  1. He's in the process of transitioning from adjunct to a tenure-track position, so it might be better for us in the long run to stay. He can secure the job, and he can also take care of our pets. Plus, with an academic schedule, he can come for long visits. I'm okay with it. It makes more sense for us in the long-run. Plus, the pets will be with their family. We aren't suction-cupped couple-y either, so we'd both be fine with it. Not that it won't be hard, but it will benefit us both in the long run. Talking about it with you guys, plus with my advisor has my interests piqued. Maybe I just forgot about the application for a while. Imagine that!! Remember when we thought the Oct-Jan wait was FOREVER? Bahahahaha
  2. That was the plan originally, but we went to Hanoi for a conference, and he HATED it,
  3. I hate that the process takes so long. I have been thinking lately that I almost don't want a fulbright. Things are settling nicely here for me. Now, ask me again how I feel at the end of January. It's just difficult for me because I am married, and if I get the FB my husband will not come with me. I know if I get it, it is a wonderful and rare opportunity, and I will need to take it to further my own career. Grrrrr. Anyone else feeling this way?
  4. Yeah, late January. Can you believe we have to wait that long????? My husband is considering applying for the MTVu Fulbright. Has anyone every heard of it or had anyone they know apply for it? It focuses on the role of music in contemporary society. My husband is a cinematographer and editor (with a MFA), but music and the impact of music is an interest of his.
  5. I am now waking up in cold sweat with ideas and way of improving my application....is it January 31st yet?
  6. I also had my interview today. I feel like it went well, but who knows. I had to explain the merits and rationale behind qualitative research, but once I identified its place and purpose, the quantitative people seemed okay. I asked what needed to be improved and there wasn't much feedback...so I guess that's good.
  7. Don't be nervous! Crimson said his experience wasn't too bad, more helpful than scary!
  8. Fulbright Application: Submitted! I have my interview on Monday as well. Whew...after Monday it's 4 months of waiting!
  9. You did do quite a bit of work for the masters; is there any way to salvage what you have and write up a thesis? I am not sure what field you are in, but in my area, recognizing the flaws of a research design or project could be the entire thesis! I say this as someone who started a master's program (finished all the coursework and thesis defense in 2 years), started a new job, then started a second masters program, graduated from second master's program, and then finally making the revisions and submitting/graduated. That's right, I wait 2 years for about 2 hours of work....I was kicking myself after I realized how little I had to do to complete the project. I realize it's a bit more serious that revisions, but it might not be as much work as you think. Is it at all related to what you are studying now? Perhaps you could do an independent study on the topic, to free up some time to re-research the topic.
  10. I am glad it was a productive meeting! So they let you work on your application further? Wow, I did not know that....wonder if it is like that for all schools.
  11. Errrr, so I have not told my parents that there is a possibility that I will be abroad for a year...I don't want to start panic until I am sure. I figure if I make it past the January round I will tell them. My husband knows though, LOL! Have you guys made your application public to family and friends?
  12. How was it? How was it? Give us the dirt!
  13. I don't know much more about the interview part, though some of the people on here may be having their interview soon! I will interview early October. Basically, a panel of professors will look over your application and then talk to you about it. Their notes are passed on with your application. You cannot not pass this interview portion (i.e. you cannot be rejected at this step). However, it's somewhat unclear how heavily the internal interview notes are considered in the next reviewing process.
  14. All of us who have been active on here are US students applying to go abroad. Our application process goes as follow: Internal deadline/interview: sometime in Sept, Official Fulbright application due date: October 20 (?), Accept/reject first round (reviewed by US Fulbright committee, if accepted you are passed on to your individual country's committee): Late January, Final Accept/Reject: March-June. I don't know much about the fulbright for non-US citizens. I have a couple friends who received them, but all I know is that there is a 2 or 3 year residency requirement in your home country after completing your program in the US.
  15. It was created by last year's fulbright applicants on this forum.
  16. Good luck to everyone who has upcoming deadlines!!! Melchoir, can you make a visit in person?
  17. My husband and I dated for a month and then I moved 10 hours away. We did long distance for 2 years, and then moved in together immediately. For us, it worked out wonderfully, he was very busy working on his MFA and I was just beginning my teaching with Teach for America. We were both focused on our professional lives, but had each other to lean on. I think being apart really made us appreciate each other when we were together (in the long-term). One piece of advice, forcing yourselves to talk all the time via phone or chat or whatever when one of you is not up for it will put more stress on the relationship than anything else. It's okay to say, "I don't feel like talking today." Intimacy is not being suction-cupped to the phone. I hope you figure out what is best for you!
  18. In a previous thread, a member asked about teaching tips for her intro psych class she teaches, and it got me thinking about academia and the relative lack of emphasis on good pedagogy. Through reading this forum as well as reading comments on the Chronicle of Higher Education, it seems that a lot of people find teaching secondary to research. Yeah, yeah, being an academic is about doing and sharing research, but I think it should be about passing on knowledge as well. I have been stedfast in my desire to be a professor since my early days of college, though I have flirted with various social science fields before finding my place (psychology, economic geography, and now education). For me, part of the appeal of being a professor was the teaching. I feel I am lucky to be in the area of education, where teaching is a major part of what we do, but for everyone else out there...what are your thoughts on pedagogy and the college classroom?
  19. I have my letters of support in my hand...err saved to my desktop....I now have everything I need!!! Cannot wait to submit this beast!
  20. Welcome!
  21. Perhaps you could look into renting a room or sharing a space with someone. I rented a room while in graduate school from a single dad and his son for 250 a month + utilities....it was so much cheaper than campus housing, and such a nice experience.
  22. My program, PhD in Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies, does not even require the GRE! However, it is quite fitting we wouldn't, as we look at education through a sociocultural lens. It really wouldn't make sense for a program that focuses so much on individual learning experiences to use standardized testing!
  23. Glad to hear it came together and you are enjoying yourself. Based on your post about your schedule, you are going to be one busy momma!
  24. I am working on my PhD out of the College of Education at my university. Since many of COE students are working teachers, the majority of our classes are evening courses. As a full-time student, it is interesting because most of my day is open for reading, writing, and other good stuff. I was curious of what other's schedules are this term. My schedule: 2 online courses (1 with an online meeting time weekly) Tuesday @ 7:00pm Wednesday @ 4:15pm Thursday @ 4:15 I teach a class Also, how many classes do you take as a full-time student; I am especially interested in hearing from doctoral students. I am taking 4 classes, and everyone acts like I am crazy. However, when I was working full-time as a teacher I took 2 classes, so it made sense for me to double my load once I was full-time....
  25. I purchased a couple books on my Kindle last year. It was okay, but I prefer to keep my kindle for leisurely reading. It wasn't as easy to highlight a section or write in notes (though the kindle does have the capabilities, I wasn't ready to invest the time to learn).
