  1. Yeah, hearing about the 8 spots makes me really glad I took them off of my list. On the bright side habu, Chapel Hill is a way bigger program, so maybe your odds are better.
  2. Haha yeah, I don't know. I laughed when I read the term "Sublimated Liquidity Rage." Maybe I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I thought the whole piece was tongue-in-cheek.
  3. Someone better get in somewhere today! These admits need to start rolling out. :x
  4. I would guess that those numbers wouldn't take you out of consideration at Duke, but I think anyone applying exclusively to those two programs needs to be conscious of the fact that they are potentially going to be taking the next year off of school for reasons beyond their control.
  5. Al DiMeola is a-maz-ing. I've been heavy on Sigur Ros, The Blood Brothers, Ray Lamontagne, Ratatat and Girltalk lately.
  6. Yeah right. Shame on everyone else.
  7. I can't believe the third step in your admit fantasy involves rubbing it in your ex-boyfriend's face, via facebook no less. He must have gotten under your skin pretty well.
  8. Speaking of Indiana freak-outs (though I am in History), I just got a phone call where the Caller ID said "Indiana Call." The person asked for Mr. [my last name], and then after I started to think it was an admit-call, they began asking about the car repairs my dad is getting (and the repair shop is in Illinois, so I have no idea why the call was from IN). Bastards.
  9. I don't think Soc programs do interviews, minus the Harvard exception we have on our board.
  10. Haha yeah. I think our coach makes 1.3 mil a year, including endorsements and media stuff. I'm glad too, he's done well.
  11. Definitely. But I am still surprised at some of the people I graduated with who landed jobs at our HS. If THEY got those competitive jobs, I'd hate to see who they turned away...
  12. Maybe it's an honesty test and they want to see if you put the better programs above them :?: Probably not, though.
  13. I'm from a fairly well-to-do suburb of Chicago, and a handful of our teachers made $100k+. But I think they have MA degrees and were with the school for like 20+ years.

You might be right, you might be wrong. But if you are seriously worried about it, don't mention it in your SOP! Why let them hold it against you, when they have no way of proving your intent to teach in a law school after you are done?
  15. Since you are in Chem: Periodic table of the elements t-shirt. I'm certain you own one.
  16. Sending the follow up e-mail is the academia-equivalent of the scene in Swingers when he calls the girl and leaves a message the very same night that he gets her phone number. Don't do it.
  17. I also think UCSB will be the first school I hear from. I also think Virginia will begin contacting people in Feb, but I base this on absolutely nothing. Aside from the Dec 1 deadline, of course.
  18. Yeah, no joke. I thought ad-com work was a job you left at the office for the weekend. P.S. Congrats slothy.
  19. I can't believe 96 of my 146 posts occured last month. Crazy.
  20. OK I am way confused. Is the OP Cumulative 2.92 or 3.5? I thought it was 2.92. But that's the econ GPA?
  21. The OP could be one of those few applicants who gets admitted by the department, but then denied by the graduate school because of something. At many schools, the graduate school won't challenge a department on an offer of admission. But supposedly there are a few schools where the main graduate school is "strong," and the department's have less power. I think I recall Duke being an example of the strong graduate school model. Which kind of sucks, too, for this applicant since I think I receall Duke being strong on race/ethnicity stuff. Anyway. I imagine some department will look past the undergrad GPA.
  22. I considered reading that, but wasn't sure if it was going to be good. I thought it might just be someone trying to cash in on the popularity of Freakonomics. Good stuff so far, then?
