Biology and Bioengineering@Caltech 2021 Fall
PapaSeanL replied to PapaSeanL's topic in Waiting it Out
Hi! The virtual visit days are on Feb 25th and 26th! I think they have sent out all of their invites awhile ago. Sorry about that. This year is a weird year lol, for me getting interviews are hits and misses. Good luck! -

Lol but who knows wtf is going on this year. Maybe they haven’t stopped sending out the invites since I got it at Christmas Eve. My interviews invites are hit and miss as well lol. -
Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering Fall 2021 Admission Results
PapaSeanL replied to Bioenglover's topic in Engineering
Thanks! I don't recall having to select a subfield for caltech. But in general I'm interested in tissue engineering, nano/micro-tech, and single cell/molecule biophysics. I'm pretty sure I am on the very bottom of their list lol. Hopefully the interview will go smoothly! Good luck! -

Thanks! For sure. I just realized how BE/BME heavy my applications are... -
2021 International Biomedical Applicants

International application with US undergrad. BS in aerospace engineering. 4 papers published (3th/4th author in three of them and 2nd in a biorxiv preprint that is under review at a IF ~25 journal). 1 summer intern at automobile company, manager wrote me a strong letter. (I the time I thought I would be a car engineering). 13 months of undergrad research (30 hr a week average and full time in one summer). Apparently very strong rec from PI. Three papers from this. 17 months full time research after graduation at a Harvard lab. Inherited 1 project and was the experimental lead (2nd author preprint, and 1st author in prep). currently leading two projects (will be sole 1st author in one and co 1st author in the other). I'm applying to both engineering and biology/biophysics programs. Caltech BE (talked to an applied physics prof before applying but he is not on admission committee of BE) Stanford BE Harvard SSQBio/BBS/BE (No interview from BBS I guess that is a rejection) MIT BE/Biology/Media lab (got one interview from one of my POI at Media Lab) Princeton MAE (invited for short interview) Berkeley Biophysics (Talked to a prof on admission committee and he likes me, no interview) UChicago PME Yale BE CMU BME Gatech BE USC BME -
I guess I'll start lol. Applying to mostly biophysics/bioengineering programs but I have also applied to Princeton MAE. Recently got invites from POI for a 15 minutes interview. I guess they have already screened for the qualified candidates and according to the email they are trying to make sure my interests align with theirs before making a decision. My friend applied two years ago to princeton MAE and got accepted with interview. But due to covid I think schools have more limited positions so interviews are usually required.

I had the chance to talk with one of my POIs before applying. He/She said most people send out interview invites in early-mid Jan. This is the normal timeline for more sciencey labs.

Hey Congrats!!

Probably just for this year. My PI said endowment is normal so not sure why they decided to hire less people. I think BBS historically admit ~100 students so this year it would probably be 80. Hopefully we can see each other at the interview!!!!

Decided to share my stats and schools after quite a bit of lurking lol. International application with US undergrad. BS in aerospace engineering. 4 papers published (3th/4th author in three of them and 2nd in a biorxiv preprint that is under review at a IF ~25 journal). 1 summer intern at automobile company, manager wrote me a strong letter. (was still doing engineering stuff there). Caltech BE (talked to an applied physics prof before applying but he is not on admission committee of BE) Stanford BE Harvard SSQBio/BBS/BE MIT BE/Biology/Media lab (got one interview from one of my POI at Media Lab) Princeton MAE Berkeleu Biophysics (Talked to a prof on admission committee and he likes me) UChicago PME Yale BE CMU BME Gatech BE USC BME

True, let's give it some time. Heard from some people Harvard bio science programs (ssqbio, bbs, MCO) are cutting 20% from incoming year and also looking to decrease hiring rate of Harvard research techs/post-bacs. As an international student and a harvard hire I wish I at least have the self-control to not check gradcafe every 10 minutes lol

Someone on the result page received interview today lol. I'm screwed lol.
