  1. Going into round 2 of applications (with a deferred masters in my back pocket!) Hopefully I will stick to my guns and not waste all day poking around the forum, but I do have two questions that I'm hoping somebody can help me with. I informed a Professor, whom I spoke to last year and really clicked with, that I was reapplying and she remembered me and wished me luck. She then reached out a few days later and suggested I submit a paper to an upcoming conference in my field to better my chances of acceptance into a graduate program and offered to help me work on the submission. She is the director of graduate studies at this Ivy institution. I don't want to read anything into this that's not there. Is this something POIs commonly offer? She is giving me great and specific feedback on my abstract and I am so grateful for her offer to help, but I don't want to be taking advantage of it if she was just being polite. This was/is my top choice school and I don't want to mess up this opportunity. I was really happy with my writing sample last time around. I have a backup, but it's not as well developed. If I re-apply certain places, would it look awful to re-submit the same writing sample (with minor improvements)? I guess I can develop my other research further, but it's so difficult to do research now that I don't have institutional access anywhere!
  2. Anyone here attend/know much about UMass-Amherst's MA program? I was accepted to the masters and not the phd and am having a difficult time deciding whether or not to attend.
  3. In an effort to share resources and hopefully contribute to the solution and not the problem, I'm a public school history teacher and former public history museum educator. Should also add that I only have a Bachelors. Happy to discuss those career paths for anyone interested!
  4. Anyone claiming the UMass admit? I'm curious how you heard! My portal still has everything "under review" ?
  5. Congratulations!! Well deserved, I'm sure. Don't let imposter syndrome get in your head!
  6. Well, no better way to come down from the high of your first PhD interview than to get your first PhD rejection of the season. Only need one yes, right? ?
  7. Had a very fun (albeit very intense) interview day at Upenn for HSS. Seems like a great program, keep your fingers crossed that they see me as a good fit!
  8. Do you know if this is the case for their HoS department as well? It seems hit or miss on whether departments follow the same or a whole different timeline.
  9. I've been anxiously email/portal checking since submitting my applications back in December, but now that February is actually approaching I've almost reached an almost zen state of "what happens, happens." Aside from prepping for my one interview I'm trying to remain hands-off.
  10. How's everyone dealing with the wait? So frustrating fun to watch all the STEM acceptances roll in ?
  11. That would be great! Feel free to shoot me a message so you're not putting them on blast ?
  12. Also, asking here again to see if anyone else got a Upenn HSS interview? I just got sent the schedule for the day and it's very confusing, maybe somebody else can make sense of it.
  13. @emeraldsapphireDo you know anything about the History of Science and Medicine Dept at Yale? Admissions-wise, but also anything about the program itself?
  14. Congratulations, how exciting! I wish all schools followed this fast of a timeline ?
  15. Hi friends! I haven’t found anyone else on the history forum for this program so I thought I would ask here. Anyone else get an invite for an interview with UPenn history & sociology of science?
  16. I highly, highly caution going into any interview with the mentality that you’ve already been accepted. Big recipe for disaster IMO - and I highly doubt that’s the case here as well.
  17. I applied to Yale HSHM as well - as far as I know from talking with a PI back in Fall, they don't normally do interviews.
  18. Nope! I'm the UPenn HSS interview I haven't seen anyone else here or on reddit mention that program this year so I've no idea what to expect, but preparing for anything!
  19. Wishful thinking that this is true for my interview as well ?
  20. Just popping in to say I got invited for an interview/visit (virtually) for Penn HSS! Very excited, very nervous. I've been looking through old threads for what to expect, but if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it!
  21. Thank you! I definitely don't intend to sit on my thumbs until February. Thank you for the sound advice and the links to click through, I've certainly got enough to keep me busy.
  22. I've officially submitted and am wiping my hands clean of this process. I feel confident that I put my best materials possible out there. Now all I can do is wait, which is much proving to be much harder than the applications were!
  23. Finalized all my application materials today Now I just have to work up the nerve to hit submit!
  24. Apologies, I should have been more clear. The exact wording is "List only courses taken in your intended field of study and related areas." I'm applying for history of science, focusing on 20th century US. Should I list all history courses, courses pertaining to HoS, or courses pertaining to 20th century US?
  25. Back with another Q - one of my applications asks me to list any and all relevant coursework. Should I list ALL of the history courses I've taken (there's a lot, obviously), or just the ones related to my intended research field?
