more discouraged I can't help but feel saddened and slightly angry. This entire process needs to be completely scrapped and reevaluated. People with years and years of experience are rejected because there are only 3-10 spots per school? We can either be in $200k+ debt for the rest of our lives or apply once every year until hopefully we get a shot? The world needs more psychologists, and everyone here has the knowledge, passion, and drive to be one. This process effectively discourages applicants from diverse backgrounds, promotes hyper-competitiveness, and drives away perfectly qualified (and over-qualified) candidates. I hope someone who has any influence has been watching these forums this cycle. I'm out of things to say, and these programs are out of excuses. -

Possibly... I'm hesitant to add to the onslaught of emails I'm sure they've already received. However, I would like to have the peace of mind... Are you the brave soul who wants to email admissions? ?? -

I got the same email. Maybe we were waitlisted? Or maybe people were being dishonest about their interview invites? Either way, I'm glad to have some contact with admissions! -

I just got an email from Georgia State saying they are still reviewing applications as they received an "extraordinary amount this year". Don't lose hope guys! -

Probably so. I would like to see schools just go ahead and post the rejection notice in their portal if all invites have gone out and the waitlist has been solidified. It's just emotionally taxing to wait and hear nothing for months. -

Gotcha! I meant no disrespect- I was just curious. I'm sorry that you even have to deal with moderating either page; you'd expect applicants for extremely competitive programs to be more responsible and respectful. -

Lmaoo exactly. Honestly I'm skeptical that GA State actually gave that person an interview ? I just want them to remove posts that aren't results. It's really annoying when people ask questions there -

To the Mercer poster: when did you apply? I understand that they use a rolling deadline, so I'm just trying to get a feel for their timeline. Thanks!
