  1. Your feedback is very helpful and much appreciated Marty3. Thank You! And for the rest of you, its not appropriate to make accusations and assumptions about people in these forums. So if you want to shit talk go do it else where. No one has any business making accusations or assumptions about ANYONE in here. Get lost!
  2. I never said that everybody at dais is a problem, nor did i say these issues all occurred at Davis. Davis is one of the best schools about accommodations. However, there is a bad apple in every bunch no matter how good the system. Theres new faculty that dont know the P&P's among other reasons. Some can be so caught up and stressed about funding 9since there job depends on it) that they overlook their responsibilities to provide a room and need reminded. I do not mention any of these in my statements which you know nothing about. Have you read my stuff? NO!!!! Do you know what I focus on? NO!!!! Do you have any business making assumptionns about me? NO!!!! Do you have any right to tell me WHY I got the grades I got? NO!!! I have nearly all A's excluding courses I didnt get accommodations BITCH! HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHY I GOT THE GRADES I DID!!! DID I SAY I DID POORLY? NOOOOOO!!!!! DO YOU HAVE ANY FUCKEN CLUE WHAT I FOCUSED ON? NOOOOO!!!!!! DID I EVER SAY I MENTIONED IT IN THE MANNER THAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING? Do you know anything about what I DID fouc on? NOOOOO!!!! The only thing you got right was that YOU ARE ASSUMING!!! So shut the effin ASSuming up and ONLY SAY WHAT YOU CONCRETELY KNOW AND KEEP YOUR DAMN SPECULATIONS OUT.
  3. Yeah, I try to go to dept chairs in one instance the chair never answers emails from students and even according to others is the type to shove matters under the carpet. In a few other instances I had to change schools 3 times when i was at a community college to complete O-Chem, Physics and Gen-Inorganic Chem and Calc and Bio series due to being told "People with disabilities dont belong in science classes" and then was dropped from the course against my will. There were several other instances at the university level as well. No action ever happens and your time investment to get any outcome requires the time consuming efforts more so than a job that it takes everything away from focusing on academics. The toll it takes is worse than having a parent die -- in the context of "distress level that impacts academics" in a similar fashion I would flat out tell professors if it had to be said "Not providing extended time on this exam is a violation of any students constitutional rights to equal access to education. Are you aware that its against the law?" I explained. Sometimes this set them straight when they didnt take it serious. Other times professors are just ignorant law breakers. Schools have to have the proper "P&P's" Policies and procedures in order to hold people accountable. Unfortunately theses "Procedures" take far longer than the school term and before you know it youre stuck with a grade that has nothing to do woth academic performance. Usually it gets addressed but not in time for an exam or the sorts of permanent damage to the grade. I hadnt thought to have a LOR discuss this topic on how my transcripts do not accurately represent the extent of my ability to do well and succeed in ZXY program. I usually added a short one sentence blurb to that effect. GOOD IDEA! for the LOR to include that in one. I knew about how certain things are better discussed in an LOR by someone else instead of the applicant. I hadn't thought this to be one of those things. I usually focused on how my experiences have helped inspire others (my tutees, as a tutor) to persevere and so they didnt drop out via my perspective which helped them. I tried levereging broader impact with a more elaborate version of this example. Maybe I need to reorganize what goes in the broader impacts and move it to my statement portion. The info covered in the NSF package includes -personal statement, BI related details -broader impact related details -the research proposal itself Maybe I need this info in my BI paragraphs rather than my broader impacts paragraphs What do you think?
  4. Its good to know that simply saying dsability isn't what freaked people out in my apps with NSF or grad programs. I have dyslexia which is very simple and pretty straight forward. However the concept of extra time on exams has lead many course instructors to flat out refuse to provide the test time that im entitled to which lead to lower grades when only half the exam is complete by the time they inappropriately alotted by refusing to give my entitled extended time. These bastards lead to B's instead of A's and C's instead of B's which f%*ked my GPA. Its tough to say that in a statement without sounding bitter. Thanks for the hope. However, how anyone is suppose to write those above details in a pleasant tone -- Quite difficult.
  5. Indeed thats true. I was simply showing that a disabiity can be viewed as either positive or negative and that the matter of a disabiity specifically is a review-by-review basis as to if its viewed as good or bad. In my case I was showing that to be true. thats not without accounting for increasing standards. Of course that cannot be disregarded and there are many reasons to not be funded by NSF, the rising stakes and increased competition being part of that. - I however was only making reference to the mentioning of including the mention od a disability versus excluding it from your statement as components of your overall application package.
  6. My first application round in 2010 for the 2011 year, I was told NO PUBLICATIONS and ALL rejected me. All but one rejected me but it turns out I SHLOUD have rejected them, but discovered too too late what a shitty progrm I ended up in. So no I reapplied to ev I applied for NSF GRFP twice and it really seems to depend on WHO is reviewing your app with NSF. I discussed my learning disability and how i overcame it and provided precise examples where my unique experiences ggave em the tools and empathy to help encourage and inspire others while tutoring science courses to other college students. -The 1st app it was received positively -the 2nd time around they pretty much said "intellectual Merit" was "very poor" for the named category of merit. Of course my transcripts had not changed, my letters of rec were strong and not much different. The primary difference was WHICH REVIEWERS REVIEWED my info. On personal statements to grad studies admission committees I now do not mention it at all. 3 of the programs wouldnt even review my app after reading DISABILITY and refunded (not by my choice) my app fee. The one that accepted me to the masters program I omitted my disability and was later discriminated and told "IF I KNEW YOU HAD A DISABILITY, I WOULD HAVE NEVER LET YOU IN THIS PROGRAM WITH YOUR PROBLEM" (ie required extended time on exams and thats it). Its a harsh vicious cruel evil world! FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT! Often time a disability isnt even accepted as a form of "Under-represented group" Even those programs turn people away in a discriminatory fashion.
  7. My first application round in 2010 for the 2011 year, I was told NO PUBLICATIONS and ALL rejected me. All but one rejected me but it turns out I SHOULD have rejected them, but discovered too too late what a shitty progarm I ended up in. So now, I reapplied to every single school that rejected me WHILE finishing my thesis and discussing my research in my statement and AGAIN REJECTED from 100% of the PhD programs since it was a masters that accepted me the first time. NOW AGAIN they say you have no publications. As a UC Davis undergrad alumni I was still rejected twice from 3 programs and other schools. NOW if you have no publications and can get into a masters program BE SURE TO DO YOUR THESIS AS YOUR OWN PERSONAL PROJECT. As long as the data is YOUR INTELLECTUAL PROPERRTY AND NOT SOMEONE ELSES ...... YOU CAN PUBLISH Now that im 100% rejected, time to hit the conference circuit where publishers are dying to publish your next paper. Poster presentations and networking and SHMOOOOOOOZING MY WAY TO A PhD
