  1. Yes, I was notified directly by my POI, who I had been in contact with for quite some time. I haven't heard anything from the Department Chair, the secretary, etc. although perhaps they're also sending some sort of official letter. Smoking/drinking with your friends is probably the best way to handle this stress! I'll be rooting that your #7 becomes #6 very soon.
  2. I'm referring to this season (2011)-- my first applying, and probably not my last! I got the bad news over the weekend. So much of this process is luck and departmental politics. But as I mentioned, my potential advisor was extremely indignant on my behalf. He encouraged me to cool my heels for a year (I'm currently on a Fulbright grant where I will pursue future dissertation research, hoping to stay an extra year and work for an NGO) and apply to work with him again next year. I'm definately surprised and have wallowed in my fair share of ice cream this weekend, but I know things will go my way eventually.
  3. Hi persiondoc, Whatever it is-- it's a good thing. But it certainly sounds like an interview to me! Was this sent by a potential advisor at Columbia? I got a similar message from one potential advisor, after I had already interviewed multiple times with the school. It ended up being a really informal Skype chat. The professor basically just wanted an update on my current work, and seemed to be double checking that I was really into the program. It was obvious he was going to enter the faculty meeting pulling for my admission (unfortunately he sent me an apologetic update a day later saying it didn't go his- or my- way). Best of luck, and rest easy. anthroapp
  4. Agreed. You're lucky you've got some other offers though santhf! I'm sure it will work out for the best. Quiqui-- Thanks for the details. I really appreciate it, especially because I'm currently living in an area that has precarious (at best) postal service, so my rejection letter will probably come later than most. I'm most anxious about Stanford because their rejection makes me 0 for 6... I'm assuming these "unofficial" rejections are what they seem to be and moving forward with some backup plans!
  5. Agreed. Stanford remains the most ambiguous of all my schools. I'm not confident about my chances, since I think my argument about "fit" was a bit of a stretch, but I'd like some definite word from them! Congratulations on UCLA! What a great program.
  6. Thanks for the info-- let me know if you hear anything back from them. CONGRATS on Purdue, that's fantastic!!
  7. Has anyone contacted Stanford about where things officially stand with acceptances/rejections?
  8. I have not. At this point, I've received a few official rejections and a few unofficial. I have a bad feeling about this, so I'm beginning to consider my other options :/
  9. Exactly... I'm in a fairly remote location in South America. What. The. Hell.
  10. Has anyone contacted Michigan yet about the "your decision is available" status on the website? What does that meeeeeean
  11. To lighten things up a little: http://www.theonion....o-one-la,19191/
  12. Yes, helpful! Man, I really wish they'd send rejections as quickly as they're sending acceptances this year.
  13. Hey, I did interview with Emory cultural anth and was rejected by e-mail shortly after. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you haven't heard any news from them, it's definitely a rejection On the bright side, at least Mubarak is gone.
  14. Dude, I'm so jealous! Congrats! Was the e-mail from your POI or the dept. secretary?
  15. Thanks-- good to know I'll receive good news soon, or presume it isn't coming!
  16. I know, isn't it strange how hard it is to focus on other things with all this uncertainty lurking around? Personally, I've received 1 official rejection, 1 unofficial rejection, and have 4 applications waiting out in limbo. It's hard to know whether to put Plan B into action (ok let's be honest.. haven't actually created a Plan B yet). Any news on Michigan Ann Arbor, WashU or UNC Chapel Hill greatly appreciated!
  17. That article is dated 1999... I was 11. I'd be interested to hear how things are developing in the Berkeley anthro department more recently.

  19. beach ball
  20. Someone in the results section posted that about 10 people get interviews at WashU (per subdiscipline i would assume). The website says that each subdiscipline brings in about 3-4 students per cohort (http://anthropology.artsci.wustl.edu/graduate/admissions). During my interview with WashU, I didn't get the impression that an interview guaranteed/implied admission at all. They seemed to be "admissions-oriented" questions about my project, qualifications, and fit with the department.
  21. Yes-- I am an Emory finalist and am 98% certain that all finalists have been contacted/interviewed at this point. But don't lose heart! We all face a few disappointments, especially in this soul-crushing process. Do you have any more applications out? As far as worthy pursuits, I would recommend spending as much time gaining research experience, and if possible, living/working in your potential field site.
  22. Anyone having trouble accessing the FAFSA to submit it this evening? The website is down. Crap. Any thoughts?
  23. Same boat- haven't heard anything from Emory. Crossing my fingers I get an interview.
