I am happy to hear I am not alone, however a little scared to hear that I am most likely going to be doing the same thing when I apply to PhD programs in two years lmao

A few years back, I was considering a PhD at an American university. But it was never clear whether a Masters was necessary for admission. Never quite understood this.
My understanding is that a USA PhD has coursework embedded, compulsory essays and language requirements, exams and a dissertation prospectus. Just sounds like students go through a second masters before progressing to writing their research. Not necessarily criticising, it's just odd to me.
Best of luck everyone with the admissions!

Congratulations! One of my friends is in STEM and he has been invited to similar events in February by two schools so far (everything covered by the school). It's essentially an interview process framed as campus visit/tour. For hiring faculty, I believe most schools would typically do this kind of campus interview for the finalists before giving offer.

Got an email from Northeastern saying that I'm considered a "top candidate" (made shortlist) for acceptance in the the PhD program. They want me to come to their "per-admissions event" in a few weeks. They are reimbursing my flight from and to Boston and paying for a hotel room for my stay. The itinerary says I will get a chance to meet faculty, other PhD students, and tour the campus. The whole things seems a little odd, especially that their paying for my room and flight given I haven't officially been accepted. Does anyone else have any experience with this at NU or in general?

I hope so! UIUC has started sending acceptances. No idea when Purdue or IU meet... anyone have any idea on that? Is is bad to reach out if I have grad student contacts at the schools to see if they know, or to ask profs? Is it better to wait? I hate waiting. ?
GOOD LUCK TO ALL for good news today!!!!

I am a student at Harvard. Two updates from two profs:
Prof A told me that decisions are NOT yet made.
Prof B told me that some meetings on admissions were held earlier this week. But the department have NOT yet communicated decisions.
Sum up -- the post is very likely to be a troll (unless some prof are really really eager to share info with their prospective students).

Ended up not applying for a Masters in history. Spending this year travelling (Turkey and France) while hopefully getting work experience.

    Best of luck, everyone!

Also my two cents based on my interview w/t Berkeley a few days ago. It was a quite formal one (a combination of general questions like "why Berkeley" and "your research's contribution and intervention" and difficult technical questions like "reading strategies of specific sources"). I would say even if you were told it'd be an informal meeting, you could still prepare as if it were a formal interview because you never know. They could still ask you tough questions in an informal chat. One of the benefits of this approach in my opinion is that once you're done with this interview prep, you're essentially well-prepared for other interviews going forward (just need to prepare a bit re specific why X school questions).

Out of curiosity, what's everyone's research area, and if not listed as your signature, where are you applying? My focus is Modern Europe, specifically Germany, and my research focuses on the legacies and memorialization of German anti-Nazi resistance groups from the 1940s to the present day.

In brief in my signature, but my focus is medieval religious/gender history, and my research is on the sensory experience of pilgrimages/saints' cults and women's emotional reactions to those sensory experiences! I want to focus on the Florence to Rome stretch on the Via Francigena between 1250-1400 AD
Side note, my thesis advisor in undergrad does a lot of post-war German memory work-- Dr. Ruff at St. Louis University. He's a super nice guy with very interesting work!

    Hello, hello!
Decided to throw my hat in the ring for PhD programs this cycle. I'm applying to Notre Dame's History and Medieval Studies PhD programs.
    Some things about me:
BA in History & Italian Studies ('19, cum laude)  MA in Premodern European History ('21, had full tuition scholarship)  Fulbright Semi-Finalist  2 years of secondary teaching experience Italian, Latin, German, French languages 3 publications (1 in undergrad, 1 in my grad school's journal, 1 in a national medieval graduate student journal)  2 research grants awarded 1 conference paper, which won an award
I don't know if anyone else is applying for the history program at ND, but I have heard from a good friend in that program that the department is in need of more medievalists (they had to cancel a medieval history class because they simply didn't have enough people to take it), so that's just a heads up.
