  1. Hey I'm going for the OR Phd. Anyone figured out housing yet?
  2. Yep, I guess we are all in the same kind of boat. I have already declined from those programs where I am certain I will not attend. But I am waiting it out before accepting at one and shuting the door on another one pending funding issues. To all who are on a waitlist I promise I will choose as soon as I have confirmation on funding from these two programs.
  3. I doubt it. But you can write Anayancy Paz in the IEOR department for your specific case. Best of luck.
  4. @RoboTicks: About Berkeley funding, I understand that department funding decisions have been made and people awarded funding have been notified. (apparently we were not included). University Fellowships are notified by April 1st. On another topic: Has anyone heard back from Penn State IE? particularly PhD applicants?
  5. WOW, congratulations, that is an achievement in itself. But the truth is the big thing you shold focus on is what do you want to do research on? Have you thought about possible advisors? This will be your focus for the next 4-5 years. Go wherever they have profesors whose research you are particularly interested in. And if you can where they have several professors working on that kind of research.
  6. I have heard this a couple of times, and I don't really know. I think it is mostly my University is probably not known at all by Columbia profs and maybe someone at Cal has had 1 or 2 students from there. It is really quite a good program (comparing with people I know from several US programs), but I know that South America is on nobody's map when it comes to higher education.
  7. Probably MIT, I really like their professors for research. However it will be nice to go somewhere that has a proper industrial engineering department, not just the OR center.
  8. Sure, here we go: GRE: 800Q / 650V / 5.0AW Undergrad and MS in IE in the top school in my country (but not known at all outside it). GPA (as converted by WES). Undergrad: 3.8/4.0 Grad: 4.0/4.0 Research: 2 publications in proceedings, 1 submitted journal, several talks. Three years working on OR team in Fortune 100 company. Here we have done interesting research, but publications are hard due to legal issues, I pointed that out in my SoP. LoRs from PhDs from GaTech, NCSU and Penn State. Good luck to all
  9. Whoever posted it misspelled the name of the school, thats why it's hard to find. And yet he or she got in.... very strange: Massachusett Institute Of TechnologyOperations Research, PhD (F11)Accepted via E-mail on 22 Feb 2011I22 Feb 2011Massachusett Institute Of Technology Operations Research, PhD (F11) Accepted via E-mail on 22 Feb 2011 I 22 Feb 2011
  10. Same here, no news on funding. wondering if and when they notify funding decisions.
  11. Last year they sent them out thursday the second week of February. That would be today. But who knows if they kept the same schedulle.
  12. To get in, I'd guess not at all. But since I'm going to the US I'd like to visit some university where I get an admit (hoping I get at least one) to get a feel of the town, the campus etc. before moving there for 5 years, which I think could be abig help in preparing for that.
  13. OMG someone posted an admit in the results page for Columbia's IEOR PHD program yesterday. Dear friend, if you happen by, please leave your whole story here, and tell us how you were contacted so early and your stats if you can.
  14. I just turned 29 this week. If I don't get in this year I think it will be a bit of a mental burden knowing I'm starting after 30. So I really hope I get in. I don't know why, but 30 has always seemed (at least to me) like this threshold for many things, like my deadline to quit smoking, for starting a PhD, the minimum age for getting married, among other things. It used to seem fo far off, now here it's here, less than a year away and I'm scared. What if I don't get in, what if I can't quit smoking, what if.... ugh it's driving me nuts.
  15. WOW, I remember when I first checked out this thread it was justa casual remarks about being cranky, now it looks like we're wayyyy past a lot of people's boiling points. It really shows that we are all getting more anxious everyday. Well, let's just hope all this anguish turns out to be worthwhile. Good luck to us all.
  16. Yeah!!!! that's the spirit!! No use thinking about how bad it will be. We should all go over to the "How will you celebrate" thread instead.
  17. Absolutely agree, specially with number 1, I'd invite every idiot that has ever doubted I could do this just to rub it in their faces in front of the people who actually supported me. 5 and 6 seem a bit over the top, but knowing my usual reaction to good news I believe they are inevitable. Additionally, I live in the same town as my parents I believe i wouldn´t drive or ride to their house but literally run there to share the news.
  18. Yep, that sound about right. Also if I get all rejections I'll take the money I have saved for graduate school and spend every last dime: travle shopping, whatever.
  19. hey, me too. I can even come off as a bit of a jerk without actually doing anything. Most of the friends I've made as an adult have later told me something like "hey, the first time I met you I thought you were a little weird and a bit of a jerk,..." funny part is these people are now my closest friends. I hope I didn't make the same kind of first impression with adcoms
  20. Ditto from Georgia Tech. I don't know if I really appreciate those emails much. They made me jump in my chair, almost swallow my toungue, for nothing.
  21. I'm planning an unrelated trip to the US in late March, thought I'd try to squeeze in a couple of University visits, but mid-February, no way to make it.
  22. Thanks for the advice. I was actually thinking about quiting after I satrted. You know, new city, new life and cigarette-free. But what you're saying actually makes a lot of sense I'm really going to mull it over. Thanks a lot.
