You should definitely try to ask for more, even if you don’t have other offers to use as leverage. They admitted you, which means they want YOU to join their program. Also sometimes schools will offer stipends in exchange for TAing. I don’t know what school this is, but most schools haven’t totally distributed departmental funding yet, so it’s worth a shot and if you’ve been in touch with any of the professors you could try asking them for any fellowships or scholarship opportunities that could help out.
So helpful. Thank you!!

I am wondering if people have thoughts... heard back about financial aid for the program I want to attend and received a package that looks like this:
Tuition (45k/yr) - Covered (need based scholarship)
Living expenses (18k/ur) Unit loan (recommended a federal subsidized loan)
It’s a three-year program which amounts to 54k in debt. It seems like a good scholarship but I am still in debt from undergrad. Are schools ever known to include living expenses in their need-based scholarships, or is this probably the most generous they’ll be? Should I ask for more? I don’t have much leverage...it was the only school I applied to.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Funny you say that, a good friend of mine worked as his assistant for 6 months after college and she hated every single second of it. She says he was incredibly exploitative, inconsiderate, mean and overall a terrible terrible boss. I met him once and he seemed *very* performative, not a very authentic person
Hm. I worked for him organizing his library when I was an undergrad at UChicago. He was great, it was a really positive experience.

has anyone been accepted after a not so good interview?
Yes. My interview for Yale was very awkward, and I was pretty certain I’d sabotaged my case...I had technological issues (and was really nervous and shy). A kind faculty member talked me through fixing a screen share situation for 12 of the 40 minutes, as the other six participants patiently watched. I mumbled through the rest of it, had time to talk about only 1/5 works I’d prepared, and managed to ask them a question they didn’t really understand or know the answer to...I honestly can’t even remember the question. I guess sometimes it’s not about being eloquent and verbose, maybe they just want to see how you are under pressure...and they had their ideas about my work prior to the interview.

Yes, they gave me a little bit of work study. But it’s capped at a couple thousand per year, which is a small dent. No stipend. Before applying I had assumed living expenses were folded into the high tuition ?
