  1. SMU's Embrey Human Rights Program is a great resource - you might want to consider SMU's MA in liberal studies, which has a concentration in Human Rights.

Hey all - is anyone else applying to the Courtauld this fall? I remember reading once that they were interested in GRE scores if you have them (I do) but it's not on the application anywhere. Is it smart to include them anyway?
  3. I just looked for this group on Facebook and couldn't find it. Is it searchable?
  4. I think she wrote "WNL" (within normal limits). Not sure if that section is important if everything was normal.
  5. I was looking at the faculty in art history at UC Berkeley and noticed that all of the Modern/Contemporary art professors seem to have retired recently. Does anyone know if there was a search to fill this gap in faculty? Is the website just outdated? Or are the budget woes in the UC system to blame for the lack of modern art historians currently on the faculty?

Wow, thanks for such great, thoughtful replies. I know I need to look more specifically at the program to see if it would be a good fit for my interests and focus, but I was starting to wonder if I should just cross the program off my list and save the time. From your answers, it sounds like I should continue to consider it. I've been lucky to have some very hands-on internship experiences, but not in curatorial, so the experience might help. Although I do want to teach in the long run, I know I want there to be a strong connection between theory and practice in my education. Given the (intended anyway) focus of my work, I think I would be irresponsible to not allow museum practice to inform my examination of theory. I know I'm qualified for the programs I'm looking for, but I also know how competitive they are (as hopelesslypostmodern said), and want to be realistic about the fact there are many factors beyond my control when it comes to PhD acceptances. Thanks again!
  7. Just noticed you replied on your status about the Sox from last summer. We were both at the Oct 3 Sox/Yanks game! Crazy small world! :)

Thanks to everyone for this thread. I had been wondering some of these things myself and it's great to hear answers from different perspectives. I'm planning to apply to PhD programs in the fall, along with one or two MA programs in case none of my PhD applications are successful. Williams is one of the MA programs I'm considering. My career goals are in academia, not in museums, but with an emphasis on museum studies. I guess I'm left with the following two questions: 1. Is applying to Williams as a "back up plan" the wrong mindset to be in? Should I decide beforehand if I really want to compete an MA first or just focus on getting into a PhD program? 2. I've noticed over and over again that a huge strength of the program is the required internship. I'm currently interning at a major NY museum and have several other museum internships under my belt. Does this mean that the internship experience would be essentially redundant, or is there still a benefit to interning as a graduate student?
  9. I don't know if this influences your decision, but you can complete a Fulbright and later go on to research via a Fulbright-Hays grant. Most grad schools will allow you to defer for something like the Fulbright.
  10. Sorry! My backup plan was to ask everyone I knew in the area for their dr.'s info, then call the offices and ask to be squeezed in, explaining the situation. I hope you get an appt!!
  11. I was in your shoes! I have insurance (not sure if you do) which made things easier. I discovered the website ZocDoc, where I was able to find an appointment for later this week and book it OVER THE INTERNET! This is the future, and it is magical. I also live in NYC, which meant there were a gazillion doctors to choose from, so not sure what luck you'd have in your part of the US-- but it's worth a try at least!
  12. Regardless of intention, it was incredibly rude to Crimsonengineer, who has put in hours of work into something that we have all benefited from at no cost to us. I'm embarrassed that someone who is educated well enough to make it as far as a Fulbright finalist would chose to use an offensive, ableist word like "retarded.' I suppose it's just further proof that the anonymity of the internet allows people to show their true colors without fear of consequences. Thanks, Crimson, for all your hard work.
  13. Thanks! I was thinking maybe an urgent care type place... I'm in Queens now (need to update that, oops) but I figure there's got to be *somewhere* in NYC....
  14. Well, I haven't actually seen my letter yet -- apparently it went to my school (I graduated in Dec) but I got someone to read it for me on the phone.... so it looks like I'm going to Poland! But I don't think I'll really believe it until I see the letter... I'm already worried about all the health stuff, though. I don't currently have a primary care doc and there's so much medical stuff to get out of the way. Anyone else in this situation? What's the best thing to do?
  15. makes sense! REALLY wishing I had updated my address now...
  16. Congrats!! What part of the US are you in, out of curiosity? My letter is being sent to Boston, so I'm hoping it won't take too long to get there from NY... (even though I'm in NYC myself, which is really frustrating!!)
  17. It says the action alert is no longer available?
  18. I spoke to an alum from my school who had a full grant to Poland, and she said she'd been an alternate, then offered a place sometime in September when additional funding came through. She did her Fulbright over a decade ago, though, so I have no idea if something like that would still happen.
  19. Just noticed a few of us Poland people are online right now... interested in chatting in the chatroom? I'd love to know who some of the other applicants are, regardless of the eventual outcome for all of us!
  20. Thanks for emailing! I applied to Poland too and have been worrying non-stop. At least now I can enjoy the weekend and wait until next week to freak out...
  21. Hi everyone! I'm procrastinating working on my Fulbright application by reading through this thread. Go figure. I don't have much to add except to say: hello, I'm Lola, and I'm applying for a research Fulbright to Poland. I'm curious, are most people here applying their senior year of undergrad, or already in graduate school?
