  1. This is the problem I have: putting a smiley face at the end of such a post (which you've done numerous times throughout the argument) doesn't make what you're saying any more "civil." What you're saying and how you're saying it has more often than not been snide, rude, and frankly inflammatory. Just because you haven't cursed doesn't mean you're innocent of making "infatile [sic] comments." And you know this. You're doing it on purpose to keep a flame war alive. Mods, please close the thread.
  2. I read this last night, quite drunk, and was like !!!! because he's one of the few people I thought would be a potential supervisor. That sucks though, isn't this the academic equivalent of a professional athlete being released into free agency?
  3. Well, Chicago is funny because from my PS, it doesn't look like a good fit. However, since submitting my app I've really moved toward IR theory, so Chicago actually has quite a few people that could supervise me effectively. Who knows, though. I wouldn't be surprised if I don't get an offer for the "fit" reason.
  4. Not at all. I was just covering my ass in case I had offended you. Solid work, that sign. By the way, I was looking at some of the big name decisions from last year, and it looks like Chicago will be sending out admits next week. Anyone else waiting on them?
  5. Actually I caught the reference, I just call my friends man, son, dude, guys, etc regardless of gender... but apologies if you're not a fan of this. Anyway, congratulations. You're collecting offers like a boss. I wish you the best with the rest.
  6. Damn, aren't you like 3/3 on acceptances so far, man? Where have you been accepted to by now?
  7. No joke, I got rejected from Stanford today, and this was the fb message my father sent me: "Hey .... sorry (actually glad) to hear about Stanford. I'm pulling for Harvard. I hated Stanford when I visited there and it's so far away." Oh, Harvard? Really? Why didn't you mention. I HAD NO IDEA. And yeah, you're right, I'm glad I didn't get into the best African politics program in the country too, for that would have meant you'd have to actually travel to see me. I really have no idea why I even applied.
  8. Sorry, where was that?
  9. Yeah, just got my ding from Stanford.
  10. Yeah, and here's the worst part: My masters is interdisciplinary, so right now I'm working on some really inane stuff for a class that isn't my favorite. Basically, its 2000 words on econometric data. Yuck. I've started watching a lot of movies/TV even though I literally never do during term time. The Daily Show is keeping me sane (even though I have to use my old university's VPN client to view it from abroad), and documentaries are becoming a solid part of my life now.
  11. I am so irritable these days, it's ridiculous. At my worst, I've had to say to people "look, I'm not trying to be rude, but I don't want to snap at you so we probably shouldn't talk for a few hours." But it will all be over alarmingly soon.
  12. Sorry, but I have to ask: your name seems awfully similar to mine, especially since we're in the same subfield... Anyway, I have to say that the waiting is driving me bonkers. I don't know about you guys, but I keep swinging back and forth between "I'm going to get accepted lots of places" to "God I hope just get in somewhere."
  13. Not the official vid, but:
  14. Good to know, but that might be policy to keep the decisions quiet. It's in their interest to not let people know that admits are out, otherwise they get a flurry of frantic emails/calls from the de facto rejects.
  15. Not sure about the Harvard acceptance. I guess it's feasible that a prof did it through private communication, but I was under the impression that they were one school where it was all centralized through GSAS...? Note: I'm a Harvard app and I haven't heard anything. Edit: Whoever added the Duke acceptance on top of the Stanford, congratulations. Should be an interesting choice, depending on your subfield.
  16. I think the best response is really just "Yeah, but who wants to go to University X anyway." For instance, a professor of mine was rejected to Harvard's PhD program way back in the 60s. He went to UWisc-Madison instead, eventually got pretty established in the field, and Harvard offered him a job. He promptly turned it down. About 20 years later, they offered him a position again, this time tenured, and he turned them down again. I still think it's funny because he's always like "look, I have my life here now, and I'm not going to change everything just to go teach there. They had their chance."
  17. Translation: "Man, all these hoes up in my game, wish they'd just back up off a brotha. Let a playa play."

    100,000

I'm annoyed that I missed it. I had been watching it for a few days, went to bed with like 99,896 and woke up with 100,001!
  19. It's an hour long, but check out UC Davis's rendition of Carmina Burana. I'm not a big fan of the bit everyone knows (the first and last 3 minutes), but watch the video from the :47:18 mark to :49:20, "Dies, nox et omnia." The vocal range is ridiculous. Dude's got pipes.
  20. Yeah, I'm not sure why there's a humongous gap between giving out acceptances and rejections. I mean, I can understand a day, but why would a school need a whole week?
  21. Congratulations! (And to you too, Tufnel!)
  22. Keep yield in mind - 8-12 in the class means they accepted 20-25.
  23. That sucks, apologies. Where, if you don't mind sharing?
  24. One hundred percent agree. I'm in the UK as well - Cambridge - and absolutely cannot work between 5pm and 1am... I've had some success getting my work done during this "safe time," as you put it, but hardly. I've resorted to taking naps during the 5-8pm period and then doing work after the West Coast offices close at 1 am.
