Hey guys! For those who selected they would also like to be considered for the M.A. program along with their application, does anybody know when we're likely to find out more information about this? I'm almost certainly expecting a rejection from this program, but I'd consider doing the M.A. with enough financial aid, since it's possible to complete their M.A. in one year

Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD

Ahh that's scary I wonder what they mean? I never got a rejection or any sort of correspondence from them, even though my application says it's complete online... Wonder if it's worth reaching out to their admissions coordinator? -

Same! I haven't seen anyone post about them. @ggree123 I heard back from Hofstra last week with an interview invite- the first email I got came from the POI, followed by a formal invitation from a current graduate student a couple days ago. It didn't look like a mass email though, so I'm not sure if they're done sending out invites yet. I'm also naively holding onto hope for Rutgers PhD even though we're nearing February and my doubt is growing by the minute ? -

So I have an interview invite from Hofstra, but I didn't realize at the time I applied that their tuition/funding situation does not look great. I'm opposed to PhD programs which do not immediately offer full tuition remission + funding, I didn't even think this existed for fully APA accredited programs. I'll accept the interview invite since it's my only one right now, but does anyone have more insight into this program? I realistically cannot do a PhD program which does not offer full funding... -

While we're on the subject of work backup plans... does anybody have input on research assistant vs clinical research coordinator jobs? My RA position is quite data focused, which has allowed me to bump up my quant skills and I thought this would be an advantage. However, I'm realizing that maybe I'm lacking in the direct patient-facing work in the clinical realm that a CRC job may offer. Would switching to a CRC job from an RA job provide additional qualifications that schools are looking for? I also don't know if it would be bad to switch jobs, since I've heard that longevity in one lab is sometimes seen as better than shorter experiences at more labs. I'm entering my third year in my current lab though, and it's tough that my responsibilities extend over such a wide realm of lower level tasks. I can't focus on writing or independent projects as much as I want. I'm also terrified of burning bridges with my current PIs if I decide to start looking for other jobs. -

Has anyone heard a PEEP from the Rutgers clinical PhD program? There was 1 post in the results page from the 15th, but looks like the interview invite was directly from a PI. Starting to wonder if the other PIs have sent invites out already... not gonna email the department to ask yet because I don't want to seem impatient, but not knowing is driving me insane ? -

Hey there! I don't have too much consolation to offer- but I just wanted to throw it out there that it seems like we have pretty comparable experience and I really empathize with you (3 years post-grad research experience, 2 pubs with more in the works I've been working nights and weekends to achieve, yadda yadda, and yet no interview offers as of now). Academia can be so insulated, especially during COVID when we can't go out to distract ourselves, so I just wanted to throw it out there that you are not alone and the world is bigger than this! I've had tunnel vision working my ass off to an unhealthy degree for this and it totally sucks when it feels like the our labor isn't being recognized. It blows. Crying in bed with ice cream blows. But I hope you can recognize that it doesn't change that you are a great applicant who made a massive effort by putting yourself out there for the most competitive form of graduate school there is- and that drive + resilience will get you somewhere! There are a few more schools I'm waiting on (1 of which I'm sort of hopeful about), but I'm going to try to spend the next few weeks reminding myself that academia is a very small portion of what is otherwise a meaningful life, and I hope you know that you have a friend out there in cyberspace who understands your struggle -

Yup- another one bites the dust. I guess the amount of posts on here just goes to show that they must have received an insane amount of apps, but that doesn't make it sting any less. Really struggling now that over half my programs have rejected me without an interview- I knew this would be a grueling process but damn it's been getting me down! I'd like to think I'm a competitive applicant, and it sucks that I feel as though I've been burning the candle at both ends in an RA job for years post-undergrad to not even be considered seriously as an applicant... at least we're all in this together ? -

I'm not sure if anybody has posted about this yet, but the FAQ on their website says they will be contacting people in February! Looks like their interview day is in March so there's a while to wait still. -

Thanks, that sounds like what happened for me too! I'm currently literally the only RA in the lab right now, so basically everything ends up falling on me due to poor management. It's definitely a great experience to work at a prestigious place producing a lot of new research, and I feel as though I've learned so much about the research process, but it sucks when I'm doing it for grad school experience and grad schools don't even seem to want me! I'm at the point where if things don't work out, I may start looking for work at other labs. Looks like it may be time for a switch -

Has anyone else found that their work motivation has taken a serious plunge during this process? I can't tell if the two are directly connected or not, but since all the anxiety of rejections and waiting to hear back really hit, I've been so much less driven in my RA job. Part of it is I think general WFH exhaustion and because I'm in a lab where I'm constantly overworked, especially the past few months (part of why I'm stressed about alternative options if I'm rejected everywhere- my brain cannot feasibly stand another year at this lab), but the waiting game certainly does not make dealing with that any easier ? -

Lmao I think clinical psych is the only corner of the universe where med school would even be considered as a backup. I'm starting to think about backups myself- I've been in the same full-time RA job for close to 3 years now after undergrad, and I'm in a tight spot where I wouldn't be sure what to do/what additional qualifications would be available to me in this position if I'm faced with all rejections. I would strongly consider an M.A. (I applied to a couple as well as backups), but I haaate how expensive they are- it's why I opted for an RA job in the first place. -

Also just adding that CUDCP says February 15 is the clinical PsyD interview date! I'm not sure if they are holding the PhD and Psyd interviews on the same day- the timeline doesn't specify. As far as I know, no one has heard back yet so let's remain hopeful- the Rutgers PhD is my top choice! -

Thanks, it does definitely help to remind myself that it is NOT personal, but my anxiety still gets to me since I had such a good feeling about this one. There are 6 schools left I have yet to hear back from, so here's hoping! It's a shame that you can look so good on paper, be super experienced and qualified, but still get rejections since this process is really a case of the stars aligning. I get frustrated sometimes when people in my life are like "oh well you have a great resume, you'll get so many offers!" and I understand that they're being supportive and nice, but I wish I could explain that that's not how it works for clinical psych. Sometimes I think we're all masochists for choosing this field lol -

Does anyone have any tips for coping after receiving rejections? I had a first-round preliminary interview this week that I thought went really well and was (in my eyes) a perfect research match. I was super excited to hear back from the professor, but I just got a rejection in my email with the standard "it was an especially competitive year". It's making me super nervous because now I have 3 rejections (2 assumed) and 0 interview prospects, and if I couldn't land an interview at a place that seemed like the ideal match, I'm just really getting down about my chances at the rest of the schools and what I potentially did wrong in the preliminary interview. Is anyone dealing with a similar thing? -

Totally relate, I didn't anticipate my anxiety to get about 1000x worse after all my applications were submitted. I think the waiting combined with feeling like I'm just sitting on my hands makes things really hard since it's out of our control at that point. Narrowed possibilities means less hypotheticals for my brain to get caught up in. -

To be honest sometimes I wonder about people posting stuff just to show off, but I'm not sure if I'm just projecting my own application insecurities. I think we all just need to focus on ourselves and putting our best foot forward, and less on the competition! We're all (hopefully) just trying to make the world a better place and it's a shame that this environment can get a bit toxic, but I guess as is the case for all online forums ? -

I received an email from a POI with a link to schedule a preliminary interview, however there is a message that the calendar the POI sent is unavailable. Should I wait, or is it fine for me to send an email thanking her, say I'm really excited but that the link to schedule isn't working? I feel like I'm overthinking it and it's fine but it feels strange to say that haha
