Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone might have some insight into the experiences between McGill and Western. I got off the waitlist for McGill (and accepted) but have recently been offered a spot off of the Western waitlist. Now I'm trying to decide between the two (and I have less than a day to respond!). I don't speak French so that makes me nervous about McGill (but maybe it shouldn't?) Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice or insight, thank you!

    Hi! Congratulations on your acceptances!!

i know several people in the SLP program at McGill. Ive heard its extremely theory based. Also If you do not speak french, it may be difficult to find a placement.

i didnt get accepted into Western but ive heard great things, specifically the clinical placements. I also heard that western is less focused on the theory and more focused on hands on experience (which is amazing!)

Goodluck with your decision, I know its not easy

It can be due to a lot of reasons. One of my friends believes that he got rejected for a master's program (not SLP) because of the reference letters. He kept a copy of them because he ended up not applying to one of the schools. Sadly one of the referees whom he took a class from and got an A+ literally expressed her confusion as to why my friend would look for a reference letter from her. She didn't say any good stuff about my friend. This can be part of the reason.

It can also be about what every school values the most. For example, UofT and UBC value research experiences more, UofA values EDI experiences and overall profile more, etc.

From what you said, I think your profile is pretty competitive, so I have no idea what has gone wrong.

BUT, from someone in another thread, being rejected doesn't mean you're not good enough or SLP isn't for you. Sometimes you're just unlucky, with a lot of highly competitive applicants applying in the same cycle.

My reference letters were strong… thats the thing.

  3. Congratulations to everyone who received acceptances, you should be so proud of yourselves, i know it has not been easy!

i was rejected from western, ottowa and toronto and have yet to hear from mcgill.

im really shocked by this, its my 3rd time applying, i have worked as an SLPA for the past 2 years at a school for neurodiverse children and at a private clinic, not to mention other great experiences like working in a hospital and volunteering. I received great reference letters, got 4th quartile in casper, wrote an amazing letter of intent, 3.65 gpa in a biology undergrad at concordia, i had also written a letter of extenuating circumstances to explain a drop in my gpa during one semester. I also received all A’s in my prerequisits for the program.

i honestly dont know what else to do and why i am not being accepted. If anyone can provide some insight i would really appreciate it.

I called McGill because I wanted to get a clearer timeline on when we can expect to hear back, and I was told that they are still reviewing some applications but are aiming to let applicants know by midweek this week. So Wednesday or Thursday. Hoping everyone feels a sense of peace and calm these next few days and weeks, the waiting is so tough!

I just called McGill and they said they are waiting for first week of April to give out responses.

  5. Hello! Another update for you guys! I spoke with McGill(again) and there is a new chair of admission this year therefore it is undecided whether the successful candidates will be called or emailed (however in the past it has been phone calls). She also mentioned that there were MANY applicants this year with amazing applications and it is difficult to eliminate/choose. She has not received a list as of yet, so it should be starting next week.

Hey! I got 3rd quartile last year and 4th this year. I wasn't accepted last year but I think it was definitely because of my C-GPA, not the casper. 3rd quartile is still good its better than 50-75% of applicants! It's a huge range so it's stressful not knowing what exact score is being sent to the school. But I have seen on reddit people who got into UdeM in the 3rd quartile!

I got 4th last year and 3rd this year! what is your sgpa if you dont mind me asking, mines a 3.53

    Hi everyone!

    Congrats on all the offers!

I’m just wondering if anybody receiving offers or currently in SLP has been accepted from an undergrad in BioMed or something along those lines. I’ve done ABA for over a year and have lots of experience in other roles working with kids with special needs, but am wondering if my degree may be a downfall.

    Thanks everyone!

I did an Undergrad in Biology so were in the same boat. I also have years of experience with children with special needs. I thought that having a biology degree might make me stand out from the rest of those applying from linguistics or psychology, but i did not get accepted (yet).

^^ SAME. I've also heard that in the past not all people who were accepted received a phone call, some found out by email only. Take this w/ a grain of salt though, bc I'm not too sure!

was in Biology and because of covid my gpa dropped to a 3.65 at Concordia. I was a nanny to 3 children, volunteered at children hospital in oncology department, and i work as a unit coordinator at the hospital. I am also a substitute teacher at a daycare, and have experience as a lifeguard with children with disabilities, as well as camps and tutor. I did volunteer at speech center as well. I got 4th quartile in casper and have gotten A's in the prerequisites. I have 2 AMAZING recommendation letters.

I do not have research experience, but because i was in biology I hoped that McGill would reconsider that as a plus because we did alot of labs and research in that program.

Im still waiting to hear i keep checking my emails, but nothing. I felt like I had a different CV and experiences so maybe they would consider, but now im not so sure.