  8. I feel I personally have an obligation to respond to your post. As someone with a learning disability I know how draining it can be. When i tell people about my disability people think I cant even speak or comprehend anything they say. However, A LEARNING DISABILITY DOES NOT MEAN INCAPABLE. However the ignorant perception people have about people with learning disabilities is only their own stupidity and ignorance. This ignorance is draining to deal with. A learning disability isn't something you BEAT! It is something you live with your entire life and accept about yourself regardless of what people may think about you. If what you had was reversible then its not quite a learning disability. DO YOU HAVE LIFE LONG impairments to your learning process? Do you still have dyslexia when you read? I'm simply trying to understand what you are up against to best help you. I would even gladly give you my number in a personal message if you want to talk sometime. I'm in a master's program now and almost finished with it. I fear this is the only social media where I do not need to be secretive about my personal fight, my personal tragedy, and what I have done to overcome it and fight the education system for my constitutional right to equal access to education each time that right is violated. YOUR CONCERNS ARE AS FOLLOWS: -I strongly dislike my classes and my major and all my classes You stated you are currently enrolled in a masters program. Are these the classes you dont like? Information technology according to your profile? You may just need some fundamental career counseling completely unrelated to your adverse circumstances. MY ADVICE is speak with your program coordinator and see about taking a "personal temporary leave" from your program. This will give you the opportunity to do some needed soul searching and time for a much needed break after such a draining successful triumph that you have overcome. -Overcoming that learning disability as awesome as it was to do that drained me so much that I feel like I have no energy for classes My disability has previously at times been so draining that i went to school part time because IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN RECOGNIZE WHEN AND HOW TO NOT OVER EXTEND YOURSELF. It happens to a lot of people who try to work full time and go to school full time or any other combination that can be too draining to focus on coursework. IF YOU ARE IN CLASSES NOW TAKE AN INCOMPLETE IF YOU NEED TO. It is easy to erase an "I" on your transcript as long as you make arrangements to complete the work with your instructor. its a temporary place holder on your transcript. It gets replaced with a grade after you complete the work usually with a grace period of 12 months from the date the "I" was entered. -Because of that whole experience with the marines and learning disability caused me to somewhat break down emotionally and cause symptoms of PTSD The PTSD never really goes away and NO CLINICAL DOCTOR HAS THE EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND IN THIS SORT OF THING. They wont understand and there is no textbook version of disability rooted PTSD. discrimination is an awful fight that never ever ends. Its life long. -I do not know what to do I never thought about anything else but being in special forces then after failing overcoming the learning disability that I jut panicked and applied to a program so I could get a job without thinking. There are so many other outdoors jobs that are equally fulfilling. It sounds like you need to visit your career center. You know what you enjoy and now you just have to channel it in the right direction for your strengths so you can do what you love. Have you considered... forest ranger, park ranger, or other jobs with similar special forces tasks? ......APPLY FOR INTERNSHIPS TO EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS WITH HANDS-ON LEARNING. Then maybe return to your program refreshed (or find a program or job you're more suited for) and renewed with a more tactile kinisthetic job where you are more engaged with hands-on learning. -I don't know what to do I have no long term goals I hate my classes and program but I don't know where I can get a long term job I am completely lost because all I thought about was the learning disability. This is an additional reason to see your career center and if your university has a internship office explore those with the career office also. If you hate your program that much DEFINITELY TAKE INCOMPLETES. The academic fight is also draining BE WARNED!!! If you have several F's or D's You can also look into "Academic renewal" Each student is ONLY ALLOWED ONE academic renewal per school they attend. It erases ALL consecutively received D's & F's so that it is as if you never took those classes and REPAIRS YOUR GPA. IT IS BEYOND ME WHY NO SCHOOL OFFICIAL TELLS ANYONE THIS INFORMATION. EVEN OFFICES OF DISABILITY SERVICES INSUFFICIENTLY SERVICE STUDENTS WHEN THEY FAIL TO INFORM STUDENTS OF THIS INFORMATION. Please let me know if you need to talk. Ive been through the academic bureaucratic ringer and I can guide you through it to repair as much of your record and help you down the best path for you. Highest Regards for all you've accomplished, InnovativeL
  9. ETS doesnt disclose your ADD in any way. you well be easy to document and get a decision back from ets
  10. I've been told by many Graduate admissions looks more highly at those who waive their "right" to view. That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to view the letter of rec. I had a professor ask me to draft one so he knoew what details I considered important to be mentioned. Some was removed, but most remained and was changed to his own words. Waiving is best it shows the confidence you have in your recommender to give a good LOR
  11. I have spoken extensively with many at ETS and when I got an idiot on the phone who was only capable of aswering questions for people who possess a nicely labeled category od disability, I instead requested someone esle but *always* acknowledging there efforts so that they would be willing to have someone else help me. They have some very rude customer service at times. Just call back and get someone else on the phone, repeat the process and with each conversation glean a few more helpful details about what your situations requires. I found out A brain trauma is considered a "physical disability" even though the symptoms are that of a learning disability. The type of documentation that they require you to provide is based on the "origin" of your disability. This is how you know "which" ETS documentation requirements you personally need to pay attention to. If you have IEP info and especially if you have previously "approved" documentation like when you have taken SAT's I spoke with ETS about this, I have IEP's also In this case YOU ONLY NEED ONE THING Go to a regular physician to get a referral for a "Nueropsychologist" Find one who does the high priced testing which you will not need (with old documentation) ETS says AS LONG AS YOU PROVIDE THE OLD DOCUMENTATION ALL YOU NEED is an official letter from a "qualified neuropsychologist" who can interpret previous records and previous testing that is necessary for this "qualified professional" (as ETS calls them) to write you a confirmation letter that reaffirms the fact that your disability is permenant, current and ongoing. Old documentation shows what your condition was. ETS just needs to confirm that your old documentation is representative of your CURRENT state of your disability. If you have SAT approval from ETS YOURE SET all you need is that letter to document that the old documentation is also current and make sure the letter states what accommodations youre requesting so that a "qualified professional" has documented the necessity of that accommodation. I'm also looking into Kaplan test prep they have grant funding to assist with this process specificall for those who are in situations that make it difficault to afford and/or complete any of ETS's exams. GOOD LUCK
  12. I found you and this site in my google searching quest for GRE resources We could help each other with the process if you want.

