  1. @Coffee Snob one of my reviewers listed off six sub-fields/thematic areas and told me to include them all in the literature review, which would have changed my project entirely almost towards archaeology (Im socio-cultural). I literally laughed when I read their comments. So irrelevant.
  2. Just got the email, didn't get it. Score of 2.67 Lost points, according to one reviewer, because I had another grant supporting the first 6 months of this two-year research project. I guess there's no point in re-applying, since I'm automatically cut because of my other funding.
  3. I suppose they could wait until Friday, since that is technically 2 weeks before the May 1st deadline. Literally every time I get an email my heart jumps ?
  4. I heard back at 8am NY time with the final rejection last year, but the notice that I had made it to the second round was sent this year at 9pm NY time. @cynical-outcome Just to clarify, you know of people who have already received a final decision in this round? Was it an award or a rejection? (I can see the logic of sending out rejections earlier to give people more time to revise and resubmit, but I don't understand why they would knowingly hold off on rejected applications until the last minute).
  5. Last year I got my rejection from WG on Monday April 12th, so I imagine we'll probably hear back today. We also heard earlier this year that we moved to the second round, so I'm already surprised it's this late.
  6. Hi all, I know there are a lot of other conversations that have been held here over the years on taxes, but since I've read them all and couldn't find any useful answers (and many of them are outdated), I thought I would start a new thread. Is there any way for PhD students to deduct research expenses from their taxes? The 'qualified education' expenses that we can deduct are extremely narrow, and include only tuition and books and some fees (Publication 970). However, there is a line that says that anything that is 'required for enrollment' is also tax deductible. Now, it's hard to imagine doing a PhD without doing research, so in my mind, research costs (at least software, supplies, some traveling expenses) are tax deductible. I would not be able to enroll if I wasn't carrying out research. Moreover, such expenses are required of all students in my degree track. Publication 970 states the following: [Qualified education expenses] For purposes of tax-free scholarships and fellowship grants, these are expenses for: • Tuition and fees required to enroll at or attend an eligible educational institution; and • Course-related expenses, such as fees, books, supplies, and equipment that are required for the courses at the eligible educational institution. These items must be required of all students in your course of instruction. Has anyone encountered any useful info on this topic?
