  1. @GRADSPN1thank you!! I’m still waiting on my offer letter from Maryland to see what they will offer but at the moment I have absolutely no clue - if we’re being honest, I didn’t expect to get accepted into more than 1 program with how tough admissions were going to be this year. The offers I got from Northwestern and Michigan were pretty much equal (similar teaching load, similar salary when adjusted for cost of living, etc.). It seems to me that the Spanish programs are also about equally good (someone please correct me if I’m wrong). They are both having accepted students events in early March (NU in person and UM virtually) so I’m hoping that once I attend those (and have a chat with my old advisor from my masters institution) I’ll have a better idea of which of the 3 schools would be the best fit. If anyone here has any opinions/insights/advice though, I’m all ears.
  2. Just received an email from UNC, Chapel Hill informing me that I have been waitlisted - it's crazy because I really thought there was a strong overlap between my interests and the professors' and the school is pretty much on the same level as my undergraduate and masters institutions (all relatively well-know, pretty highly ranked, state flagship schools) but I guess they just had a lot of strong candidates this year - like some others here who have been accepted. Life goes on I suppose. Ánimo chic@s and congrats to those accepted. So far 3a/2w/0r for me.
  3. @caromella Sorry to hear about UMichigan, but best of luck with the other programs you are still waiting to hear back from! I saw in your last post that you said you feel a little worried about jumping straight into teaching at UNC. I just wanted to say that in my Masters program we were also thrown straight into teaching (after like 3 days of training over the summer) and although it was very stressful at first, in retrospect it was such a great experience. You get the hang of it pretty quickly and at least at my old institution the more experienced TAs were always happy to help out with advice or even sharing their lesson plans and PowerPoints. If you are worried about the low stipend, it might also be worth asking what sort of opportunities exist to teach during the winter and summer. At my Master's institution, we also had a relatively low stipend (like many large state flagship schools) but by teaching every winter and summer during my two years there, I was able to nearly double my salary each year and live relatively comfortably (at least for a grad student). Just be sure to ask who (if anyone) gets priority in teaching summer and winter courses because I know some institutions (like my own) gave preference first to Masters students and then to PhD students who had never taught a summer/winter course before, then lecturers and so on, so it was not a guarantee that you would get an appointment each winter/summer. Just some things to consider.
  4. Hi everyone, Some more updates on my end: I got a call from the DGS at the University of Maryland, College Park this weekend telling me I had been admitted into their PhD program (offer letter coming this week). I also just received an email from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with an offer letter to their PhD program without an interview or any contact with potential POIs - in case anyone else applied and was waiting for an interview (it looks like they don't do them).
  5. @GRADSPN1 I just got the call earlier today, it was toward the end of the workday, so it very well might be the case that they haven't gotten around to calling everyone - I wouldn't lose hope just yet. @caromella I am definitely beyond thrilled! 1a/1w/6p is a great position to be in and it's still January. I'm sure some of those other 6 schools will also turn into acceptances. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and everyone else on this forum!!
  6. Hi everyone, I just wanted to give you guys an update that I received a call from the DGS at Northwestern today informing me that I had been accepted into their PhD program and that I will be receiving my official offer letter next week! It is my first acceptance and I am over the moon since the program is one of my top choices and I left the interview earlier this week with a really good impression of the program and my POI. Thank you @GRADSPN1 for the interview tips - they were definitely helpful! I also had a great interview with Tulane earlier this week, everyone was incredibly kind and informative - also seems like an amazing program. I will keep you updated when I know more. Also if I could offer a piece of unsolicited advice, remember to send out personalized thank you emails after every interview. In addition to the obvious courtesy of thanking the faculty for taking the time out of their busy schedules to speak with you, it also gives you a final chance to make an impression on the admissions committee before they make their decisions. From my experience, the responses to your thank you emails (or lack thereof) can sometimes be a good indicator of how the interview went and whether or not the program would be a good fit for you. If anyone has any advice or thoughts about Northwestern, I would love to hear them. Buena suerte a todos as we continue with this STRESSFUL process!
  7. @caromella Congrats on the UNC acceptance!! I also applied, but haven't heard back. Do you mind my asking if you interviewed with them or if they made decisions solely based on the application? @GRADSPN1 I have no clue about Princeton, but I also had my interview with Northwestern and they said that they were working as fast as possible to make decisions and hoped that they would be able to start sending out acceptances in early February.
  8. Hi @SPANGRAD22 congrats on the interviews - that’s a huge deal!! From my personal experience it’s normal to have either the Department Chair and/or the Director of Graduate Studies at the interviews. Some of my interviews have been with them and my POI and others have just been department administrators (DGS, DUS, Chair, TA Supervisor, etc.). I asked my past professors the same question when I had my first interview and they told me that it was normal for those people to be there since most universities try to have at least 1-2 of the same people that are present at each interview - it just depends on who is on the Admissions Committee this year. With regard to your question about English, I don’t think that they would penalize you too much for that (it would be worse if your Spanish was not up to par since we are all applying to Spanish programs). I’m not sure how things work at the Ivy Leagues since that’s kind of a world of its own, but at my previous institution they even accepted at least 1 student whose TOEFL score was below the minimum requirement with the understanding that they would have to retake it and get a higher score after living/studying in the US for a few months. Best of luck!!
  9. @GRADSPN1 Wow you are crushing it, interviews at Northwestern, Princeton and Tulane - CONGRATS!!! Let us know if you have any tips for interviews because it definitely seems like you are doing something right.
  10. Thank you and congrats to you too! WashU has a phenomenal Spanish program so I’m not holding my breath. I feel like most of the people who got in will accept their offers, but it’s nice to not be flat out rejected. Like most people here, I’m also interested in contemporary Latin American Lit.
  11. Thank you! My UChicago interview was last week, Northwestern is this upcoming Tuesday morning, and since my last post I just received an email from UC Berkeley inviting me to a 15 min interview on next Wednesday.
  12. Hi everyone, Long time reader, first time poster here. I've been reading everyone's updates to see if anyone has heard from any of the schools that I applied to - so far it seems like no one has gotten any firm answers from any schools. In case anyone else is doing the same, I thought I would share the updates that I have received so far. I had a brief Zoom interview with UChicago last week - I believe they said that they hope to start making decisions in about 2 weeks or so. I received an email from the DGS at Washington University in St. Louis informing me that I was put on the waitlist and that she will let me know if anyone declines their offer and they are in a position to move to the waitlist. I also have an upcoming interview scheduled with Northwestern. I haven't heard from anywhere else, but will let you guys know when I do. Keep the updates coming y buena suerte a todos!