    I wish you the best

  13. I cannot begin to tell you how much discrimination I have endured at those schools, and they dont even have a judicial process setup to properly address the discrimination and hold those ignorant intellectuals accountable. Consider urself lucky you arent stuck there for now.I'm trying to get the hell out but ETS.org Needs Docs from me that cost 2much 2provide. Stayin outa CA is your best b...

  14. Contact Kaplan who administers GRE practice tests for free. This will give you a sense of whats on the GRE and what you need to know.

its mostly pre-college level math and some data interpretation. Do you know the formula to find the area of a circle, triangle etc.?

Let me assure you, Davis and Berkley, sister schools are NOT the place for people with a learning disability.

  15. I'm in the same boat as you. Its looking like $5000 out of pocket JUST to provide that damn ETS board with every last document that demanding board requests. Its a shame people have to live their lives around labels. I have a few neurological quirks to which result in a processing deficit which has no real verifiable name. Try telling that to that DAMN ETS they don't care. There should be funding for people in our shoes JUST BECAUSE WE DON'T POSSESS A PRETTY LABEL for their own personal cognitive processes of categorical thinking. That 5K that no grant or scholarship will even consider covering doesnt even include the standard costs that every other "NORMAL" person has to pay. When agencies make ADA regulatory processes SO UNREASONABLY EXPENSIVE One can only wonder if this is just another way of preventing intelligent people who have disabilities from entering higher education because of the ignorance of committee members who set forth these excessively high priced demands.
