    Hi everyone,

I am looking to apply in the next year and I was wondering if research was a necessary component for MSW? I have lots of work and volunteer experience in the field but no research. Do you think that would hinder my chances? Thank you in advance!

If you mean a necessary component for being accepted into programs, no not in my experience. I got into 3 out of 4 programs I applied to with zero research on my resume /in my background. However like the other person said it might depend on the school.

I think every msw program has a required research course, if that’s what you’re asking. You don’t have to do a thesis though.

Thanks for the information! In terms of practicums was it manageable to get the placements you wanted? As someone above had mentioned that there was difficulties with this.

I think what helped in my case was that I knew going into the program which specific orgs/agencies I wanted to do placements with. So I basically told my coordinator “please help me get into this place” which may have been less work on her end? Idk, it worked out well for me tbh but there will always be a variety of experiences

    Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting on here! This forum has provided me with a lot of helpful information. I have seen a lot of discussion about east coast schools but not much about west coast. I recently got into UVIC 2 year MSW and was wondering if anyone knows how the program is/if they enjoyed the program ?

I am also waiting to hear back from U of T and was wondering as someone who wants to come back to the west coast would it be worth it to go to U of T (if I got in)  as my network would be out there and I would have no social work connections when I get back or does it not really matter when it comes to employment? In terms of social connections I would be out there on my own and was wondering if it is easy to connect with the classmates in the program? I have heard that U of T is not a very social school and many people say it is hard to meet other people!

Any input would be great! Thanks so much :)

The advice I have received from social workers who have been in the field much longer than I have has been that doing your msw in the city where you live & are settled in is a very smart career move, in terms of building connections/your network/job opportunities. I turned down an offer from an east coast school to stay in BC as this is where I am for the long haul.

I did my bsw at UVic and had a great experience overall.

Hi everyone! I'm also waiting to hear back from U of T 2 year program but have been accepted to UBC Okanagan and the deadline to accept is April 14th... if closer to that date I still haven't heard back from U of T would I be able to accept UBC, and then later decline if I were to hear back that I was accepted to U of T? U of T is my top choice so if I was accepted, I would choose there instead.

You can definitely change your mind. You’re not locked in at all. I initially accepted the offer to Dal, then got accepted to UBC (Vancouver), and changed my mind. I just emailed Dal saying I changed my decision and would no longer be attending. I just lost my deposit, it was no issue.

May I ask how long they gave you to accept/ decline your UBC offer?

I still haven't heard back and the admissions coordinator told me that "first round" decisions went out in the past two weeks... Which makes me think that the second round may go out after the accept/ decline deadline has passed for those in the first round. And I am super eager to get an idea of when that might be! TIA

For me it was April 2. I know that if a student is offered admission but the school needs additional documents (for example official copies of transcripts), they will give you a longer grace period so you have time to give them whatever they need. I would guess sometime first week of April? Wishing you the very best :)

    Dear All,

I have just signed in to this forum, which seems very informative and useful for the prospective social work applicants. I do not think this is right time to put my story in, as we all have already done with the applications and waiting for the results. Good Luck to all!!!

Since I have gone through the posts and it gave me both solace and worried at some point that how would I get through.

    A bit about my profile:

1- Master in Globalization and International Development from UK ( Merit)

2- Master in Public Administration ( First Div)

3- Almost 10-years of practical work experience in both Not-for-profits and governmental sectors (USAID, Oxfam International+ Govt).

    4- 22000 hrs work experience

5- New comer in Canada as a Permanent Resident

6- Applied to Dal and UofT for MSW ( non-BSW) entry and MA Educational Administration at McGill. and have not heard back anything except from McGill where I am on waitlist.

    What are the chances???

    Regards

I’m not sure why you haven’t heard from Dal yet - I heard from them last month. Maybe there is a certain order in which they notify applicants, ie. Canadian citizens first? You seem like a strong applicant. My understanding of what they are looking for experience wise is directly related to social work/social services. Wishing you all the best :)

Has anyone else applied to UVIC's Advanced Standing MSW program? Anxiously awaiting a decision over here!

Haven’t heard yet. However I am accepting another offer. Best of luck to you! I also did the BSW at UVic and had a great experience at the school.

Interesting, I did not receive the letter in the mail/recommendation, just the official acceptance letter via email. Good luck to you!

So I checked my online status this morning and it says Accepted - Deposit requested :) still waiting for the email though. In the email you received, did they provide you with any information about funding?

Yes, I received my official letter yesterday via email. The application portal has also updated to say accepted (dalonline.dal. ca). What do you mean you were recommended for admission?

I got a letter in the mail from the school of social work in early Feb telling me that I was recommended into the MSW program. It said that the final decision is made by the faculty of graduate studies, and I will receive an email from the registrar if/when my application is approved. I’m still waiting though :s my understanding has always been that when students are recommended for admission it’s virtually certain that they will be accepting. So it’s just a bit confusing that other people are having a different experience...?

Hi everyone! I was accepted into Laurier's MSW (part-time) program beginning in May 2021 and also Dal's MSW program beginning in September 2021. Has anyone attended either school? What did you like, what did you not like? I'm leaning more towards Laurier, but I'd love to hear your feedback. What would you choose if you were me?

Hey, I can’t answer your question but I was recommended for admission to Dal for Sept as well. Have you received official acceptance yet? I’m still waiting to officially hear from the registrar

For those who have already heard back from Dal, have your online application portals been updated at all? Or are you only getting your acceptances/ rejections in the mail? And did you apply to the distance, advanced or 2 year program?

    TIA for any info!

I haven’t checked my application portal in a while so I have no idea what it says, but I didn’t receive an email from them, only letter in the mail. I’m doing distance

    Congrats! :)
If you don't mind me asking- when did you submit your application & what province are you in? I wonder if when you submitted your application and how far you are from NS dictates how early you get the acceptance. I'm in Alberta

I’m in BC & submitted my application in early November
