I'm right there with you ( I got an interview for painting as well) I'm trying to figure out the logistics of shipping a canvas painting that is 84"x60" This is going to be a nightmare. I barely have enough money to buy a new pair of shoes let alone a plane ticket and $600 shipping costs. I read somewhere that it's 20 minutes to talk about your work and 20 minutes Q&A. No idea what kinds of questions or any details....I do know that there is a 30min installation time prior to the interview. 75 interviews for roughly 22 spots. so 30% get in. Here's to more sleepless nights ahead.

I guess it is 2011, isn't it?

I posted this in another thread, but I'm posting it here for easy searching for next year's applicants. I was notified for a Yale interview in painting 02/04/10.

Thanks Anna! Good luck to you!
I have a selection of work on my website's gallery:

Got the Yale interview for painting!
-
I haven't heard from Tyler yet, I applied for painting as well.
-
Applied to: Yale SAIC Rutgers MICA x2 Tyler Hunter Guess we'll be hearing about interviews in the next couple weeks?
-
it didn't seem like all that many names, in my opinion
-
Got 6 of my 7 done: Tyler MICA - Hoffberger & Mount Royal Yale SAIC Hunter still have Rutgers to complete. I'm feeling pretty good with how everything turned out. A huge relief to be almost done. I can't imagine applying to 10, let alone 16....pure insanity

Even with weeks of work, my application came down to the final seconds. My hands were shaking as I was typing my credit card information. This stuff is for the birds.

took me two weeks of rewording and editing to trim it down to the requested 500. it was insanely difficult, but i'm happy with how it turned out.i kept only the most relevant information in the statement, and i'm using the artwork descriptions to further communicate the rest.

Plan on Applying for my MFA in Painting & Drawing for next year

well john currin and lisa yuskavage came out of yale, but that was in the 80s. Traditional methods are relevant, but the second you put a brush to a canvas, you reference the entire history of painting. You need to know where you fit within that tradition, and whether you work brings anything new to the table or not. -
BOO YAH (sigh of relief)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is no way they want anywhere near 10 pages for a statement. The online application is for all of Temple's graduate programs, not just Tyler. The 32,000 is probably there to cover the programs that rely more on statements. but I'm going to call them after the holidays to get some clarification on that. I'm working on a 3-4k statement for it right now.

no photography friends that can help you out?

statement of purpose is submitted with the online application artist statement is submitted with the rest of the supplemental materials in january....there is a supplement form you download, and paste in your artist statement, i believe you mail in hard copies.

So I'm finishing up everything that's due tomorrow for the UCLA application. I have outlined the things I plan to say in my statement of purpose, but how long should it be? I called the school and a woman told me that there wasn't an expected word count, but to "be reasonable." I'm not entirely sure how to interpret this. I was thinking roughly 300 words since there is a separate artist statement required.

Actually a rundown of UCLA would be great. I haven't had the chance to visit, and I'm applying there on the merits of their student and faculty portfolio...I know very little about the program itself.

The facilities were decent. Most of the studios are shared, although I did see a few private studios with no windows. i'd say approximately 15x15 ft iirc. Same floor as the undergrad students. There is a room that the grad students can use for pieces too large for their studios.
-
All three schools had more than adequate studio space...I felt that the facilities at MICA were the best of the three. Didn't get to meet much faculty, so I don't have too much to report. MICA grad school is a block away from the rest of the undergrad departments, which was nice. VCU and Tyler had both grad and undergrad in the same area. Sorry I realize this isn't terribly helpful. haha.

I started with a list of 20 schools, and have been trying to paring it down to 10. My list at the moment (subject to change): Yale SAIC Columbia MICA Tyler UCLA Hunter VCU I visit VCU, Tyler, and MICA next week, I'll report back with anything I find out. If anyone has information regarding specific painting programs, please add it here. I live in Memphis, and I don't have many opportunities to visit schools.

I'm right there with you. I'm just glad to finally find a resource for useful information regarding grad schools. A man can only look at the USnews rankings so many times.
