  1. The catch is that your results come mid-November. BUT who cares? You see your scores when you finish the test, and if you don't like them, you can rewrite it before your official scores are mailed to you.
  2. I want to avoid sounding like an ad, but I thought I'd share some good news (for once?). The GRE is having a sale! It's 50% off if you sign up to take the test between Aug 1st and Sept 31st. You will be given an alternative test, equipped with an on screen calculator, the option of skipping questions and changing previous answers. I really don't see how this is not appealing, so yes...
  3. Do we know what is going on with JHU? Any neurotic guesses?
  4. haha. No worries. I am in the 8th percentile for math. I was told it didn't matter so I didn't even read the questions: I just pressed random buttons. I actually didn't take the GRE seriously at all, which I am totally regretting. I think it may be due to the fact that I'm not American, so the idea of standardized tests doesn't really register with me. If I don't get in anywhere, I will actually study and try again. Anyway, congrats. I had all my hope set on Rutgers. I'm really frustrated because I don't feel like I *fit* any program, but Rutgers was the closest.
  5. We brood too much, think too much. We cope by making our head all spinny.
  6. Oh okay. Yeah, that's what it's like in Canada. phew. I thought the world was collapsing. But there are weird food differences. Our mustard is more yellow. Your ketchup is more sweet.
  7. I am so confused. What is your lemonade like? Is it like Canadian lemonade (lemon juice + sugar) or German Lemonade (sprite)
  8. If you can ever get your hands on Blanche de chambly you should. It's a wheat beer from Montreal. My other favourite beer is Schneider Weisse from Germany. But my favourite cheap beer of choice is Labatt 50.
  9. I totally know what you mean. Everyone seems to be American/Modernists. I haven't seen anything pre-19th century. I'm Renaissance.
  10. Ugh. This is me being angry but grad school shouldn't be something you do because you don't have any other options. It should be something that you feel you *have* to do, like a calling. You've been chosen, with or without your Will. over and out, sad applicant.
  11. Do you mind telling us what other school you were accepted to and what your stats were? I would normally *never* ask this but I'm starting to think stats actually do matter a bit (mine are horrible).
  12. Amaretto and Lemonade (as recommended by my 11th grade religion teacher).
  13. Haha. I find it is very rare when an English professor wants you to "spit back" ideas. But in the rare instance this year that I had one of those professors, I decided to spit back her idea only to say that it was a stupid reading. I thought I was going to fail the assignment, frankly I didn't care, but I ended up getting an A+. Apparently I succeed when I write essays fuelled by my anger and utmost bitchery.
  14. I understand. But I've started gearing *every* paper I write towards my own interests. Even for classes that fall outside the English department. I like to see what I can get away with. Apparently, I can get away with a lot.
  15. Give it a few months. You don't really have to start worrying until August, September anyway. A lot can change! And you can also make a lot of money in the mean time.
  16. I'm sorry to hear that, Skeletonkeys! We private messaged each other earlier this year (I changed my username). I still have 5 schools to hear from, but I'm not planning on leaving academia. The prospect of being able to develop my research interests without the pressure of school for 10 months is really appealing. While I'm okay with the idea of not getting in this season, I will definitely keep trying.
  17. I was going to get my TOEFL teaching certificate and go to Cuba or Argentina to teach English if I didn't get in. But now I think I might try to find something in my hometown instead. I have a tentative position as a research assistant, and if I could somehow find a job where I could get payed for tutoring students how to write academic essays I would be thrilled.
  18. I usually do not pay attention to my phone at all (because no one calls me) but I found myself running desperately to pick it up this evening. Sigh... is was only a friend. She said "you sound disappointed." I WAS!
  19. I was 100% skeptical of gradcafe and thought that it was filled with people who needed to occupy their time better. However, I've since found it almost comforting. It's given me a chance to take in all my "implicit" rejections. And I bet half the people on here aren't as nervous as they seem in print. Sometimes melodrama prevails. Sometimes it's fun to sound ridiculous and bitch to one another. Seeing all the rejections come up on the board makes me realize that it's completely okay to take a year off from school, or to have to apply a second year around. It makes me realize I am not alone. It's hard talking about applications to people who haven't ever done it, because they simply just don't understand how much energy it takes out of you. Gradcafe is filled with people that *do* understand, so it's not so bad.
  20. Does it matter. He'd be all like "ma cherie, let me deconstruct your body" and it would be hot and totally not creepy.
  21. Harpyemma: I like you even more!
  22. WHY DID YOU SAY THIS PAPILLON?! that is okay. I plan on being wasted by 8 p.m. with or without an acceptance. (side note: imagine if they called you when you were getting your drink on a at bar... awkward...)
  23. I'm Canadian! I didn't know Monday is a Holiday.
  24. Apparently they are meeting today for final decisions. I don't imagine they'll also notify in the same day. Perhaps we'll hear from them this weekend, or when Monday rolls around. Fingers crossed.
