We'd also have to account for the relative cultural permissiveness regarding promiscuity somehow. I swear I saw some tv show or website where they figured out what city's women had wthe highest average number of sexual partners.

Yeah, your selection of schools is quite ambitious. But I've heard plenty of weird stories of people getting rejected from their back-ups and getting into their reach schools, so don't worry too much if you aren't in at Minn.

Found it. Kind of stupid area to put placement for a program of this caliber: you have to scroll through the alumni newsletters. Here's the most recent one (placement is on page 8 ): http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/soc/alumni/update/Wisconsin%20Update%20Fall%202008.pdf The 2007 one has a few more than the 2008 does: http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/soc/alumni/update/wisconsin_update_2007.pdf

Would you attend a visiting weekend if........
misterpat replied to Hopelessly_Neurotic's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Is it ranked substantially lower than your top choice? If both are in the top 20 or 25, I'd say maybe visit since the difference in rankings at the top might not matter as much if one was 7 and one was 37. If the ranking difference is minor, you could probably pick based on which school fits best. Otherwise, if you're pretty sure you aren't going to go, why bother? Not only are you spending money on the trip, but you're losing money for the days you aren't working. You aren't even certainly admitted to this school. I think IvyHope makes some valid points. -
To Whom it May Concern: I have been accepted with funding to a program that is ranked substantially higher than yours. I would like to take this opportunity to say that ya'll cant handle this shit. Please remove my application from consideration, so that some poor sap may have the spot I most assuredly would have been given at your mediocre university. All best, AEC

Bostonians were actually just a bunch of dicks who didn't want to pay a totally reasonable amount of taxes?

Applying to PhD programs with only a minor in the subject?
misterpat replied to dillonr1's topic in Applications
It depends where you want to go, if you have letters from History profs, if you can explain convincingly why History is now your primary interest in your SOP and how good of a writing sample you have. You might have trouble at higher-ranked schools without a major, but I bet it really wouldn't be an issue outside of the top 50. You could still have a shot at schools higher than that if you're a great applicant, but History is a pretty competetive discipline and you're starting off with a (possible) strike against you. I think you just missed all the deadlines for apps this round though. Also, for modern Euro you are going to need languages. I don't know what area you want to focus on, but if you want to look like a solid applicant you should have some knowledge of 2 going in. If you know German or French you are off to a good start. This might help show you are serious without having a major. Edit: Finally, you're going to focus on a specific-type of history, or at least sell yourself as such in your SOP. Perhaps you could play up your English major's relevance by selling yourself as somoene focusing on Cultural History. -
Classmate FORGED letters of rec... What do I do?

A mod should lock this thread. The debate is long over. People are getting upset for no reason. -

For anyone else waiting on UCSB: In an e-mail from the graduate secretary, she said applications are currently being reviewed and that decisions will be available in the first two weeks of february. So, you at least have a solid week where you don't have to check the website.
-
Northwestern posts admission decisions once they are reached in the app. They use the ApplyYourself application.
-
Unless someone has experience with a letter like that, which I admittedly do not, I wouldn't read into that as representative of a decision going either way. It's vague to the tenth power.
-
Also, bubo: You didn't get an e-mail or anything? Just checked on the website?
-
Also, living_in_paradise, I don't know if you researched the weather up there, but you might need to change your username.

You're correct. If you beat out other applicants to get into Madi, there's no way the graduate school isn't going to let you in. Congrats to the OP. This is the second person I've seen today claim they got into Wisc; the other was for History of Medicine. They're on top of their shit up there, apparently.

Columbia School of Journalism Writing Test. How to prepare?
misterpat replied to mart3es's topic in Journalism Forum
Are you joking? -
Man, I wish History was relevant to making weapons for the government so they would have tossed me some grants.

Congrats. Great school. Enjoy all that snow haha

Anyone gotten an early rejection yet? I figure it's too early for an admit, but I'm wondering if any of the first-cut people have found out from any school with like a Dec 1st deadline. I've been checking some of those websites in fear that I am one of them.

Columbia School of Journalism Writing Test. How to prepare?

Sounds like a good idea. If you're going to be quizzed on current events, you probably need some historical context. But then again, how much history could you really cram in before you take the test? Your time might be better spent reading random New York Times articles from the past year. -

Your english is very good. Now that you point it out, there are minor things that hint at it. "Mails" is kind of a hint, but I honestly didn't suspect you weren't a native English speaker until you said something. Anyway, some people disagree with me on the contacting professors issue. Might want to read their advice too, I think there is a link to that thread posted above. But I wouldn't worry about it too much; if you get into a better University, a Professor will understand that you are just trying to do what's best for your future. Especially since you should only contact them with one or two e-mails. Anymore than that and you might be pestering them. They get a LOT of e-mail, and if you keep asking inane questions just for the sake of corresponding with them, it's going to do you more harm than good.
