I didn't apply for this year but am considering applying for next year. While overall I like the program I find their prereqs a little much but we'll see. Even if I were accepted I'd have to take a few classes before beginning the program.

Did all of you recent acceptees to the program have all your prereq courses completed before application or were some of you admitted on the condition that you'd finish them up before the school year starts?

The (un)Official Duke Sanford MPP Thread
understatement700 replied to mppbluedevil's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thanks for the helpful info! Could you also talk about the financial aid situation for most students? On the Sanford website the school makes it appear that they give out a lot in fellowships and/or TA-ships to students so that they're not in crazy debt when they graduate, especially compared to other big public policy and IR masters programs. Is this true? What percentage of students get grants/TA-ships and about how much is the average award (in your estimation)? -
When they accepted you did they mention anything about funding? Also, does anyone know if the MPA/MA-IR program or Maxwell in general give out a lot of money?

The (un)Official Duke Sanford MPP Thread
understatement700 replied to mppbluedevil's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Hey, thanks for starting this thread. I have a few questions. What is your policy track? I believe some people on here have expressed before that Sanford might not be the best for going into the IR field, well I guess Global Policy as it's called. Do you think that this track is strong at Duke? In terms of the students, faculty, connections, etc. Do you think it would make sense to go to Sanford over maybe GW or American which have the DC location of course? Also, I would be interested to know how you enjoy Durham as a city and Duke University in general. Is the MPP class pretty tight socially? I have to ask, do you guys go to basketball games together (or football I guess...haha)? Thanks for taking the time! -
Out of curiosity could you tell us what schools you got into and didn't get in to? Thanks.

IR degree or Language Degree
understatement700 replied to irhopefull2010's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Just curious because I've been looking into the flagship program for the language I want to study but I wasn't sure just how similar the curriculum would be to getting an IR degree, but I must say I am no expert on the program and don't really know how the different language programs differ in this regard. I've thought that spending the two years learning the language would be great and some of the coursework relevant but I always figured that I would probably need some other degree too. But I could be off base on this. Maybe someone else could chime in. -

Is the language program the flagship program by any chance? -

For students doing the Korean studies concentration do you happen to know how much funding they usually get? Does anyone get full tuition? Do most students doing that concentration get some kind of special funding? Also, just to clarify, no matter what your concentration is whether regional or functional, everyone in the M.A. program gets an M.A. in International Relations with a specialization in international economics and then their regional/functional specialization as well, right? I guess I'm asking if the degree officially says M.A. in International Relations on it. Thanks! -
Oh ok thanks! What percentage of the incoming class would you guess took a couple of the prereq courses (especially calc based stats and international econ) after they were admitted? I am really interested in IPS but haven't completed those courses and wouldn't likely be able to until after admitted. I have taken calc and stats in college and gotten "A"s and did well on the math GRE but I'm still uncertain if this will matter much. I know you're not an admissions officer or have a crystal ball but in your opinoin do you think an applicant stands a significantly lower chance of admission if they haven't completed all the prereq courses? I'm also curious what the admit rate is if you happen to have a guestimate. Thanks!
-
Hey, for those accepted to IPS, did you have all of their four class prereqs (micro econ, macro econ, calc based stats, international econ) already completed when you submitted the application? Also, curious about what kind of work experience you had and if you had any research experience (i.e. undergrad thesis). Thanks!

What are the Best Online Economics Courses?
understatement700 replied to carpecc's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I know UC Berkeley extension offers macro and micro econ classes and I've looked into taking them. I'm pretty much in your exact same situation. I'm still not sure who I should take the classes through though. I'd like to know which ones are the least hassle to deal with since I am abroad. -
Is USC's SPPD strong in international security? I know they have a subfield in international development I believe, but I would imagine that if you are primarily interested in security issues a school in DC would offer the best opportunities especially for internships/connections...or maybe a school in another part of the country with a specific subfield in international security/affairs/politics. I took a look at the SPPD website and saw the internships and jobs that people with an MPP from USC get and I can't really seem to find much on what you're interested in. But maybe my perceptions are off...anyone else know anything about USC and international security type issues? I'd be interested to know too.

Online Economics Courses
understatement700 replied to understatement700's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thanks waiting, Actually I had looked into some of UC Berkeley's courses. The only drawback was that they seem to be much more expensive than what a community college class would cost and since I would be essentially teaching myself most of the curriculum I figured that where I did the course through wouldn't matter that much. By the way, if I may ask, what course are you taking right now and do you find the whole start to finish in 6 months at your own pace thing convenient? How about the responsiveness of the professors to your inquiries and also what do you think about the grading? Thanks. -
Online Economics Courses
understatement700 replied to understatement700's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I am currently abroad and will be for about the next year. I have looked into taking a course online through a community college but it would have to be entirely online since I definitely cannot show up for any class and I am also just worried about all the paperwork and proving that I should still be considered a resident for tuition purposes and all that. Did you register in person? Was any of the paperwork complicated? -
I am currently abroad and would like to fulfill the econ requirements for public policy schools by taking micro and macro online. Is there anyone who could recommend a good online program? I know no grad school is going to be that impressed with any particular course that I take online but since it is a prereq I want to get it taken care of (wish I had done it in undergrad) so mostly I'm looking for something that is convenient and relatively inexpensive, since I feel like content is going to be pretty similar anywhere. Thanks for you help!

Stanford Interanational Policy Studies
understatement700 replied to pepper12's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Hi Globalsun, It seems that for the Stanford IPS program the minimum requirements go beyond just macro and micro econ, which is typical for most professional masters program, but also require international econ and calc based stats. I was just wondering, did you complete all these courses before your submitted your application? I'm just wondering if it's possible to take the international econ and calc based stats at a community college or something. Also, since the IPS program seems to be a little less known, at least amongst the people on this board, do you know how much they value work experience vs. academic? Thanks.
