  1. Anybody have any insight for University of New Mexico or University of Vermont? Right now, those are my top 2 choices for the MA.
  2. If there is a section in which I can fill in information, I do. There is no harm in filling it out, but there could possibly be harm in not filling it out. Better safe than sorry, in my opinion.
  3. Question: One of my letter writers is no longer in academia and instead works as an administrator in a museum. Any insight as to whether universities look at this in a negative light?
  4. Thank you for the recommendation. Will take a look at this program...
  5. Where is everyone applying this year? I'm in post-1945 British history and my top two choices are University of Vermont and University of New Mexico, both M.A. programs.
  6. Good luck! You will do excellently. It never hurts to read up on the professor and have some general knowledge about their work. Overall, just try to have a stimulating, genuine conversation.
  7. I'll defer to experienced posters on the forum, but in my experience communicating with professors, one has specifically asked that I notify him upon my application.
  8. I am about in the same place. Potential advisors locked down, now SOP writing. We have this!
  9. Hey everybody! October check in. Where are you applying? How are you application materials progressing?
  10. Hi all, hope you are well. I have been considering applying for the MA in either Literature or in History, but don't know which program is more appropriate. I am hoping to study British genre fiction of the 1960s, primarily espionage fiction and how this relates to national identity and the Cold War. My first thought was to expand on "literature" and instead study popular culture on a broader scope to research for a History MA. However, post-1945 British historians are hard to come by in America, and I thought that I could possibly pursue a similar project, but through a Literature MA. Thoughts? My undergrad major was English Lit and I have an established history of literature and/or writing-based extracurricular activity.
  11. Mid-summer check roll call! How is everyone doing? What step of the application process are you working on? Have you narrowed down a list of schools? Hope you all are doing well!
  12. Apologies for this incredibly late reply... it went really well, thank you for asking. Have you reached out to anyone yet? I've heard August/September is a good time to reach out, but like I said, I reached out in the last few weeks to a handful of professors who were all quite receptive.
  13. Thank you! I've emailed 5 POIs, have heard back from all except one (and I will wait to follow up until the autumn).
  14. I know it is a bit earlier to be contacting potential advisors, but has anyone else sent out some introductory emails? I sent out a handful and had my first zoom call with a potential advisor today. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but overall ended in a great conversation.
  15. Thank you very much! I'm actually traveling to Santa Cruz this summer, I'll have to see if I can possibly arrange a chat when I'm there. Thanks for the heads up for UCSC. I may apply anyway... I'm okay with applying to the PhD for a couple of programs if the fit is strong. Thank you again, solid advice as always.
  16. Thank you very much, I appreciate it! Are you currently in the program? If so, are you a Canadian student or international?
  17. Looking for some school recommendations for an MA, must have funding as a possibility. I am primarily interested in studying post-1945 UK, viewing national identity in popular culture through a gender and race critical lens. For example, some of my undergraduate work analyzed British identity of the 1960s through espionage novels from the time period. So far, I have University of New Mexico, Northeastern University, UC Santa Barbara, and University of Maryland on my list. I unsuccessfully applied to CU Boulder last year (waitlisted and told by POI that there wasn't enough relevant faculty.) I appreciate any advice as my preparation for a full application cycle begins.
  18. Thank you for the advice! I misspoke--I will not be applying again to CU Boulder this fall, but will be applying to a larger list of schools. Do you have any recommendations as to how to make up for the smaller number of history courses on my transcript? I will be completely revising my writing sample this year and will incorporate French sources this cycle. Thank you again.
  19. Hi all, received my rejection (had been waitlisted at CU Boulder, the only place I applied this year.) Feedback from my POI indicated that due to a lack of modern Europeanists (multiple faculty retiring this year) they only accepted one student in my field. The rejection, while still a rejection, was very kind and positive. The other point of feedback he provided indicated that they would have liked to see more history courses on my transcript. I majored in English literature and minored in modern European history. Since I will be applying again in the fall, does anyone have recommendation as to how to improve this portion of my application? I've looked into taking some history courses as a non-degree seeking student, but they can be expensive. I'm looking to apply to 8-10 school this fall while focusing on race and popular culture of post-1945 Europe. If anyone has any recommendations for potential schools to apply to, I would be very grateful.
  20. Has anyone received an acceptance off the waitlist today?
  21. Thank you! Haven't heard yet, but fingers crossed.
  22. Hi all, wondering if it's appropriate to send an inquiry to DGS at this point about my waitlist status. I sent an email to DGS in March when first waitlisted, reaffirming my interest (got a very positive response, he said there was a "distinct possibility" they could make me an offer.) Sent an inquiry 10 days ago, but received no response. Is it appropriate to send an email now with the April 15th deadline looming? Thanks for the advice.
  23. Congrats!! What a wonderful feeling, I'm sure.
  24. I'm on the waitlist at CU Boulder--I've contacted the DGS once and I've been chatting with my potential advisor throughout this period. They said there was a "distinct possibility" that they could make me an offer, so I am crossing my fingers! Have you checked in with DGS or your potential advisor? Good luck!
  25. April 15th is looming... has anyone been accepted off the waitlist to any school?
