I really thought I would have decided by now! I am feeling torn between two programs. One program is a combined counseling/school psych phd and one is a school psych phd. I do feel that at the combined program, I would have the advantage of learning about both counseling and school, however I would need to take prerequisites which would equal more time in school aka more debt (and years of my life..currently 29!) For the combined program, I also would not have to relocate which would save on moving expenses. At the other school, I felt like my research and mentor match were spot on. Also, I think since it is an APA approved program and they offer a year of counseling practicum that I would still have options career-wise. However, I would have to move and into what seems to be a difficult rental market. Hoping to finally decide by Friday. This is much harder than I anticipated!!

Because it’s a combined program you’d definitely have a better experience within both worlds. I would double check on needing to pay additional money on the pre req courses on top of your regular courses. There’s usually not an extra charge for anything over full time credits. I took additional clinical/counseling courses on top of my school psych courses and was not charged extra. I LOVED that and the classes.
you can definitely emphasize your combined program/experiences when seeking a position. I know that you’d also qualify for additional funding opportunities because of the combination. I was able to secure funding from APA because of the additional clinical/counseling courses/experiences. Lastly, I’m older than you, and I have plenty of classmates who are also older lol do not let age be a factor.

Hey! So you should've gotten an email telling you that an admissions decision has been made and to click the link to see it in the admissions portal. This also takes you to where you can either formally accept or decline the offer. I got this email last Wednesday. If you haven't received this, I would email Dr. H.

I second this. Though I know he takes a while to respond lol

    I got waitlisted for Chapman.

Anyone know what my chances are?

It would depend on how many others are on that list. You’re always welcome to ask them. Did you apply/get offers from other programs?

Hi guys, I have declined my offer at Lehigh and Tulane, so good luck to those who are waiting to hear back on the waitlist! I'm still trying to make my decision with three other schools but that is because funding is still being decided. I just wanted to say if you guys are on the waitlist some schools are just trying to figure out their funding for students, which is why people aren't declining offers as soon as they can. Hang tight guys.

    Did Lehigh offer funding?

Lol. They asked "which one of the three unforgivable sins best describe you? ? Something along the lines of that. If I am remembering correctly. It was definitely about sins. I do think it was the unforgivable sins or some sort of sins relating to religion. What was your question?

It was something like, “select one of these characteristics/personalities and that best matches you and tell me why. You have to choose one... “

    I only remember these two.
    Narcissist, Epicaricacy

    i forgot the other one.

Yeah so true. I was worried about this, too. I did get full funding and TA in my admissions letter, so I wasn't sure if once you were in the program there were other ways to secure funding for the next year. Some of the students I spoke said they were able to secure funding all 4 years, but definitely concerning.

Yes, the ones I spoke to said the same thing where they got funding the first year, but not the second. They rotate on who gets funding and that’s one thing they said they wished they’d known. For me, it would suck to have to worry about it each year.

Anyone else on here thinking of attending University of Montana? Would love to connect!

Thought about it... but after talking to a few 1st and 3rd year students, the funding is inconsistent. One year you might get it, another you won’t. Same was said with professors. That was a factor for me :(

Does anyone have any insight to give on group interviews for EdS programs? I have not had a group interview yet and I don't really know what to expect!

Yes. I just helped facilitate one today. It’s more of seeing how well you do and stand out with peers. We want to see how you/if you collaborate with others. If you’re courteous or you dominate the discussions.

I just wanted to ask everyone who interviewed, were any of you asked weird questions by faculty? One school asked me a weird question in my interview that had nothing to do with school psychology and my reaction was like ??

Lol yes. What did they ask you?

For a Masters/PhD program at UMass Boston.
Every other program I’ve looked at (and the two I’ve been offered admission with) requires 4 years of coursework at a minimum the 5th year being an internship.

UMass-Boston is similar to U of Washington in that if you do not have a masters or EdS prior to joining you will have to complete 5 years of coursework and a 6th year internship.

Essentially it would take a year longer at a minimum maybe even longer.

Ahh yea, now I get it. If you could get a program where it’s 4 years of courses that’d be great. I know some programs will let you add or take additional courses to finish faster. For me I took like 1-2 additional clinical courses on top of my 4-5 school psych courses. It was hella stressful lol but I did it...

I had an interview with UMass-Boston today and while the program as a whole seemed nice and the faculty seemed very friendly and collaborative, two things stood out to me that have led to me deciding that I would not want to there.

Posting this here for other applicants deciding about the program and for people browsing this next year.

    1. If you do not have a masters degree the program will be 5 years of coursework and a year of an internship. It really sucks since another school I really liked (U of Washington) has the same model. I don’t understand why these programs would keep us an extra year when every other program is 4+1. Unless you were geographically tied to the area I would stay clear. Doesn’t make sense to spend an extra year in grad school for limited to no gain. It also sucks they did not mention this on their website.

    2. While funding is guaranteed it is only 18k for living in the Boston area. Graduate students mentioned that it would be hard to live without a roommate or multiple roommates.

The biggest reason for me is the extra year in the program. I can’t imagine doing that when I applied to so many programs that would allow me to graduate in 5 years.

    Best of luck to everyone!

    For masters/EdS or PhD?
masters/EdS normally is 3 years... unless you get tricked into doing the program at San Diego State. There’s is like 4 years. Hella insane.

PhD is normally 5-6 years. I’m finishing my 3rd year in my masters/EdS school psych program. Decided I wanted to get a PhD... based on my research on also wanting to become a licensed psychologist, I reviewed requirements etc. And only 3 fields can achieve this

clinical, counseling, and/or school psychology. So if you look up PhD programs within those fields you’ll see that time frame. Is there programs that’s only 4 years including internship out there?

Just got a official email from Dr Collins that I was not accepted into the PhD program at the University of Cincinnati this year.
Sad, but I think that other programs were a much better fit (I’m big on school mental health, social justice and social emotional learning)

Best of luck to others hoping to hear back!

Sorry to hear that. I got that email too ;(

those are my areas of interest too!! Maybe I was too clinical for them. Definitely ABA focused. Ugh ?

Hello! Did anyone apply to any Masters/EdS programs in California and know when we should hear about interviews? I'm specifically wondering about CSULB, CSULA, and CSUMB.

CSULA will have their interview days on February 26 & March 5. I don’t know the other schools.

I’ve had to reschedule 4 interviews (Indiana, Buffalo, U of Cincinnati and Ohio State) because all of them were scheduled on the 22nd and I already was interviewing on that day.

i was able to reschedule all of them and was told by each program that it happens every year and won’t have an impact on decisions.

That’s good to know. Haven’t heard back from seeing if we can reschedule. Must be a pain to do it. How did the reschedules work for you? Is it now a 1:1 on a different date?
