Courses you can teach with an American Studies PhD??
misterpat replied to dillonr1's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
I think most universities want to kind of pigeon-hole you. I couldn't tell you, but I think that if you became a publishing-machine in both fields, you might increase your chances at teaching both English and History. -
First of all, websites are often wrong. My UCSB one says one of my letters is missing, and my letter is there. Other people here will tell you, they sometimes stop updating those after a certain point in the process. Secondly, your GREs should get you past the initial stage at many schools. I am surprised, though, that your 630 is 96th percentile, since my 680 was also 96th percentile. Finally, if they have started reviewing appliations (and odds are that they have), you probably aren't going to be able to include that letter in your application.

Ouch. I read some of EFRL and the translation wasnt as bad as when I read Suicide. Something was particularly unbearable about reading Suicide that it made me want to do it myself.

This game is so weird. I cannot figure it out. But I am filled with an inexplicable desire to become good at it. I think it may be the music.

Bob Freeland officially hates you now.

They're secret agents sent on a misson by the department to determine if you lack social skills.

Inspired by the television thread. If you can stop worrying long enough to read, what are you currently reading? For me: Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy Consider the Lobster - David Foster Wallace

Finalist to interview for Doctoral Fellowship
misterpat replied to Robusto's topic in Waiting it Out
If they fund all of their students, then if you don't get the fellowship maybe it means you aren't admitted. You probably know more about this program than any of us do. Sounds like you're pretty close to being admitted. You really varied your programs a bit, eh? -
Anyone else regretting not applying to more schools?
misterpat replied to waitingNC's topic in Waiting it Out
I applied to 9 schools. I think I should have done 2 (specific programs) more that were between 30 and 50 for a good balance. But I thought at the time that if I end up going 0/9 on my current list, there's probably something wrong with my app and I'd be just as likely to go 0/11. Better to save the money and dominate next year's cycle when I know what I did wrong OR sell my soul and go to law school (no offense synthla). -

Comfort yourself with the fact that those two schools have notoriously irritating applications to fill out. UMich took forever. My friend who applied to UT said that he'd rather have another catheter put in than apply there again. -
I think the only one I've seen him fail was when the tried to eat the 8 breakfast burritos or whatever they were. I can't believe someone actually did that before.

Don't worry to much about it. They aren't going to un-admit you.

Maybe you'll realize that the others research is something you're into once you're there. If the program is well-regarded, as you say it is, I imagine someone else has to be doing something of interest to you (or is at least capable of handling stuff you are interested in). Personally, I would have kept my mouth shut since you did contradict your SOP. But what do I know?
-
It's also tough to tell whether something is weak enough to warrant justifying.
-
I almost wish these schools didn't have status check websites so I wouldn't check them 2 or 3 times a day.
-
Ha. You'd think from this statement that half of academia is being let go. Sure, checking if Professors are still going to be there next year is a great idea. But out of the dozens and dozens of professors that I e-mailed over the last year, all of two were leaving (and to go to a better position, not because of lay-offs).

Hahaha yes indeed. But when I was browsing faculty profiles, it seems like a lot of legal history scholars got a JD before they went for the PhD. And UCSB has Laura Kalman, so I figured you might be doing Recent US Legal.
-
Haha no soup for you kind of sounds like the translation, based on the messages others posters are putting up. On the bright side, if you got into Wisconsin, chances are it won't be the only program you are admitted to.
-
I am sure he will fix it after he cures cancer and resolves the Israel-Palestine conflict.
-
I feel like you have a leg up on me with your legal background in the UCSB game. I do hope you applied for something that isn't Modern US.
-
Definitely a wise decision. Cross that bridge when you get there.

If you want to feel less neurotic, go browse the forums at http://www.top-law-schools.com "Should I disclose that I got suspended in 7th grade? OMG!"

I frequently read Brooks and Kristol. I disagree with Brooks often, and Kristol the majority of the time. But I fail to see what you find so horrible about this particular piece.
