I was teaching community college English and realized how much happened outside the classroom that I was very unaware of...I returned to get another master's in Student Affairs/Higher Education and absolutely love Higher Education/Research, so am now pursuing my Ph.D. I spent many years working in the private sector before teaching and I wouldn't go back to non-education work for anything. I am interested in Higher Education specifically (versus K-12), and in particular, community college students.
I spoke with the DGS on Thursday, February 5 and was "informally admitted." I received a letter in the mail Tuesday, February 17th. It seemed like it took forever, but really just under two weeks. I also received an email from another school today congratulating me on my acceptance, and the email said I would receive a formal letter in "a few weeks." I think it definitely depends on which school/program -- hope that helps OP.
For what its worth -- I received an email from U Michigan today indicating that my application is complete and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for review. The reason I am posting is that they also said, "You may have tried accessing this information on-line using Wolverine Access. We are not updating the Web Application Status this academic year." I don't know if this is for just Higher Ed or for other programs as well, but thought others would like to know (in case you are checking daily as I was).
t_ruth: I have not yet been accepted. I was planning to wait until after I heard, but I scheduled this during the application process and am just getting around to getting down here. The other schools I will only visit if I am actually accepted. I did drive through another college town on the way down here though and decided on the spot - that is not the town for me to spend the next several years (so even just a quick look around helped a lot). Congratulations on your acceptance and hopefully they will inform you soon about whether or not they are going to schedule anything. **For my last two programs (master's programs), they only had visitation days after accepting and committing to attend (not sure if that helps or if it is different for PhD).
I have scheduled on visit at my own expense (Higher Education) and am spending Monday visiting with faculty, sitting in on a class, and having lunch with several current students. This is all on my own dime, but in my opinion is well worth the expense. As far as I know, very few schools offer paid visits in Ed programs.
I wish I knew - I think the Ed people want us to suffer. It really is hard to see all of these other programs posting results while we just sit and wait. I thought I was the only person stressing about decisions -- until I found this board of course.
