Hi, I’m wondering if anyone who received a Brandeis offer does not plan on accepting it? I am the waitlist from the results page (also auto-fill on my phone typed admittance rather than admissions so please ignore that mistake lol). If you could let me know whenever you get the chance I really would appreciate it! Thanks so much!!

I was given an offer off of the waitlist myself but just turned it down, after receiving an offer from my top choice this morning! Best of luck to you!

I (and one or two others it seems) emailed the program and received our rejections that way. You may want to do the same?

Hey! Do you remember how long it took for you to hear back from UPenn when you emailed the program for an update? I'm curious as I still haven't gotten a response, and I emailed them nearly 2 weeks ago. I'm in agony waiting ugh this dragging of feet is driving me insane!

  3. I applied to PhD programs this year for my second cycle in a row, but I’m about to be 31 and am currently after a job in academia which I know is insanely competitive. I’ve wanted to work as a professor in my field literally since I was 15, but I’m facing 2 rejections and 2 waitlists so far, so I’m not feeling very confident I’m going to be accepted anywhere (applied to primarily joint sociology/public policy degrees, and one education program).

I’ve worked as a researcher for the past 10 years (6 years at my current job) and am trying to think of jobs to think about applying to while I wait to get the rest of my application decisions. I’ll be wrapping up my Master’s in Public Policy this spring and then really wanna get out of my current position which I have very much outgrown - have been underpaid and overqualified in this role for a couple of years now. If this cycle goes poorly and I don't get accepted to any PhD programs, I may just give up at this point. I feel sad thinking about that, but I simply don't know if I can afford (mentally or financially) to keep trying to get a doctoral degree in the face of so much failure. That being said, I'd like to consider applying to jobs I'll not only be qualified for with my MPP, but could be in for the long-term/have chances for moving up the ladder at.

For others who have MPP degrees and work in research, what do you do and how much do you make? I’m in the education field if that helps, and I very much love studying education policy, but am open to other areas. Educational inequities are a big interest of mine.

    Thanks in advance!

That's a hard pill to swallow - I'm sorry to hear that. I keep seeing these posts about overqualified applicants keep little to zero offers this cycle. One thing to keep in mind when applying to your own school are the politics of the admissions committee. Maybe they don't have the best relationship with your recommenders? Maybe they have a personal agenda to advance policy field research that isn't connected to yours? Applying to your own school can be a massive advantage, but it can easily backfire. So please don't see the waitlist as a reflection of your research abilities or contributions to the school - I have a feeling there are other forces at play.

Thank you, I appreciate it. You summed it up well, I can imagine there are political pieces behind this that likely played a part, that had nothing to do with me or my qualifications I'm just kind of floored that the many years I've spent here busting my ass amounted to a waitlist spot, after so many high ranking professors/faculty claiming "we can't wait until you're a doctoral student here studying xyz with xyz."

This is also my second waitlist, in addition to 2 rejections, so I think that's part of why this is hitting so hard.

  5. Anybody get good news from Brandeis's social policy PhD? Managed to somehow get waitlisted (email to check portal came through just now), though I've worked as a researcher (here, at Brandeis/Heller) for close to six years, published multiple times through said job, and am wrapping up my MPP here this semester. Literally had the dean of the school jumping up and down excited for me to join the program and all three of my rec letters were from professors I've worked with very closely here.

I know it's all about the applicant pool and a little bit of luck, but damn. This one feels like a slap in the face.

  6. Anyone else apply to the joint public policy and sociology program? I think I technically applied to PP and then selected the soc subtrack, so I'm not sure if the review process will be different for me.

  7. I've been waitlisted (received notice this past Friday) and the program is my top choice. However, I imagine this is the case for the vast majority of folks who applied/have been given offers at this stage of the process. Has anyone here ever actually turned down at offer from Harvard? I'm trying to gauge my chances of getting off this thing, and do know from their email last week that they don't rank the list. I guess I just can't imagine anyone saying no to a fully funded PhD offer from one of the best programs/universities out there, likely based on the prestige, which bums me out - I'm invested in going primarily based off of research fit with my POI and would be gutted to lose out on the chance to work with her.

Would love to hear from folks who have applied to this particular program (the Ed school's PhD), but also Harvard doctoral programs in general. Please give me some hope that my dream isn't dead!

Thank you for your response, and congrats! Have you or anyone else received a letter today as mentioned? I am starting to lose hope, but I just think it’s odd that none of the CIS folks in this thread have heard back. More than anything, I hope I receive a decision (good or not) for my own peace of mind haha.

I received a personalized email from the adcom just now, offering me a spot on the waitlist. It was kinder than I expected, and then I got another email alerting me to the portal update, which led me to a page where I had to either accept or deny the offer - which I of course accepted. From what the personal email said, it seems they do see at least a little movement off the waitlist each year, so we'll see what happens.

I hope there's good news coming to other CIS folks, and that at least some of us get some actual offers today!

  9. Don't know if asking this question will help or increase my anxiety, but I've seen some acceptances for UPenn this week. Anyone know what their pattern is like, with distributing decisions? If it's a rolling thing or all in one day? I've been rejected by Brown, still haven't heard from HGSE after interviewing, and these three are all my top choices so I'm counting down the days until they're all officially dead dreams :( I know there's no such thing as a safety school and you can't really predict what's going to happen, but I don't know how much hope I have for the remaining programs I'm waiting to hear from later this month if none of these work out.

Edit: I applied and interviewed for the Harvard PhD in education, which is interdisciplinary with sociology. Forgot that doesn't really fall into this subthread!

Same here! I saw that someone else updated the results page today with an acceptance email/call, but they’re in the EPPE concentration. I wonder if they received the call yesterday or today…either way, I’m trying to keep some hope alive for us all!

I just saw that too! And yes, definitely going to hold onto this hope to keep myself from going too crazy waiting haha

I know this is a long shot, especially because HGSE keeps their stats under wraps pretty well, but would anyone happen to know how many folks they typically interview each year? I'm curious if anyone was bold enough to ask anyone they spoke with along their application/interview journey!

Congrats to everyone accepted!! I’m curious to know if any CIS applicants  received a call?

Hmmm...I also interviewed for CIS and haven't heard back yet. Is it possible that they haven't yet fleshed out our concentration? From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like at least anyone here has been contacted as of today! Seems strange that not a single person wouldn't have gotten a bite at this point, and I know the program has historically called all admits on the same day, but perhaps this year something's up on their end? That's what I'm gonna tell myself at least, to maintain some hope!
