  1. getting rejected by uchicago and uc irvine... feeling sad and losing hope for this cycle...
  2. My prediction is that some program will drop GRE indefinitely or permanently, because they believe GRE is not a good measure of academic abilities; while some program only dropped GRE because of COVID related emergencies, and they would resume the GRE requirement once they think we are no longer in a global pandemic crisis.
  3. This sounds so confusing! It's like they have no idea what they are doing.
  4. This is a very helpful reply, but I'm not sure if this person is a sociology applicant lol. Do Georgia Tech and CMU really have a sociology program?
  5. My guess is that they are done with all PhD offers. Those offers routinely come out on Feb 8th and they did this year according to the board. I applied both to the PhD and MA program and got rejected from the PhD and accepted into the MA yesterday. I don't know why they do it in your stated order but I think they are doing so. It's also weird considering many PhD applicants who didn't directly apply to the MA usually still receive an MA offer. By the way, in this video, Jeff Goodwin stated that GRE scores were going to suffer a radical discount or even be discarded at all for this process. Does anyone know anything about that? I watched the video before applying. If I remember correctly he said it is a possibility that they (radically discount or even discard GRE scores), but it is still up to the actual committee to convene and decide. I wonder if this is why it's taking them so long, if this is actually enforced.
  6. If you would like, could you please share with us what you did in between two cycles that you think better prepared you and increased your chances? That is an impressive record.
  7. I'm not an offer holder, but my guess is that 5 of the NYU post are from Steinhardt. The two of those that didn't state so are probably just lazy or not aware of the ambiguities it may cause in the eyes of others. It also makes more sense that there are 5 updates from the same program, with some acceptances and rejections, than 2 from GSAS and 3 from Steinhardt. The fact that GSAS Sociology released results on the same day last year made things extra fishy, but I don't think past history holds that much predictive power (even though it is a crude reference).
  8. I think they are taking longer time than usual this year, and I suspect that they haven't sent out most of the acceptances. I would stay hopeful, even though it is a reach for me. Yeah. This week has been more peaceful than I had imagined. I saw two acceptances from Columbia but then nothing else. Let's see if Friday unveils itself!
  9. This is a subforum for Sociology. Check out the Political Science Forum (https://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/36-political-science-forum/) for polisci.
  10. Hi everyone. I very much appreciate the thoughtful and cilvil discussion that has occurred in the thread! It looks like there's going to be a lot of movement and news in the coming weeks. Let's stay strong and keep going! I've been prepping for an upcoming interview. Wish me luck.
  11. That could be a good thing! They seem to have only sent out some rejections, according to the results board. I received a rejection email too. Wish you all the best to get some good news tomorrow.
  12. I would like to invite people asking about the timelines and interview conventions of a school to refer to the results page (https://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/). Use "advanced search", type the school and program (sociology) into the search box, and see the history and timeline of decision notification.
  13. Hi all, I saw it on the latest results page for UCLA that someone wrote to the grad coordinator and received the response as follows: "Some decisions may be released in January and others will come in February. Our admissions committee meet weekly to make decisions but I cannot tell you the exact timeline. We should be able to notify everyone by mid-February. Good luck." Additionally, I agree that the University ID is probably assigned to all applicants.
  14. Congrats with the interview and good luck! I am seeing several interview invites from the result page from Rice and UChicago. I expect there to be more invites from these schools coming in the following weeks now that the long weekend is over. It can feel anxious to see other people receiving interview invites. I have been, for a last couple of days. If anyone is feeling overwhelmed, friendly reminder that you are welcome to log off this site and give your self a break!
  15. Thanks @Fatkiller for the update. My email from Indiana Bloomington says the admissions committee have received the material and will meet in mid to late Jan to select the new cohort. Your report of NYU sent me to a bit of panic. I submitted my application on Jan 4 and didn't receive email from them. What kind of email is that--a response to your inquiry, or a generic email that is intended for everyone?
  16. @letsgetit21See https://www.reddit.com/r/gradadmissions/. It's predominantly related to sciences and engineering programs though. I don't find it to be very helpful; but I check it from time to time because I crave information?
  17. Are you on Reddit? Lol. I think there's been some interview invites and final decisions for the sciences and engineering programs. But in general PhD programs in the humanities and social sciences would get back to us in late January, February, or March. If by status updates you mean completeness check--then I received a few notice from the graduate schools or departments stating that my application is complete and ready for review.
  18. Thanks to every one who replied! A brief self-introduction: I'm an international student applying to 13 programs in sociology. My research interests are gender and sexuality, ethnographic methods, and health. Would anyone be willing to share the number of programs they are applying to and their research interests?
  19. Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I see application threads created roughly around this time of the year for a new cycle and thought of creating one myself. I'm currently drowning in applications and could use some support. Please feel free to share your background, schools you're applying to, how your application is going, your thoughts and concerns, and perhaps results at a later stage!
