Mine too. 0/5!

Well, Northeastern very much is listed on USNR rankings. Check page five on the website. It's not ranked, because schools that received less than a 2.5 based on their scoring criteria aren't ranked. The New School isn't, or I missed it. It is on there for other programs (e.g. sociology), so I don't think it is a conspiracy against them or anything like that. I wouldn't ever go to New School for History though, because it's absurd to pay for a graduate degree with the current uncertainty of the academic job market. Unless you have external funding, I'd suggest you adopt a similar outlook on that school.

I've heard that programs are sometimes afraid of people who have been in the "real world" for a while, earning a decent salary. It's a big change going from a real-job to academic indentured-servitude. But I think that you could make the case that you've saved up enough to live a little more comfortably than the straight-from-undergrad folks who are living on the stipend alone.

Same thing happened to me. I got Santa Barbara today, too. 0/4 right here. Comforting, but after a particularly strong Chicago winter this year, I think I could have put up with their tan, rich vapidity.

Looks like I won't be a Californian. The website was updated for me today without any other notification. :x

I always go with Professor X by default. Seems like a lot of Sociology professors don't make much of their titles though. Some do, but I feel like most of mine wanted or at least allowed students to address them by their first name. The people who become sociologists seem to often be the "question authority"/"hierarchy sucks" type, so I think that might be why.

I hope you're wrong. I'm a US applicant and still "pending."

Well, if you do go for the "bailout masters," UChicago might be ideal since I belive they get your MA stuff out of the way in the first year. Secondly, if you are thinking of not going to UChicago for family/relationships on the east coast, then UDetroit (is that law school even top 100? Or 200?) sounds like the worst idea I've ever heard. Not to be a dick, just trying to talk some sense into you. I would say go to UChi with an open mind, and leave with the MA if you hate it. But Chicago is a great city (objectively better than Detroit, I might add, since you are thinking of going there) and I think that you'll adjust.

Wow, looks like UCSB sent out a round of rejections and they didn't include me. I thought it was totally coming since synthla got in what seems like forever ago (but which is probably 2 weeks). I wonder if I'm wait-listed or something...

You are awesome.

Likewise, best of luck. I received no contact from Temple today, and my owlnet has no admission decision listed. Something did change the other day, though. I didn't have a "Date Received" listed for my Writing Sample, but now they made the D.R. 2/17/09. Maybe that means they reviewed my app that day... I'm 0/2 so far, if I get rejected from Temple it's going to be difficult to remain positive. I'm hoping that person admitted was contacted by their future advisor and that official admits haven't gone out.
-
How were you notified, e-mail? I didn't see your admit posted in the results area.

Just got a rejection letter from Indiana University. Seems like a generic letter, but it's more polite than UIUC's was. Anyone else get one? Did they also tell you they "judged you to be highly qualified," and that they "feel you might very well be able to earn a doctorate in history and proceed to professional success, but [they] cannot accomodate you here"? I was planning on going to the bar tonight anyway.
-
I nominate you.

That makes me a little more optimistic for NW. I figured since admits heard from future advisors, and I have received no such e-mail, that I had no shot.

I am going to Europe to reconsider my life, because that is what White People Like.

Just a guess to see if we get the same type of spam. Though I really don't get any spam now that I've switched over to Gmail. But my student e-mail address was barraged with spam for ED meds on a daily basis. Not to mention prescription drugs from Mexico (which I assume includes the former, as well).

Is it your field, or no? Because if you are looking for a good introduction, I would suggest reading Richard Pipes A Concise History of the Russian Revolution. I enjoyed it, anyway. Otherwise, I read much of Part 3 of Leszek Kolakowski's Main Currents of Marxism for a seminar paper. Seemed like pretty essential reading for someone in that field. I think all all 3 parts combined are like 1200+ pages though.

"Do you want an erection of steel?"

No joke. When I saw two "accepted via websites," I got really excited and hoped they had put all the decisions up. Now I'm going to be checking all day... :x ...And congrats to the NW and Princeton folks.

Yeah, I've never gotten Snuggie spam. Ever.

I think the only one of those three that even has the possibility of funding you is BU. NYU doesn't have a terminal MA (they have a BA/MA: http://sociology.fas.nyu.edu/object/soc.ba.ma.program). And New School doesn't provide funding. IMO you should have at least tried to apply to a couple PhD programs. You may have aimed too low.

I feel the same way. Even when I was reading stuff this fall before filling out applications, I typically got 1/4 or 1/3 through a history book and would then neglect it for leisure reading. Plus, not having anyone to discuss those books with sucks a lot of the fun out of it.

Right on. I appreciate your taking one for the team and getting the info, especially on UChicago which is relevant for me. I personally would just feel like I'd be irritating them by asking something they probably get asked all the time. I didn't know you didn't ask about your admissions status; that makes me think about your calls a bit differently. And you're right: answering those questions is part of their job. Then again, so is being polite.
