SMFA decisions are out, just got my acceptance!

I really dont know how my interview with SAIC painting went. Only one out of the two faculty members asked me most of the questions while the other seemed either completely uninterested or distracted. It made me really nervous and I had a hard time concentrating on my answers. It seemed they had not even read my statement or seen my work. I did get a few student names to connect with, that’s the only “good” sign I think. Kinda bummed. Still excited to meet some of you in the student mixer later!

Rejection from goldsmiths :’(

Anyone hear from SMFA?

I’ve gotten a few so far too. It can be discouraging but the whole admissions process is quite obscure, and it changes every year! I told myself if I dont get in anywhere this year ill just try again next... lots of people dont get their choices on the first try. The fact that we might get into some places and not others shows that there is something unique in us//our work..i would be worried if I pleased every school!

Sorry forgot to quote! i was contacted by email (they tried to reach me by phone but couldn’t get in touch), my portal was not updated.

Not me! It’s a good sign for you!

Thanks for sharing! I hope we all get through this stage with some funding at the end

WOW! beautiful work! I think the latter part of the prompt is the most important: showing your risk taking and openness to experimentation. Have you worked with other media? Have you explored topics maybe that weren't included in your portfolio? The two paintings attached are very different in content, maybe you can elaborate more about your openness to subject matter Btw i paint in a more realistic fashion and i rarely ever make studies...

wow thats great! I feel social sciences can easily be tied into your practice, and your knowledge would be very helpful to others in your cohort! Conversing with our peers, in critiques for example, is one of the most compelling aspects of an MFA program. With your social science background, you will have a different and valuable perspective. Critical, theoretical and conceptual prowess are highly valued in many programs, even more so than technical proficiency in some (Yale, Goldsmiths) From the sound of it, you'll be just fine! Goodluck!

i studied art history and business.... not completely unrelated but no BFA or studio focused program. I just mentioned how my experience informs where I am now and how it helps me paint. The programs i have interviewed with were actually curious about my background! You got to your decision to follow this career path because of your history, I am sure it informs where you are now and your choice to pursue a fine arts path! What did you study?

Painting for me! I only heard back after many people had already gotten invited. I think different departments have different deadlines

Congratulations and good luck for the Northwestern interview! I've interviewed at SVA and SMFA, rejected from Yale and UCL, waiting for Goldsmiths, UCLA, Columbia and RISD. This is my first time applying and I'd really like to start in the fall

I see, thanks for sharing. The article is very informative– I did not know of all these issues. From their scholarships page it seemed there are many opportunities to cover part or all of the cost for the MFA! The dont say how many students these go to though.. I definitely feel for the students in the article Where else have you applied?

each school has deadlines for FAFSA and most recommend you submit according to that deadline, often before a decision is made about your admission to the program. Schools have a limited amount of financial aid they can give out and if you apply after the deadline they provide you will not be given priority. They may even run out of funding, regardless of your need. Once you've filled out the FAFSA form it becomes quite easy to add the schools (I believe you can add up to 10) I would recommend to apply as soon as possible!

lovely! Did you or did they study painting? Did they like it?
-
Congrats! Goodluck with the interview. Mine is in painting
-
I'm sorry to hear that! What did you study there?
-
You never know what the programs want every year.. theyre building a cohort and requirements change and are unpredictable. Congrats on your yale interview!
-
congrats to yale interviewees!
